The relevance of the EDSA Revolution is that it serves as a reminder that the Filipino people can

tolerate a lot of hardship, will deny stark reality, allow abuses done to others, and side with corrupt
officials as long as they can until someone else with the will to rally them acts for their own best
interest. A lot of people did sincerely march to overthrow the Marcos dictatorship, this cannot be
denied but many wouldn't have attempted it if Cardinal Sin did not rally the people to protect the
supposed mutineers Enrile and Ramos along with their men. Since these people didn't even rally when
their votes were stolen during the February 9 Snap Election and there was no mass outcry when people
like Michael Sumilang or Alexis Parao were killed in cold blood protecting their votes. It’s a sad truth that
the ordinary Filipino would prefer ignorance and indolence than be burdened with the monumental task
of the shared responsibility of nation building.

Justice eluded the Philippines that day, for while the Marcos family fled the institution of
corruption and the seeds of future conflict remained. For without justice there can be no peace. Hence,
the promises and supposed hope for a better future where trampled the next few days. Coup d’états
and mismanagement soon followed while the cronies try to hamper the wheels of progress and impede
swift justice. The Filipino people exposed the lavish lifestyle and crimes of the Marcos family yet being
uneducated as the majority are, they were easily exploited to undo what was good about the revolution
and false narratives and nostalgia for something that isn't real soon took hold.

The dream which was the EDSA Revolution soon started to fade, the people forgetting that a
revolution and fight to change things for the better doesn't happen overnight, they have to change thirty
years of a culture of corruption and impunity. The Filipino people are sadly not up to the task, it is up to
the political elites once again to lead this directionless masses but then these are the same elites that
were better off during those corrupt times of martial law. The elites were smart enough to exploit the
new system and turn the ordinary man against their own interests for ease of comfort. They told them
that our family can rule better than you ever can, trust us. Thus, patronage politics returned and this will
eventually lead to the return of the Marcoses despite the outcry of their victims.

Today, the relevance of the EDSA Revolution is still to hope and to fight for what is decent and
just, yet time and ignorance are the allies of the abusers. Historical revisionists are working around the
clock to tarnish the revolutionaries and they are finding fertile mind among the ignorant masses who are
happy being served the crumbs from the table of their political masters. This situation cannot hold, and
there would come a time when people will realize this once again and overthrow a corrupt regime, what
happens that after that is anyone’s guess. Let the EDSA Revolt then serve as a warning to future tyrants
and abusers that they can fool some Filipinos most of the time but they cannot fool all Filipinos all the
time.
