Earth and Life Science LESSON 1

Earth is the only planet in the Solar System that can support life due to its unique properties. It is located in the habitable zone where temperatures allow liquid water to exist. Earth also has an atmosphere that regulates temperatures and provides gases necessary for life, sources of energy and nutrients from the Sun and Earth's interior, and a magnetic field that shields the planet. No other planets in the Solar System currently have all the conditions required to support life as we know it.

PLANET EARTH and

ITS PROPETIES TO SUPPORT LIFE

Recognize the uniqueness of Earth being the only planet in
the Solar System with properties necessary to support life.
Before we start with the lesson,
write down your idea on the
question:
Why Earth is the ONLY planet in
Solar System that can support life?

Observe our neighbor planets – Venus and Mars. What are the similarities and differences of these planets compared to Earth? Even though they are near our
planet, life is not possible in Venus and Mars. One explanation is somehow related to the story of “Goldilocks and the 3 Bears”. Are you familiar with the story?

To compare and contract the planets, you can visit the link: https://nssdc.gsfc.nasa.gov/planetary/factsheet/
ACTIVITY 1

1. Divide the class into small groups and ask

each group to create a diagram or illustration
that explains the unique properties of Earth that
make it suitable for life.
2. Ask each group to present their diagrams and
discuss their understanding of the topic.
What is common

Goldilocks?

❑ the only habitable planet or planet known in the Solar System that
can support life

Factors that Makes
Earth Habitable
Factors that Makes Earth Habitable

TEMPERATURE
▪ Influences how quickly atoms & molecules
move
▪ Allows liquid water to exist on Earth’s surface
which is favorable to life.
Factors that Makes Earth Habitable

WATER
▪ Dissolves & transports chemicals
within and to and from a cell
▪ The existence of
water in three phases
is very essential to
Earth’s diverse
ecosystem.
Factors that Makes Earth Habitable

ATMOSPHERE
▪ Traps heat, shields the
surface from harmful
radiation, and provides
chemicals needed for
life, such as nitrogen and
carbon dioxide.
▪ It regulates the balance
of water, oxygen and
carbon dioxide
Factors that Makes Earth Habitable
ENERGY from the SUN
▪ Light or chemical energy is used by organisms to run
their life processes such as the process of
photosynthesis used by producers like plants.
Factors that Makes Earth Habitable

NUTRIENTS
▪ Used to build and maintain an organism’s body.
Factors that Makes Earth Habitable

MAGNETIC FIELD
▪ a planet requires a rapidly
rotating magnetic field to
protect it from flares from
nearby stars and from
harmful radiation
