DEFINITION

Bag Technique - is a tool by which a nurse/midwife, during


her/his home visit can perform nursing procedures with
ease and deftness, to save time and effort, with the end
view of rendering effective nursing care.
Public Health Bag - is an essential and indispensable equipment
of the public health nurse and midwife which she has to
carry along with her when she/he goes out home visiting
PURPOSE

1. To render effective nursing care to clients and/or members of


the family during home visits.
PRINCIPLES OF BAG TECHNIQUE

 The use of the bag technique should minimize if not totally


prevent the spread of infection from individuals to families,
hence, to the community.
 Bag technique should save time and effort on the part of the
nurse in the performance of nursing procedures.
 Bag technique should not overshadow concern for the
patient rather it should show the effectiveness of total care
given to an individual or family.
 Bag technique can be performed in a variety of ways
depending upon agency policies, actual home situation as
long as the principles of avoiding transfer of infection are
carried out.
POINTS TO CONSIDER

 The bag should contain all the necessary articles, supplies


and tools that will be used to answer emergency needs.
 The bag and its contents should be cleaned very often, the
supplies always replenished and ready for use anytime.
 The bag and its contents should be well protected from
contact with any article in the patient’s home.
 Consider the bag and its contents clean and sterile, while
articles that belong to the patients as dirty and
contaminated.
 The arrangement of the contents of the bag should be the
one most convenient to the user, to facilitate efficiency
and avoid confusion.
CONTENTS AND ARRANGEMENT OF THE BAG

 Front of bag, left to right


 Digital thermometer/Tympanic thermometer
 On right near end of the bag
 Test tube and test tube holder
 Medicine dropper
 On left near end of bag
 Medicine glass
 Baby scale
 Bandage scissors
 Back of bag (left & right)
 Alcohol 70%
 Acetic Acid Solution
 Benedict’s solution
 Aromatic spirit of ammonia
 Betadine
 Hydrogen peroxide
 Liquid soap
 Center of bag
 Forceps (straight & curved)
 Roller bandage
 Sterile dressing (OS and cotton balls)
 Alcohol lamp with denatured alcohol

 Syringe and needles in container, 2 and 5 ml.

PROCEDURE

1. Upon arrival at the patient’s/client’s home, place the bag


on the table or any flat surface with paper lining. The clean
side must be out and the folded portion, touching the
table.
2. Place bag left side of the lining and put bag handles or
straps beneath the bag.
3. Ask for a basin of water and a glass of water if faucet is not
available. Place these outside the work area.
4. Open the bag, take out the towel, soap dish and apron.
Place them on one corner of the work area (within the
confines of the plastic lining).
5. Wash hands using soap and water. Wipe dry with towel.

6. Put on apron right side out and wrong side touching the
body, sliding the head into the neck strap. Neatly tie the
strap at the back.
7. Put out all the necessary articles needed for the specific
care.
8. Place waste paper bag outside of work area.

9. Close the bag.

10. Proceed in performing the necessary nursing care


treatment.
11. After giving the treatment, clean all things and sanitize the
equipment used in the procedure.
12. Perform hand washing again.

13. Open the bag and return all articles in their proper places
inside the bag.
14. Remove apron, folding it away from the person, the soiled
side in and the clean side out. Place it in between flaps of
the bag and close the bag.
15. Fold the plastic lining in between the flaps of the bag and
close the bag.
16. Ask the family to dispose the paper bag with soiled
dressing.
17. Take the record and have a conference with the mother on
matters relevant to health care. Write down all the
necessary data, observations, nursing care and treatment
rendered.
18. Make an appointment for the next visit (either home or
clinic) taking note of the date and time.
