What is TradingView?
TradingView is a powerful and versatile online charting platform that has become a cornerstone for traders
and investors in the financial markets. Used by more than 15 million traders/investors worldwide, it serves
as a comprehensive companion for analyzing, charting, and trading various financial instruments.
TradingView offers an intuitive and user-friendly interface, making it accessible to both beginners and
experienced traders.
A - Left Toolbar: Drawing Tools (Cursors, Line Tools, Gann & Fibonacci Tools, Brush & Shapes,
Text & Markers, Patterns/Waves & Cycles, Projection tools, Icons, Measurement Tool, Zoom
in, Magnet Mode, Drawing Mode, Lock Function, Hide Function, & Remove (Trash) Function)
You can choose amongst the many options from this feature list and then apply such tools directly
to your chart screen (Main Display) in the center. You can edit, undo, redo, or delete whatever you
place on the chart screen by highlighting the object first and then choosing the amendment you
wish to conduct on the object chosen.
A small options bar will appear when a drawing tool is highlighted. This bar will allow you to fine-
tune details about the tool being used.
B - Top Toolbar: Stock Code, Data Period, Chart Type, Compare, Indicators, Templates, Undo/Redo,
Panels, Saving, Settings, Max/Min Screen, Screenshot
These functions allow you to choose stocks and render the desired output on your chart screen, such as
changing the time frames, chart type or adding indicators to help you assess the trend state of the security
you are viewing.
You can also compare several securities or have them placed in different chart panels using the options
from the toolbar. To choose or change a security from within a panel, first highlight the panel you wish to
alter, then move along to edit or change the code of the security inside that panel.
The settings icon can also be used to customize certain defaults in the systems and its appearance. For now,
though, a white background chart is defaulted. We will soon provide a way to look at charts in dark mode.
C - Right Panel: Watchlist and Quick Quote Section
You can add a security by clicking on the (+) sign beside the Watchlist
header, and then choosing the security by typing its name or code into
the search security field. To remove a listed security, highlight one then
click on the presented (-) sign to its right to remove it. You can drag and
drop from amongst a list of securities to change its position on a list.
You can also click on a column header to sort the list using that tag. For
now, a single watchlist can be created. But we will soon increase the
number of watchlists that can be made.
At the bottom of the frame, a quick quote of the security chosen will
appear to provide dept to the security in question.
D - Main Display: Chart/Drawing Screen
This chart/drawing screen is where chart data and indicators are shown. It can be viewed as an active
blackboard where annotations can be made directly, or even altered and removed. Click on the Left Toolbar
to choose an option to draw or call out. Then use it on the chart/drawing screen. Any annotations made on
this screen will be saved for later viewing or can be saved into a designed layout.
To edit or remove an annotation or drawing tool, highlight it with your cursor with a left click, then either
press DELETE to remove or click on any of the desired options presented in the small menu box that will
appear when you left-click on it. Two or more dots should appear around your chosen tool to highlight its
active state.
TradingView has a lot of options and can really be best enjoyed after trying it out for yourself. Go ahead
and explore the many other features and options that this application has to offer.
There are many videos on YouTube that give good descriptions on how to best use and take advantage of
TradingView. (A sample video can be watched here.) Please explore them as they may provide more insight
into its flexibility and power. Keep in mind that we are using the TradingView Charts – and that other
specialty features such as its social media, screener, and backtesting components are not (yet) included.
