Lesson 1.

1: Importance of Art Appreciation and Its relevance to Philosophy

Art - is derived from Latin word “ars” meaning ability or skill.


Philosophy - comes from the Greek words; philo- meaning “love”, and sophia which means
“wisdom”, and it literally defined as “the love of wisdom”

Humanities and its definition
Humanities is derived from the Latin word humanus, which means human, refined, and
cultured. The humanities are the studies about human culture, such as literature, philosophy,
visual arts, and history.
The importance of humanities
• The fields of knowledge and study falling under humanities are dedicated to the pursuit of discovering
and understanding the nature of man.

• The humanities deal with man as a being of purpose, values, loves, hates, ideas and sometimes as a
seer, or prophet with divine inspiration.

• The humanities aim at educating and generally emphasized individual expressiveness in dramatized.

ART APPRECIATION
Art appreciation helps open up the mindset of the people, by listening to different perspectives
and views as well as interpretations of the art, it encourages thoughtful conversation and the
understanding that there is more than one approach to everything.
Purpose of art appreciation
Art appreciation encompasses so much more than just looking at a piece of art or learning
about the artist.

Lesson 1.2: ART HISTORY


Art history, also called art historiography, is the historical study of the visual arts, being
concerned with identifying, classifying, describing, evaluating, interpreting and understanding
the art products and historic development of the fields of painting, sculpture, architecture, the
decorative arts, drawing, printmaking, photography, etc.
Cave Paintings
Cave paintings are also known as “parietal art.” They are painted drawings on cave walls or
ceilings, mainly of prehistoric origin, dated to some 40,000 years ago (38,000 BCE) in Eurasia.
The exact purpose of the Paleolithic cave paintings in not known.
There are two paintings which believed that the earliest figurative paintings found in Europe.
The earliest figurative paintings in Europe date back to the Aurignacian period, approximately
30,000 to 32,000 years ago, and are found in the Chauvet Cave in France, and in the Coliboaia
Cave in Romania.
Cave Paintings seen in Asia, Europe, North and South America
The Padah-Lin Caves of Burma contain 11,000 year old paintings and many rock tools. In the
Philippines at Tabon Caves the oldest artwork may be a relief of shark above the cave entrance.
Lesson 1.3: CREATIVITY VS. IMAGINATION
Know that…….

• It takes an artist to make art. One may perceive beauty on a daily basis.

• However, not every beautiful thing that can be seen or experienced may truly be called a work of art.

• Not everyone can be considered an artist, but all are spectators of art.

• Art is a product of man’s creativity, imagination, and expression.

Creativity vs. Imagination


CREATIVITY is doing something meaningful with your imagination. It allows us to do something
meaningful with our imaginations.

IMAGINATION is thinking of something - whether it is an object, place, time, etc., that is not present. It
allows us to think of things that are not real or around us at any given time.
