1. A soil sample has a porosity of 30% the specific gravity of solids is 2.60. Calculate (a)
void ratio, (b) dry density (c) unit weight if the soil is 50% saturated and (d) unit
weight if the soil is completely saturated. (Feburary-2020 R-15)
2. A dry soil has a void ratio of 0.65 and its grain specific gravity is 2.80, what is its unit
weight? Water is added to the sample so that its degree of saturation is 60% without
any change in void ratio. Determine the water content and unit weight. The sample is
next placed below water. Determine the true unit weight (not considering buoyancy)
if the degree of saturation is 95% and 100% respectively. (November, 2021 R-19,

3. The moist unit weight of a soil is 16.50 kN/m 3. Given that the water content = 15%
and specific gravity of soil solids = 2.70, find the dry unit weight, porosity, degree of

4. A soil sample has a bulk unit weight of 21 kN/m 3 and the degree of saturation is 80%.
Determine its void ratio and water content if the specific gravity of solids is 2.65.

5. A soil sample of saturated clay has a diameter of 50mm and the height of 10mm. The
mass of saturated sample is 220 grams and its mass when oven dried is 150 grams.

6. One cubic metre of wet soil weights 19.80KN. If the specific gravity of soil particles
is 2.70 and water content is 11%, find the void ratio, dry density and degree of

7. A sample of moist soil has a volume of 8100 cm 3 and weighs 190 N. Its oven dry
weight is 168 N. Assuming G=2.6, calculate its (i) water content (ii) moist unit weight
(iii) dry unit weight (iv) void ratio (v) degree of saturation and (vi) quantity of water
to be added to 1 m3 of moist soil to saturate the soil. (February, 2019)
8. A sample of saturated soil has a water content of 30 percent and a bulk unit weight of
25 KN/m3. Determine dry density, void ratio and specific gravity of solid particles.
What would be the bulk unit weight of the same soil at the same void ratio but a
degree of saturation of 80%? Take ɤw = 10kN/m3. (February, 2021 R-15)
9. A saturated sample of soil has a water content of 25%. Adopting G=2.7, calculate dry
unit weight, saturated unit weight and submerged unit weight. (February, 2019)

10. The moist soil sample weight 3.52N. After drying in an oven, its weight is reduced to
2.9N. The specific gravity of solids and the mass specific gravity are respectively 2.65
and 1.85. Determine the water content, void ratio, porosity, and the degree of

11. Dry soil with G= 2.71 is mixed with 16% by weight of water and compacted to
produce a cylindrical sample of 38 mm diameter and 16mm long with 6% air content.
Calculate the mass of the dry soil that will be required and the void ratio of the

12. A cube of dried clay having sides 5 cm long, weight 135 grams. The same cube of
soil, when saturated at unchanged volume, weighs 195 grams. Find the specific

13. The void ratios at the densest, loosest, and natural state of a sand deposit are 0.2, 0.6,
and 0.4, respectively. Determine the relative density of the deposit and comment on

14. Determine the relative density of saturated sand deposit having a moisture content of
25%, if maximum and minimum void ratios of sand are 0.75 and 0.25, respectively,
and specific gravity of sand particles is 2.67?
15. The maximum and minimum dry unit weights of sand, determined in the laboratory,
are 20 kN/m3 and 15 kN/m3, respectively. If the in-situ dry density of sand is found to
be 18.4 kN/m3, determine the relative density of sand and comment on the state of
compactness?
