Equation of Quadratic Functions

1. The document discusses finding the equation of a quadratic function given its zeros or given its graph. It provides examples of finding the equation when given two zeros, such as x=4 and x=2, which results in the equation f(x)=x^2-6x+8. 2. It also gives examples of finding the equation when given the vertex and a point on the graph. For the graph with vertex (2,-4) and point (4,0), the equation is determined to be y=x^2-4x. 3. The key steps are locating the vertex or zeros, setting up the vertex form equation, and solving to determine the equation.

Equation of Quadratic Functions

A. Equation of Quadratic Function Given Its Zeros

1. Find the equation of the quadratic function whose zeros are 4 and 2.
Solution: If the zeros are 4 and 2, then
x=4∨x=2
It follows that
x−4=0∨x−2=0 , then
( x−4 ) ( x−2 )=0 ,then
2
x −6 x +8=0
f ( x )=x 2−6 x +8
2. Find the equation of the quadratic function whose zeros are -1 and 4.
Solution: If the zeros are -1 and 4, then
x=−1∨x=4
It follows that
x +1=0∨x−4=0 ,then
( x +1 ) ( x−4 )=0 , then
2
x −3 x−4=0
f ( x )=x 2−3 x−4
B. Equation of Quadratic Function Given Its Graph
When the vertex and any point on the parabola are clearly seen, the equation of
the quadratic function can easily be determined by using the form of quadratic
function y=a(x-h)2+ k.
1) Find the equation of the quadratic function given the graph below.
 Locate the vertex of the parabola and
a point (any point) on it.
Vertex = (2,-4) (h,k)
Point = (4,0) (x,y)
 Using the vertex form, solve for a
h=2 ; k= -4 ; x=4 ; y= 0
y = a(x-h)2 + k
0 = a(4-2)2 + -4
(4,0)
0 = a(2)2 – 4
0 = a(4) – 4
0 = 4a – 4
0 + 4 = 4a – 4+4
4 4a
4 = 4a =
4 4
1 = a or a=1
 Determine the equation by replacing
h k, and a.
y = a(x-h)2 + k y = (x-2)2 - 4
2
y = 1(x-2) -4 Vertex (2,-4)

 Find the general equation by expanding the standard form (vertex form)
y = (x-2)2 – 4 y = x2 - 4x + 4 – 4 y = x2 - 4x
The equation of the quadratic function whose graph appears above is y=x2-4x.
2) What is the quadratic equation of the parabola given its graph below?

 Locate the vertex of the parabola and

a point (any point) on it.
Vertex = (-1,4) (h,k)
Point = (-2,3) (x,y)
 Using the vertex form, solve for a
h=-1 ; k= 4 ; x=-2 ; y= 3
y = a(x-h)2 + k
3 = a(-2+1)2 + 4
3 = a(-1)2 + 4
3 = a(1) + 4
3=a+4
3-4 = a +4-4
-1 = a or a = -1

 Find the equation; replace only h k, and a.

y = a(x-h)2 + k
y = -(x+1)2 + 4
y = -1(x+1)2 + 4

 Find the general equation by expanding the standard form (vertex form)
y = -(x+1)2 + 4 y = -(x2 +2x + 1) + 4 y = -x2 - 2x + 3
2
y = -x - 2x – 1 + 4

The equation of the quadratic function whose graph appears above is y = -x2 -
2x + 3.
