A5. (a) The set of numbers {3, 5, 7, a} , under multiplication , forms a group. Write down
the value of a. [5]
(b) Suppose G = {1, 3, 5, 7} is a set of integers. Show that G forms a group under
multiplication modulo 8 and write and three subgroups of G. [10]
(c) Suppose H = {1, −1, i, −i} is a set of complex numbers. Show that H forms a
group under multiplication. [6]
(d) Let G = (Z4 , +), H = (Z3 , +);
(i) What is the elements of G × H. [3]
(ii) What is the identity element of G × H. [2]
(iii) What is the inverse of (3, 1) ∈ G × H. [3]
A6. (a) Suppose a ∈ G, G a group, X = {e, a, a3 }. How many different elements has the
subset XY if;
(i) |a| = 4. [3]
(ii) |a| = 6. [3]
(b) Why (Z5 , +) is not acyclic group. [4]
(c) Let G = (Z6 , +) = {(0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5}. Then H = {0, 1} and K = {0, 2, 4} are
subgroups of G. Find the left cosets of H in G and all left cosets of K in G. [6]
(d) Suppose G is a group and H ≤ G for a, b ∈ G, prove that the relation a ≡ b mod
H is an equivalence relation. [6]
