Materials
Hula hoop
String
Rulers
Paper
Pencil
Drawings of circles (various sizes)
Teacher Directions
1. Prior to the activity, draw circles of different sizes on papers.
2. Define circumference for the class. Show the class a hula hoop, demonstrating how to find the distance around
the circle by laying string all the way around the hoop and then measuring the distance of the string.
3. Show students how to find the circumference of a circle using the formula C (circumference) = ? (pi) x d
(diameter). Demonstrate how to measure the diameter of the hula hoop using the string to measure from one
point on the hoop, through the center, to another point on the hoop.
4. Divide the class into pairs, and provide each group with string, rulers, paper, pencils and various drawings of
circles.
5. Have students measure the circumference of each circle by laying the string around the circle and measuring
it. Then, measure the circumference of each circle by measuring its diameter with a ruler and substituting it
into the circumference formula.
6. Encourage the class to compare the results of both measurements for each circle.
Discussion Questions
Were your measurements the same using string and the circumference formula? If not, what could have
accounted for the differences?
Why might you need to find the circumference of a circle?
Scavenger Hunt
Engage students in a circumference scavenger hunt.
Materials
Objects shaped like circles
Rulers
Pencils
Paper
Clipboards
Chart paper
Markers
Teacher Directions
1. Show the class a variety of objects that are shaped like circles. Discuss how to measure the diameter and
radius of a circle and use that measurement to find the circumference of a circle.
2. Divide the class into pairs, and give each pair rulers, pencils, paper, and clipboards.
3. Have the pairs travel around the classroom, school, school grounds, etc. looking for circular objects. #When
they find a circular object, students should write the name of the object on their paper and measure its
diameter or radius using their rulers.
4. Once the hunt is finished, students should figure out the circumferences of each object.
5. Provide the pairs with chart paper and markers and have them create a chart to display the circumferences of
the objects found during the scavenger hunt.
6. When the pairs are done, have them share their charts with the class.
Discussion Questions
Did any objects have the same circumference? Which ones?
How is finding the circumference different than finding the area of a circle?
Make a Pizza
Students will create pizzas with specific circumferences.
