Sake, FINAL (SESSION FEBRUARY 2021) Mechanics of Machine TME21303 LECTURER FEBRUARY 2021 TIME : 3 HOURS Instructions : 1. Candidates must read all questions carefully. 2. The examination script consists of the followings: Part ayPes of | instruction Duration lauestions a | ESSAY ‘Answer ALL question. 45 Minutes (Compulsory) ESSAY 2 Hours 18 8 | Onion Answer 3 out of § questions. tour Mechanics of Machine PARTA (25 Marks) Duration : 45 Minutes INSTRUCTION This part consists of ONE (1) COMPULSARY question. Answer the question in the answer sheets provided. (Question 1) A kinematic diagram or kinematic scheme illustrates the connectivity of links and joints of a mechanism or machine rather than the dimensions or shape of the parts. Draw the kinematic diagram and compute the ‘mobility of each mechanism illustrated below: (a) Figure 4 (9 marks) (b) Figure 2 (8 marks) (©) Figure 3 (8 marks) 25 marks PART B (ESSAY Option) (75 Marks) Duration : 2 Hours 15 Minutes INSTRUCTION This part consists of FIVE (5) questions. Answer THREE (3) questions only in the answer booklet provided, (Question 1) Balancing is the process of designing or modifying machinery so that the unbalance is reduced to an acceptable level and if possible is eliminated entirely. Four masses m, ma, mg and mg are 200 kg, 300 kg, 240 kg and 260 kg respectively. The corresponding radii of rotation are 0.2 m, 0.15 m, 0.25 m and 0.3 m respectively and the angles between successive masses are 45°, 75° and 135°. Find the position and magnitude of the balance mass required, if its radius of rotation is 0.2 m. 25 marks (Question 2) Belt drives are applied where the rotational speeds are relatively high. A belt drive is desired to couple the motor with a mixer for processing com syrup, The 25 hp electric motor is rated at 950 rev/ min and the mixer must operate as close to 250 revimin as possible. Determine the: (a) appropriate belt size. (1 marks) (b) ideal diameter for driver sheave (7 marks) (6) suitable belt length, (13 marks) (d) actual centre distance. (4 marks) 25 marks (Question 3) Acam is to be used for a platform that will repeatedly lit boxes from a lower conveyor to an upper conveyor. This machine is shown in Figure 4. When the follower motion sequence is as follows: i, Rise 2 inches within1.2 seconds ii, Dwell for 0.3 seconds iii. Fall 1 inches within 0.9 seconds iv, Dwell 0.6 seconds v. Fall inches within 0.9seconds re 8 © Figure 4 Determine the: (a) time for a full cycle (2 marks) (b) required rotational speed of the cam. (4 marks) (0) cam rotation for each follower motion interval. (10 marks) (d) plot the displacement diagram. (9 marks) 25 marks (Question 4) Balancing of several masses rotating in different plane is one of the types in balancing field. Four masses 150 kg, 200 kg, 100 kg and 250 kg are attached to a shaft revolving at radii 150 mm, 200 mm, 100 mm and 250 mm; in planes A, B, C and D respectively. The planes B, C and D are at distances 350 mm, 500 mm and 800 mm from plane A. The masses in planes B, C and D are at an angle 105°, 200° and 300° measured anticlockwise from mass in plane A. It is required to balance the system by placing the balancing masses in the planes P and Q which are midway between the planes A and B, and between C and D respectively. If the balancing masses revolve at radius 180 mm, find the magnitude and angular positions of the balance masses. 25 marks (Question 5) Static equilibrium is applicable in many machines where the changes in movement are gradual or the mass of the components is negligible. Figure 5 illustrated three force acting on the eyebolt. Figure 5 If Fy = 600 N and @ = 30°. Determine the: (a) magnitude of the resultant force. (20 marks) (b) direction of the resultant force. ( marks) 25 marks END OF QUESTION
