MeasureofCenterNotes 1

The document defines and provides examples for key statistical terms: 1) Mean, median and mode are used to measure center - the mean is the average, median is the middle value, and mode is the most frequent value. 2) Range is the difference between the highest and lowest values in a data set. 3) An outlier is a value far outside the rest of the data, and can skew the results of analyses if not addressed.

Mean, Median, Mode, Range, and Outliers Notes

MEAN
Definition: The mean is calculated by ____________ up all of the numerical values and
__________________ by the total number of values. It is a way to measure
center.
Example 1: Find the mean from the following data. Data: 8, 5, 4, 3, 12, 5, 2, 1

Example 2: Find the mean height in inches of the following student heights.
68, 61, 56, 54, 58, 60, 61, 62

When might it be useful to find the mean of a set of data?

MEDIAN
Definition:
The median is the __________________ value of a set of ___________ numerical
values. It is a way to measure center.

** If there is an even number of values in a data set, the median is the mean
of the two middle values!**

Example 1: Find the median from the following data. Data: 8, 5, 4, 3, 12, 5, 2, 1

Step 1: Order the numbers from least to greatest: __________________________

Step 2: Determine the middle value of the set of data: _____________________

Example 2: Find the median of the following student quiz scores.

72, 85, 99, 76, 88, 61, 81

For some data sets it is better to use the median instead of the mean. Why is this true?

MODE
Definition:
The mode is the number that appears the _______________________ in a
numerical set of data. It is a way to measure center.

**There may be no mode, one mode, or more than one mode!**

Example 1: Identify the number that appears the most. 8, 5, 4, 3, 12, 5, 2, 1

Example 2: Find the mode of the number of pieces of Halloween candy collected by
the class. 65, 100, 30, 48, 100, 65, 58, 20, 46, 88, 71, 17, 55, 45, 40

When might you find the mode of a set of data?

RANGE
Definition:
The range is the _________________________ between the highest and lowest
values of a numerical data set.

Example 1: Identify the range from the following data. 8, 5, 4, 3, 12, 5, 2, 1

Example 2: Find the range of the number of pieces of Halloween candy collected by
the class. 65, 100, 30, 48, 100, 65, 58, 20, 46, 88, 71, 17, 55, 45, 40

OUTLIER
Definition:
The outlier is a value that lies ________________________ of the other data
values.

**Usually the presence of an outlier represents some sort of problem**

Example 1: Identify any points that maybe considered an outlier: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5, 8, 9, 78

What does an outlier do to a set of data?
