CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Nowadays, students engage themselves with technology in studying for more interactive

experiences that captivate different ages of learners. This chapter presents various relevant

literature about game-based learning to look more into the effects of games towards learners

and have a better comprehension of the study.

Game design

A video game is a collection of experiences of players' participation from a certain

perspective, specifically of the characters controlled (Gee, 2008, p. 21-24). It is designed to

establish certain goals for players, yet often leaves them to achieve the goals in their own way.

With the levels in the game, players could do tons of practice and then apply what have been

adapted or learned. Moreover, the increasing difficulty players face encourages them to strive

as the levels in the game advance and require critical thinking to move forward. Video games

provide experience in the virtual world and apply challenges such as solving problems and

solving mysteries for the player to feel satisfaction and engage more. A study found that digital

games, when well-designed, can have a positive impact on various learning outcomes. These

outcomes included cognitive skills, problem-solving abilities, and academic achievement (Clark

et al., 2016, p. 93-98).

These findings are supported by various studies in the field of game-based learning. A

study conducted a comprehensive review of research on game- based learning in science

education, highlighting its positive effects on engagement, motivation, knowledge retention, and

conceptual understanding (Tobias et al., 2014, p. 485-503). Another research explored the use
of digital games in language learning and teaching, emphasizing how game-based approaches

enhance language acquisition through active engagement and collaborative learning (Reinders,

2012, p. 5-9). Furthermore, a research conducted a meta-analysis on the impact of educational

video games, revealing positive effects on student achievement, engagement, and motivation

(Vogel et al., 2006, p. 229-243)-. Another research reviewed current practices in serious game

research and examined learning outcomes, concluding that serious games have the potential to

enhance learning and skill development (Wouters et al., 2009, p. 258-277). Finally, a research

conducted a qualitative meta-analysis of computer games as learning tools, affirming that

computer games can enhance learning by providing opportunities for active engagement,

problem-solving, and critical thinking (Ke, 2009, p. 1-32).

Engagement of learners

Game-based learning has changed the way students engage in education. A meta-

analysis conducted on the use of game mechanics such as challenges and reward systems, the

captivated the learners, making them pay attention and have motivation to learn. The game's

design is also one of the factors that contribute to active participation in the game, leading to

high retention and better comprehension. By making learning more exciting and entertaining,

learners would have a great interactive adventure discovering something new (Wouters et al.

2013, p.250-261). A study explored the impact of an educational game on student engagement

in a mathematics classroom and found that students exhibited higher levels of motivation,

enjoyment, and perseverance while using the game (Tokac, 2019, p.1-14).

Improves socializing

Our new generation has been significantly influenced by technology. Game-based

learning provides a lot of benefits in enhancing learning and procedures in teaching while

encouraging communication or active interaction between the educators and learners

(Anastasiadis et al., 2018, p. 140). There are instances wherein gamers manage themselves to

be involved in communities of practice to create social identities with distinctive ways of

experiencing, interacting, skill to achieve, and knowledge (Gee, 2008, p. 21-40). Video games

provide a fun way of connecting to other people by playing together or teaming up, which could

help develop social skills. This skill is essential for one's life in maintaining or creating

connections, mostly in work environments or school.

Increases knowledge retention

Students tend to comprehend ideas better when presented digitally. Video games offer

opportunities to experience new identities or roles and have a high potential to engage players

in hypothesizing, probing, and rethinking strategies (Gee, 2003, p. 22-23). Technically, learners

are more likely to remember something when taught through games or in an entertaining way.

Additionally, with the reward system, they can be motivated to master a certain skill throughout

the game. It also encourages collaboration when solving puzzles or problems, allowing them to

work together while developing critical thinking and teamwork. One main advantage of game-

based learning is that learners can apply their knowledge in a simulated environment to

examine different strategies before applying them in real life. Finally, a research conducted a

study with middle school students and found that those who engaged with a simulation-based

educational game showed significant improvements in their ability to analyze complex problems,

think critically, and make informed decisions (Plass et al., 2015, p. 53-69).
