DISEMAK OLEH :
It is important for us within the community to protect and preserve our environment in order to
produce a long-lasting flourishing planet. However, these days awareness in regards to this
manner is definitely scarce. Therefore, one of the ways that we can educate the public about the
significance of valuing the good of our nature is by executing public clean-ups. Specifically, our
project focuses on beach clean-ups, and the theme of our project is waste management.
One of the main reasons why we came up with this program is because beaches are known to be
a place of tourist attraction. Due to this, many local families, friends and foreign tourists would
come to visit to relieve their stress and explore the wonders that the beach has to offer. However,
a lot of rubbish and trash can be seen littered all over the place in the aftermath of their visitation.
This affects the beautiful image of these infamous attractions, as well as, impacts the
environment of the coastline and seawater. Waste such as plastics, polystyrene and leftover foods
that are not properly disposed of can cause pollution to the area, thus, making it uninhabitable in
the long run if nothing is being done to prevent such outcomes. Beautiful flora and fauna will be
destroyed whether it be on the ground or even underwater. Therefore, this program is essential to
instil awareness and a sense of responsibility to the public concerning the importance of caring
for our environment and nature. Through public beach clean-ups, we hope to clear the beach of
any polluting waste, dispose of, recycle and control waste materials to restore them to their
natural state and prolong their sustainability.
1.3 Objectives
We had chosen our leader via the WhatsApp voting poll feature a few days prior. As
decided Aqilah was chosen to be the leader. The meeting started with an introduction from our
leader about our main discussion topic. The secretary, Sri wrote down every idea and suggestion
being discussed as a group. Then Aisha Nabila and Jeyshiella kept tabs on our progress meeting
using their phones. All ideas and suggestions were put up for a vote by the whole team. The
decisions were made based on the majority of the votes and were evaluated and finalized by the
leader. We divided our work division and all proposals and paperwork related were agreed by all
to be handled by the director, secretary and senior assistant. We decided to call our project
“Cleaning While Healing”.
It was agreed that the project would commence on Wednesday, the 4th of October and we
gathered as a group at 2:30 pm in front of the Dewan Naib Canselor in UNISEL. The group was
divided into two cars and the group reached Sekinchan beach at 3:45 pm. Upon arrival, the group
gathered together to discuss the duties of each member which included the main objective which
was to clean the beach and which team took which area, the questions we would ask visitors at
the beach, and how we were going to document our project. After our leader Aqilah clarified our
duties, Winifred made a list of questions to ask visitors while Intan and Monica set up the banner
poster. The ones in charge of interviewing were Winifred, Nashwa, Jeyshiella, Monica and
Shamni. There were Aisha Nabila and Intan who were in charge of documenting our activities
and interview sessions while the remaining members Sri, Aqilah, and Marsha focused on
cleaning the beach area.
While Sri, Marsha, and Aqilah were picking up the littered beach on the left area of the
beach, the other members set out to find beach visitors who would be willing to be interviewed.
The cleanliness of the beach on a weekday was unfortunate, there was litter such as plastic
bottles, plastic packets from the nearby food stalls, glass bottles, torn clothing, and many more
types of rubbish. The members who focused their duties on the beach covered a large area of the
beach. Each member was given a pair of gloves and a number of large plastic bags to collect the
rubbish. On the beach itself, amongst the rubbish, there were many cigarette buds found as well
as beverage bottles and food packets. This has shown that there are a number of irresponsible
people that would visit the beach and it should be taken into account that other visitors would
leave the litter there although they see it. The beach provides a sufficient amount of rubbish bins
not too far from the beach and along the food stall areas, leaving little to no excuse for the
amount of litter. As time went on, all members collected the litter from the beach as well as from
the food stall areas and the litter was then disposed of in the provided rubbish bins. The group
was in high spirits during the cleaning session, such an activity proved to be therapeutic thus our
title ‘Cleaning while Healing’ was truly fitting.
The interview session group managed to find time and interviewed a total of five
different groups of people with different backgrounds. The variety in their backgrounds helped in
revealing different perspectives that people might have on the importance of a clean
environment. The first interview was conducted by Winifred and Shamni and the visitors were an
Indian family, a couple of siblings while Tamil was the language of choice. The second interview
was conducted by Jeyshiella and Monica where they interviewed a food stall vendor, she felt
comfortable conversing in Malay. The third interview was conducted by Jeyshiella where the
visitors were a group of school students and they conversed in both English and Malay. The
fourth interview was conducted by Winifred and she interviewed a group of friends who were
Chinese while they conversed in English. The final interview was conducted by Nashwa who
interviewed a pair of friends and the interview was done in English. Out of the five interviews
conducted, all five had testified that the cleanliness of the beach was subpar or overall dirty and
needed improvement. One of the interview questions asked the visitors what they would
recommend for the improvement of the beach and in the first interview, the visitor suggested
hiring independent clubs or sponsors to execute a gotong-royong while the other four suggested
similar ideas of putting up a sign board to remind visitors to not litter and educate the young
generation. All five visitors also answered the question would they recommend others to visit the
beach and they all said yes they would.
We wrapped up the project by documenting the members’ final thoughts on the activity
as well as taking photographs to commemorate the project. The briefing also included the
members’ gratitude for the teamwork and cooperation everyone committed themselves to make
the project a success.
2.3 Impact to Community (Post-production)
Conducting a cleaning program called "Cleaning While Healing" with a theme of waste
management on a beach can have multifaceted positive impacts on society. The program will
result in a cleaner beach environment, reducing the pollution caused by litter. This not only
enhances the aesthetic appeal of the area but also makes it more enjoyable for both locals and
tourists. The program educates participants about the importance of responsible waste
management and its impact on the environment. This knowledge can lead to long-term
behavioral changes. Moreover, a cleaner beach environment reduces health risks associated with
exposure to hazardous waste materials. It can also promote outdoor physical activities, which
contribute to a healthier lifestyle. Involving young people in the program promotes
environmental awareness and responsibility from an early age. It can inspire the next generation
of environmental leaders. Also, the program can serve as a platform to educate participants and
the wider community about sustainable waste management practices, such as recycling and
reducing plastic use.
The summary of the project’s expenditure includes the purchase of materials such as hand gloves
(RM1.80) and plastic bags (RM3.40). We prepared and printed out a banner poster which was
A3 sized (RM3.00) as well as allocation for petrol money for two cars (RM40/per car) so each
member paid RM8.82 to the treasurer Monica. The expenses for the project went according to
plan with no additional or less cost.
Total = RM 88.20
Total = RM 88.20
