CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM

Introduction

Waste disposal is a huge cause for concern in the present world. The disposal method

of a large amount of generated waste has had an adverse effect on the environment.

Unplanned open and landfill sites made by municipal is a common method of disposal of

waste. Human health, plant, and animal life are affected due to this method. The harmful

method used for waste disposal generates harmful chemicals which contaminate surface and

groundwater. It can give rise to disease vectors which spread harmful diseases. This also

degrades the aesthetic value of the natural environment and it is an unavailing use of land

resources.

In Pagadian City, garbage collectors play an important role in the recycling of urban

solid waste. Garbage collectors and conservancy staff have higher morbidity due to infections

of the skin, respiratory, gastrointestinal tract and multisystem allergic disorders, in addition to

a high circulation of bites of mammals, dogs, and other vermin. Dependency on the garbage

collectors can be diminished if segregation takes place at the source of municipal waste

generation. The economic value of the waste generated is not realized unless it is recycled

completely. Several advancement in technology have also allowed the garbage to be

processed into useful entities such as waste to energy, where waste can be used to generate

synthetic gas (syngas) made up of carbon monoxide and hydrogen.

It has been viewed that one of the most raised problem in the society is environmental

problems concerning improper waste management that leads to pollution. Some of the

reasons why this happens are lack of discipline from citizens, lack of budget and monitoring
from the local government, and lack of knowledge in regards to the result of this

undisciplined act. When the waste is segregated into basic streams such as wet, dry, and

metallic waste has a higher potential of recovery and consequently recycled and reused.

Through this study, it is encouraged to use Automatic Garbage Segregator in doing proper

waste management. With the use of this device, neglected duties as a citizen to clean the

environment and is not acceptable anymore because Automatic Garbage Segregator can be

operated without human intervention. This system is an income generated system in which in

each garbage they will obtain 1 point, and in 100 points is equivalent to 1 peso. Furthermore,

with the help of Automatic Garbage Segregator, the problem with waste and pollution will be

lessen.

This research study contribute valuable insights into the role of garbage segregator

technology as a catalyst for advancing sustainable waste management practices. Through

empirical analysis and stakeholder engagement, this study aims to inform policy makers,

urban planners, waste management professionals, and community stakeholders about the

potential benefits and challenges associated with the adaption and implementation of garbage

segregator technology. Ultimately, the findings of this research aspire to facilitate evidence-

based decision-making and foster transformative changes towards a more sustainable and

resilient waste management paradigm.

Objectives of the Study

General objective

This research various specific goals such as evaluating the efficiency of garbage

segregators in sorting different types of waste, quantifying the increase in recycling rates

facilitated by segregators, analyzing the environmental benefits derived from proper waste
segregation, examining the economic viability of implementing garbage segregators, studying

social acceptance and behavioral changes associated with segregator design and functionality,

enhancing public health and safety through improved waste management practices, ensuring

long-term sustainability of segregator initiatives, and facilitating knowledge sharing and

capacity building among stakeholders.

Specific objective

The purpose of this research study is to investigate the effectiveness and feasibility of

integrating garbage segregators into existing waste management systems. Garbage

segregators are innovative devices designed to automatically sort and categorize different

types of waste materials, such as plastics, paper, glass and organic waste, thereby facilitating

the recycling and disposal process.

The objectives of this project are as follows:

1. To design and construct a low-cost Automatic garbage Segregator.

2. To fabricate a less complex Automatic Garbage segregator.

3. Use of Ultrasonic sensors to detect the level of bins.

4. Promoting technological innovation.

5. Income generated system.

Scope and Limitations

This system “automatic garbage segregator” are capable of maintaining the

environment clean, segregating the garbage, giving points in every garbage. This system

encourages the society to segregate garbages properly to obtain more points (100 points is

equivalent of 1 pesos).
The proposed system will be used in the society or community, and it all

establishments.

This system is bounded to the following:

1. Cannot segregate garbage itself if the garbage is mixed up.

2. Possible error/mistake in terms of segregation.

3. Limited garbage capacity.

Significance of the study

This research study benefited the following individuals or groups in Pagadian City as

the direct beneficiaries of the results of this system.

Society or community- It helps to make the society or community clean, and with the use of

this system they can earn revenue through gaining points in every garbage they throw.

Establishment- This will help their surroundings clean.

Researchers- This research study would help the researchers to gain more knowledge and

better understanding, the researcher can also help the society or community by making this

system.

Future researchers- This will help the future researchers to make this research study as their

basis for future purposes.
