Chapter I
Introduction
Many students studying STEM Strand face an abundance of societal and parental
pressures. Academic pressure is the pressure put on students from work overload, long periods of
studying and high grade expectations. According to Ellissa Hatoum (2021) this is a very difficult
and overwhelming time for students as there is a high demand for students to do well and more
pressure put on them from their parents, teachers and society. Every student experiences
This study intends to investigate the many forms of academic pressure that students
experience and how it influences both their academic performance and overall wellbeing. Due to
the increasing expectations and obligations placed on students by society, their families, and the
educational system, high levels of stress and anxiety may have negative long-term effects on
students' mental and physical health. The greater the academic pressure, the worse the parent–
child relationship, and the lower the self-control ability; children’s subjective well-being is often
low, thus increasing the risk of problem behavior (Qutaiba et al., 2012; Bücker et al., 2018).
demands of time and energy to achieve specific academic goals. The stress can come from a
variety of potential sources and have a myriad of impacts on students both emotionally and
academically. (Pacific Teen Treatment, 2023. The stress experienced by students may stem from

institutions due to a surge in discrimination and lack of mental healthcare services, especially
among developing nations including the Philippines. However, there remained to be sparse
information regarding mental health in these settings. This study determined the relationship and

Students at all educational levels frequently suffer academic pressure. It alludes to the
pressure and demands that students experience as they work to satisfy academic standards, do
well on exams, and earn good scores. Academic pressure has been studied from several angles,
including its causes, impacts, and coping mechanisms. Many factors, including parental
expectations, peer competition, workload, and the need to succeed, have been linked to academic
heightened anxiety, depression, and physical health issues, have been the subject of more
research.
How does academic pressure trigger a mental health condition in terms of the following
Due to the amount of academic workload they carry, students have often been viewed as
stressed citizens. Stress is an emotional feeling that makes the person feel insecure and
dissatisfied with the situation he or she must resolve. (International Journal of Academic
Multidisciplinary Research, 2021). The dissatisfaction they are feeling is from academic pressure.
"Give me a break” is often used by people to express disbelief and exasperation over something
ridiculous or trying. (Cito Beltran - The Philippine Star, 2021). Students will be under pressure
and unable to communicate this properly due to the expectations of many. Students' stress levels
tend to rise due to the amount of academic workload burnout they experience. Students under
academic stress may engage in emotional eating or meal skipping (Choi, 2020). Students spend
New research has shed some light on the reason behind this feeling and shows that
overloading students causes not only academic stress, but also takes a toll on students’ mental and
physical health, which, unsurprisingly, hinders learning. (Stenger – informED, 2018). It has many
claims and evidences that too much workloads associated with pressure can cause a mental and
physical health condition. Teachers are assigning such a large amount of at-home work that isn’t
necessary for good grades and only makes learning and life harder. (Remy Merrill, 2020).
Because of this, students can’t get enough of sleep that is bad for their health. Sacrificing sleep is
in no way a small issue. Sleep is absolutely crucial to the health and well-being of a teenager as
The American Academy of Sleep Medicine has recommended that teenagers should get 8-10
hours of sleep a night. There is no way that any Masters student could get 8-10 hours of sleep
with the amount of work we get. (Sandoval, 2021). Because of lack of sleep, students will
become more pressured as they do their tasks due to the brain’s incorrect working.
DepEd’s own National Achievement Test (NAT) shows that Filipino students fall below
the minimum proficiency score of 75 percent. One of the problems that educators are facing
nowadays is the low academic performance of the students which is attributed to their inability to
read, worst low if no comprehension at all. (J. Masigan - The Philippine Star 2022). The
accessibility of educational and curricular materials, the traits and aspirations of learners, and the
amount of knowledge that educators possess. This scenario supports the idea that “Reading is the
vehicle of learning. Thus reading in totality is also the ability to comprehend. (The Freeman
PhilStar, 2018). Reading comprehension should be taught alongside reading for pleasure.
Reading ability starts to develop in the early years of childhood. With growing technological
advancements, demands for the industry with skilled and equipped workforce are proportionately
rising. With such outcomes, it is necessary to determine the status of the K-12 educational system
in the Philippines. (Haoran Xie - 2022) Also, the findings of this study will help stakeholders
monitor initiatives for filling in the country's current deficiencies in the K–12 educational system.
The explanation of underachievement and the search for its associated factors have been
of constant interest in educational research. However, there is a clear lack of agreement when it
comes to establishing the most appropriate standards or criteria for its definition. (A cross-
country analysis through PISA, George Waddell - 2018) Family factors, which show significant
heterogeneity between the regions that make up the sample, come in second to these variables in
importance. The good academic performance of students at the Senior High School is of
paramount importance in every educational system. The current paper used a narrative review
method to review the literature on the academic performance of students at Senior High Schools
and various factors affecting students’ performance (lei yi, 2021). This provides the justification
for the requirement for education. This is the official journal of the IFIP Technical Committee on
technologies and education (Tatnall, 2021). Explores concepts, analyzes specific examples and
Striving for perfection can lead to procrastination. (Lobo, 2022). And when
procrastinating, we experience pressure. This is because we were immediately aware that we had
a limited amount of time to perform our tasks. Perfectionism is commonly associated with
striving very hard to reach high unattainable and unrealistic goals or standards. (T. Tan, 2022).
Hiding behind the “perfect” mask, they say. Due to compulsion, students would often pretend to
be perfect. They would do everything to make it under control. The students’ perception that their
school environments focus more on competition and performance over learning can be developed
because of intense competition between Philippine schools that value characteristics shared
among Westerners, including low long-term orientation (fast results), crab mentality, and success
Student performance matters. Students who perform well have better health, earn a larger
income and contribute more to society than those who perform poorly. (Madigan, 2019). The
word perfection comes from a Latin word perficere which means ‘to complete or finish. (Amirali,
2019). Students often compete because of the pressure they are feeling. Everyone expects them to
According to Monash Thrive (2021) academic stress is a major source of stress, anxiety,
Knowing what you need to accomplish and working through each issue are the keys to managing
it. There are certain strategies to assist a student keep on top of their studies and tests and
minimize the build-up of academic stress, such as getting organized early, Don't let it build up,
asking for help if they need it, forgiving themselves if things don't go well, and taking care of
yourself.
psychology as a reaction to job stimuli that has negative repercussions for those who are exposed
to them. Many studies have found that several factors influence the stress levels of university
faculty personnel. They include an increase in the number of students assigned to teach, a
shortage of university funds, resources, and recognition, as well as a lack of administrative and
colleague support. Various research looked into the stress levels of university professors in the
Philippines.
According to Jomell M. Santiago (2019) Parents always want the best for their children.
Life without parental support can be a disaster. They are the one who guides their children
through hardships and success. On the other hand, parental pressure impacts students. Mostly, it
is negative that can harm children's emotional and physical, social, and moral aspects. Students
are terrified that they may not reach the level of expectation of their parents. Overall, it's
important for parents to support their children's goals and aspirations, but not to the point where it
creates a negative impact on their mental health and well-being. Parents should strive to provide a
balance of support and encouragement while also allowing their children to make their own
According to Isabelle Roskam (2021) High levels of stress in the parenting domain can
lead to parental burnout, a condition that has severe consequences for both parents and children.
It is not yet clear, however, whether parental burnout varies by culture, and if so, why it might do
so. Most parents want their children to be happy and successful. But our own definitions of
happiness and success may not ring true for our children.
The research also explored whether there is significant relationship between, time
management, learning motivation and academic performance of the dental clinicians and
proposed action plans, based on the findings. The findings revealed that task prioritization is the,
dominant time management skill among junior and senior dental clinicians. (Borbon – 2021)
Students may use their time differently from one another and may have various motivations. This
study focuses only on Poor Time Management in the enhancement of quality education among
the Accountancy, Business Management students. Time management is not a skill we are usually
taught growing up, so developing an organized approach to our studies is an opportunity to learn
how to work more efficiently. (KNG Colobong – 2021) The pupils' ability to manage their time is
very significant. Although the government provides free education, poverty is one of Filipino
students' most common challenges in their pursuit of basic education. The results revealed that
they performed satisfactorily in math while practicing moderate time management and having
moderate self-efficacy in the subject. (Peteros, et. al. – 2021) To shape and encourage positive
responses in pupils, it is highly advised that time management skills be incorporated into the
curriculum.
Effective time management is associated with greater academic performance and lower
levels of anxiety in students. This article examines the self-reported time management behaviors
of undergraduate engineering students using the Time Management Behavior Scale (Richelle V.
Adams - 2019) It was discovered that the factor that significantly correlated with cumulative
grade point average was students' perceived control of time. Academic procrastination is a fact
related to the delay or postpone of academic work until last minute. In order to analyze possible
causes and/or solutions, we studied if longer time for accomplishing an assignment incentives or
current issue, and solutions should be created. The primary achievement of distance and regular
students is managing, time effectively. It is a skill to manage time, and every learner must
familiar and command on this skill for the sake of, better results. (Pakistan Journal of Distance &
Online Learning- 2019) Web-based learning students could more emphasis on having good time
Theoretical Framework
This research is based on the study of Cristobella Durrette on February 5, 2020. She
mentioned a specific person who experiences academic pressure as well on her article. Joel
Phillips experienced academic pressure throughout his entire educational career. “Academic
pressure has caused me to feel a lot of stress over my time in college,” Phillips said. “I have lost
sleep, lost productivity, and I frequently forget to eat when I have deadlines coming up.” A lot of
students experiences what Phillips had experienced. Phillips was forced to do good in his studies
in order to receive funds. This research study is very similar to that article that is why it became
our basis on our said topic. Because of the academic pressure of Phillips, a lot of students,
including us were awakened and decided to talk about this issue. Academic pressure is formally
defined as an experience in which a student is burdened by the demands of time and energy to
achieve specific academic goals. Self and parental pressure is associated with this. Since a lot of
people aren’t aware of the academic pressure that the students’ experiences, we decided to come
up for this topic. To stand for those who experiences pressure just like what Phillips had
experienced.
General Statement:
This research study aims to assess every STEM student who might be suffering with a
mental illness due to academic pressure and high expectations from the students while studying
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics during S.Y 2022 – 2023 in St. Augustine
Specific Questions:
How does academic pressure trigger a mental health condition in terms of:
This research study mainly focuses on the experiences and effects of academic pressure
to students. Academic pressure affects their overall well-being since it is an academic problem
that affects a student’s mental and physical health. Because of this effect, their behavior towards
someone, for example, their classmates, is affected too. Benefits from this research are
specifically for students, parents, teachers, and other researchers. This research’s goal is to
Students: since they are the most affected of this topic, this research is beneficial to them
because it will help them survive their studies. Their sufferings would be acknowledged by many
and the pressure that is given to them will be lessen since many will understand and be awakened
Parents: on the other hand, parents are one of the causes of this pressure to students.
Because of them, students would experience pressure whenever they attend school. This research
would be beneficial to them because it will help them realized the negative effects of this to their
children. They will know how to guide their children in the proper way.
Teachers: they are the one who gives tons of work load to students. Even though the tasks
they give are very understandable. This research will be beneficial to teachers because they will
be aware of the hidden sufferings of students while they are doing their assigned task. They
would be able to know what measures they should or do. They can be less hard on students.
Other researchers: using the internet and other resources, other researchers would gain
knowledge about this research study. This research would be beneficial to them because this can
serve as their reference of ideas when making a research paper about the same topic. It would be
quite easier for them to find information and such. They would also be aware about the effects of
