PHYF110 PhyLab

This document provides an introduction and overview for a physics laboratory course. It outlines the course objectives, experiments, group formation, evaluation scheme, and laboratory rules and procedures. The key points are: - The course aims to develop hands-on learning, experimental skills, and data analysis skills through 11 required experiments completed over the semester in groups of 3 students. - Experiments are coded and assigned to groups on a rotating basis each week. The top 10 of 11 experiments will count towards the final evaluation. - Students will be evaluated based on pre-lab quizzes, laboratory reports, and a comprehensive exam. - Laboratory sessions follow a defined timeline and rules to ensure safety and academic integrity. Registration and formation of groups
• In each section there will be 12 groups.
• Each group will contain 3 students
• Group formation will be done on the first day
• Enter group members name and ID in a sheet next to the computer
• Note down your group ID
Sequence of experiments
• All groups of a given section will do the error analysis on First lab
session.
• Next week (2nd lab session) Group01 will do exp. 01, Group02 will do
exp.02 and so on
• Whenever there is ‘No experiment’ appear students will not do
experiments.
• To make 12 groups, a number code has been assigned to ‘No
experiment’ items in list. They corresponds to group 6 and group12.
Rotation of experiments
• First lab: all will do Error analysis
• Second lab:Gr01-Exp01, Gr0-Exp. 02 and so on(Gr 06 and Gr 12 are
free)
• 3rd lab: Group01-Exp 02, Gr02-Exp 03 and so on(Gr 05 and Gr 11 are
free) Gr12-Exp01
• For next lab sessions this cycle will continue
Course server
• PHOTON is the name of the campus course server. The courses are
managed using a open source learning management system called
MOODLE.
• Things related to Physics Lab can be found on Physics Lab web pages
hosted by the PHOTON server.
• You can access photon via http://photon.bits-goa.ac.in or
http://10.1.1.242/moodle/ from anywhere within the campus(only
using BITS network)
Course login at Moodle
• Login ID : BITS Email id
• Password: If you have forgotten your password or wish to generate a
password for the first time, do it via “Forgot Password” link on the
login page.
Evaluation Scheme
Component -Weightage - Marks • Each Viva-3 marks
• Pre-lab Quiz -20% -40 3*10=30 marks will be scaled to
40 marks at the end of
• Lab Reports -50% -100 evaluation
• Comprehensive Exam -30% - 60 • Each report-10 marks
10*10=100 marks will be scaled
Total -100% - 200
to 100 marks for final evaluation

• Quiz marks will be displayed only during certain

times during the semester.
• Lab report marks can be viewed as soon as the
Instructor grades your report; marks may differ
within a group.
Timeline of a laboratory session
• Students enter the lab with a pen only. Rough sheet will be provided by the lab
assistant.
• Lab session begins.
• Attendance will be taken within the first ten minutes.
• First ten minutes: Members of a given group attempt the Pre-lab quiz
individually(at Moodle).
• Next one hour and thirty minutes: Complete the experiment and the data
analysis. Use the template provided to you for data entry
• Last ten minutes: Show the lab data to the Instructor and upload it at course page
after getting their approval. There will be a lab data link at Moodle.
• Report should be uploaded on the same day using the report link. You are
required to download the same data file that you have downloaded to make
report.
Laboratory rules
1. Enter the lab on time. If late by more than 10 minutes, you lose
attendance and all the credit for that day’s lab.
2. The group members will take their quizzes individually. They are
expected to finish their quiz within the first 10 minutes of the session.
3. The rest of the session is for doing the experiment.
4. Towards the end of the session, each member of the group shall upload
the lab report into his/her account, respectively, after getting the
approval from the Instructor.
5. Once files are uploaded in Moodle, delete these files from the computer.
Laboratory rules contd..
Do NOT
6. carry anything other than a pen.
7. carry cell phones inside the lab.
8. fiddle or play frivolously with equipment.
9. discuss with other Groups.
10. refer the lab manual during quiz session.
11. share your password with others.
Laboratory rules contd..
12. Malpractices like copying and hacking into others account will be considered as
serious offense and dealt with accordingly.
Punishments: cancellation of registration (for cheating) and could be as severe
as discontinuation from the program for impersonation cases!
13. Late submitted reports will not be considered for grading.
14. No extra time for data file submission.
14. Make-Up policy
1. Permission of the Instructor-in-charge required
2. Application to be given to the Instructor-in-charge personally
3. Make-up session granted only in genuine cases
4. In case of illness, Medical Certificate from BITS Medical Centre is
mandatory. Any prescription from outside medical practitioners will
not be considered for make up.

Data Analysis using Open Office
Important things to learn and master
(To know more about open office, see http://www.tutorialsforopenoffice.org)
• Every single cell can be used as a calculator
• Copying and/or “incrementing” cell contents along rows or columns,
• Creating scatter plots.
Data Analysis using Open Office contd..
Mathematical and statistical functions: In particular, the LINEST
function.
• =average(data-range) finds the average of the data
• =stdev(data-range) finds the std dev of the data
• =index(linest(y-range,x-range,1,1),1,1) finds the best fit slope
• =index(linest(y-range,x-range,1,1),2,1) finds the error in the best fit
slope
• =index(linest(y-range,x-range,1,1),1,2) finds the best fit intercept
• =index(linest(y-range,x-range,1,1),2,2) finds the error in the best fit
intercept
Other resources
• Video clip for getting familiar with apparatus and procedure
• There is also a lab manual for each experiments.
• You are also encouraged to prepare yourself (before coming to
class)with the help of other web recourses
