Reading Section 3 (7 questions) (15 minutes)

Suzanne Al Houby

At a towering 8,848 meters, Mount Everest is the tallest mountain in the world and one of
the most dangerous. As well as confronting hazardous ice, blinding snow, and sub-zero
temperatures, climbers face storm-force winds and a lack of oxygen. Over 300 people have
died trying to climb the Everest since 1924.

The mountain, part of a range of awe-inspiring peaks between China and Nepal, was first
climbed by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay in 1953. It took another 20 years for the
first woman to climb the mountain, and, even now, only 530 women have reached the top.
One of those is Suzanne Al Houby. In 2011, Al Houby, a Palestinian-born mother-of-two,
became the first Arab woman to climb Mount Everest. A mountaineer and businesswoman
based in Sharjah, Al Houby is no stranger to the record books. She is the first Arab woman
to scale Mount Elbrus, Europe's highest point, and the first Palestinian woman to climb
Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak.

Kilimanjaro is where her love affair with mountains began, in 2001. "We were on a safari
trip in Tanzania, and the guide stopped the car and asked us to look out the window," she
recalls. She reacted by looking around, admiring the dusty landscape and the blue sky dotted
with white clouds.

"No! Look closer!" the guide said. Looking more carefully, Al Houby realized that one of
the clouds was snow on top of Mount Kilimanjaro. Al Houby was mesmerized by the
faraway mountain with its cover of ice and made a promise to herself that she would climb
it one day. A year later, in 2002, she returned to Tanzania. Inexperienced, she brought the
wrong climbing equipment. The weather was bad and she developed blisters on her feet.
Persevering despite the pain, Al Houby made each step into a little victory, and eventually
she had climbed her first mountain.

Nine years and many mountains later, Al Houby was again close to giving up, this time just
a few meters from the top of Mount Everest. It was May 16, 2011, and, with no energy left
after a 50-day trek and her body numb with cold, she could feel nothing. Somewhere she
found the strength to continue. Nearing the top, she saw a 3,000-meter drop on one side of
the mountain, into China, and a 4,000-meter drop on the other side into Nepal. Tears filled
her eyes as she realized she was going to make it, and twenty minutes later she was standing
proudly on top of the world.

Following her climb, Al Houby founded Rahhalah Explorers, the first adventure travel
company in the Middle East. The company returns a percentage of its income to the
communities they visit. But she also continued to climb, conquering mountains in South
America and Australia, and becoming the first Arab woman- and one of only 350 people
ever-to climb the highest mountains on each of the seven continents.

The final peak in Al Houby's seven-summit challenge, Mount Denali in Alaska was one of
her hardest ascents. On three previous Denali climbs, frostbite and severe weather forced
her to turn back. Al Houby had to carry her own weight in climbing gear and food, fighting
100 kph winds and temperatures of minus 30 degrees. On June 1, 2016, however, she finally
reached the top.
As Al Houby tells people on her adventure trips, 'If you believe in it, go for it!"
