Lo5 - 1
Lo5 - 1
I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson the students should be able to:
1. Enumerated the different types of Storage Devices and Storage Media.
2. Explained the different types of Storage Devices and Storage Media.
Materials: Laptop, PC, multimedia projector, any available Storage Devices, handouts
III. Procedure:
A. PRELIMINARY ACTIVITIES
A.1 Prayer
A.2 Greetings
A.3 Classroom management
A.4 Checking of attendance
A.5 Review of past lesson (The teacher will call student/s to recap the lesson.)
B. ACTIVITY
C. ANALYSIS
The teacher will collate the ideas of the students. Each of the student’s ideas will be connected through the following guide questions:
1. Where can you find or where did you find those devices?
2. Did you use it already?
3. How important are those devices nowadays? At home? At School?
D. ABSTRACTION
With the use of PowerPoint presentation, the teacher will discuss about the STORAGE DEVICES and STORAGE MEDIA.
OUTPUT DEVICES – is any piece of computer hardware equipment used to communicate the results of data processing carried out
by an information processing system (a computer) which converts the electronically generated information into human-readable form.
Storage devices are used to store data and instructions permanently. Storage devices are also called secondary storage devices /
backing storage devices / external storage devices or auxiliary storage devices.
- Alternatively referred to as digital storage, storage, storage media, or storage medium, a storage device is any hardware capable of
holding information either temporarily or permanently.
Primary Storage
• Also known as main memory.
• Main memory is directly or indirectly connected to the central processing unit via a memory bus.
• The CPU continuously reads instructions stored there and executes them as required.
•Example:
–RAM
–ROM
–Cache
Secondary Storage
• It is not directly accessible by the CPU.
• Computer usually uses its input/output channels to access secondary storage and transfers the desired data using intermediate area in
primary storage.
Example: Hard Disk (Internal/External)
Tertiary Storage
• Typically it involves a robotic mechanism which will mount (insert) and dismount removable mass storage media into a storage
device.
• It is a comprehensive computer storage system that is usually very slow, so it is usually used to archive data that is not accessed
frequently.
• This is primarily useful for extraordinarily large data stores, accessed without human operators.
Example:
- Magnetic Tape
- Optical Disk
Off-line Storage
• Also known as disconnected storage.
• Is a computer data storage on a medium or a device that is not under the control of a processing unit.
• It must be inserted or connected by a human operator before a computer can access it again.
Examples:
– Floppy Disk
– Zip diskette
– USB Flash drive
– Memory card
E. APPLICATION
IV - EVALUATION
1. Devices used to store data and instructions permanently, which are also called “Storage Media”? (Answer: Storage
Devices)
2. When computer is switched off, all data in ram is erased. True or False? (Answer: True)
3. What are the 3 main types of Storage Devices?
4. Answers: Magnetic Tape, Magnetic Disk
5. Optical Disk
6. A kind of disk which consists of one or more metal plates and also called “Fixed Disk”? (Answer: Hard Disk)
7. A kind of Disk which made of small plastic plate coated with magnetic material. Data is stored in magnetic spots.
(Answer: Floppy Disk)
8. LASER stands for? (Answer: Light Amplification through Emission of Radiation)
9. A kind of disk which has ability to write data on disk many times by erasing the old data. (Answer: CD-RW)
10. A disk which is similar to 3 ½ inch floppy disk. But it can store 100 MB or more data. Zip disk drive is used to read and
write data on a zip disk. (Answer: Zip Disk)
11. – 15. ) Why is storage needed in a computer? (Answer: Without a storage device, a computer cannot save or remember any
settings or information and would be considered a dumb terminal.)
