LESSON 3: Composing Clear and Coherent Sentences Using Adverbs

Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, and other adverbs.

KINDS OF ADVERBS
1. ADVERB OF MANNER
 It answers the questions how or in what manner.
 It is formed by adding the suffix -ly to the adjective.
Examples:
slowly tenderly gracefully carefully
quickly honestly eagerly orderly

a. He arrived safely.
How did he arrive?
Answer: safely (The word safely is an adverb that tells how he
arrived and modifies the verb arrived.)

2. ADVERB OF TIME
 It tells us when an action happened and also for how long.
Examples:
early last year soon
lately next month today
later now tonight
last month tomorrow yesterday

a. He woke up early this morning.


When did he wake up early?
Answer: this morning (The phrase this morning is an adverb that
tells when he woke up early and modifies the verb woke up. The
phrase also modifies the other adverb early.)
3. ADVERB OF PLACE
 It tells us where something happens. They are usually placed after the
main verb or after the clause that they modify.

Examples:
around everywhere north
abroad here outside
back inside somewhere
behind nearby toward

a. She is busy cleaning in the kitchen.


Where is she cleaning?
Answer: in the kitchen (The phrase in the kitchen tells when she
is cleaning and modifies the verb cleaning.)

4. ADVERB OF FREQUENCY
 It tells how often the action is done. It also shows repeated action.
Examples:
ever occasionally regularly
everyday often seldom
frequently normally sometimes

a. She takes the boat to the mainland everyday.


How often does she take the boat to the mainland?
Answer: everyday (The word everyday is an adverb that tells how
often she takes the boat.)

5. ADVERB OF DEGREE
 It tells us about the intensity or degree of an action, an adjective, or
another adverb.
 It answers the questions how much or how little.
Examples:
almost extremely quite
enough just too

a. I ate too much chocolate during our recess time.


How much chocolate did I eat during our recess time?
Answer: too much (The phrase too much is an adverb. It modifies
the verb ate and tells how much chocolate she ate during recess
time.)

6. ADVERB OF AFFIRMATION AND NEGATION


 It indicates negative and positive situation.

Examples:
a. The students were not informed.
(The word not modifies the verb informed and indicates negation.)

b. Sure, I can help you.


(The word sure modifies the verb phrase can help and indicates
affirmation.)

time to study our lessons very well.
Grace: Yes, I have to study our lessons now. I need to help mother in the house

Angel: Do you always help your mother at home?
Grace: Yes, mother often works hard at home. I don’t want her to get too tired.
Angel: Your mother is very lucky to have a daughter like you, Grace.
Grace: Thank you, Angel. I am also very lucky to have her as my mother.
