Word Problems 4

The ABC Company manufactures three types of toys - Soldiers, Tarzans, and Dogs. The problem is to minimize total production costs while meeting constraints on the number of each type produced and using a 600-unit warehouse. Weenies and Buns processes hot dogs and buns. The problem is to maximize profit from sales while meeting constraints on flour milling, beef deliveries, and labor hours. A toy manufacturer wishes to maximize profits from cars, buses, and trains subject to constraints on total units produced, train production, and workspace requirements for each product.

The word problem

- Write the mathematical model for the following linear programming

problems:
1. The ABC Company is a well-known toy manufacturer. They have just started a
new operation on programmable toy robots. Three different types are considered,
Soldier, Tarzan, and Dog. The total cost of production must be minimized. A unit of
Soldier, Tarzan and Dog costs $50, $30 and $20 respectively. No more than 100 Dogs
can be produced per week and the total production of Soldier plus Tarzan must not be
less than 400 units. A warehouse with a capacity of 600 units is used to store the
produced toys. The size of the 3 types is exactly the same and hence will occupy the
same space in the warehouse.

2. Weenies and Buns is a food processing plant that manufactures hot dogs and hot
dog buns. They grind their own flour for the hot dog buns at a maximum rate of 200
pounds per week. Each hot dog bun requires 0.1 pound of flour. They currently have a
contract with Beefland, Inc., which specifies that a delivery of 800 pounds of beef
product is delivered every Monday. Each hot dog requires 1/4 pound of beef product.
Finally, the labor force at Weenies and Buns consists of five employees working full
time (40 hours per week each). Each hot dog requires three minutes of labor, and each
hot dog bun requires two minutes of labor. Each hot dog yield a profit of $0.20, and
each bun yields a profit of $0.10.
3. A toy manufacturer produces cars, busses and trains, wishes to determine the
number of units to produce from each product such that his profits are maximized.

The following data are provided:

a. All units produced can be sold. Net profit generated from sale of one of each
of the three products cars, busses and trains are 2, 6 and 3 respectively.
b. Units produced are stored in a warehouse with a capacity of 450 units.
c. Total production of trains must not exceed the total production of cars and
busses combined.
d. Working time needed for producing a unit of each of the 3 products is shown
(in minutes) in the following table:
Production Available
Cars Busses Trains
Stage time
1 15 25 40 480
2 5 10 5 160
3 - 10 20 200

4. In problem (3) above, rewrite the warehouse constrain considering:

Trains are stored in a separate warehouse with a capacity of 100 units. Cars and
Busses are stored in a separate warehouse with a capacity of 300 Cars, where one Bus
requires a storage space twice of that needed for one car.
