Tutorial 4: Vector Calculus, Maxwell’s Equation and EM Waves

1. Let F⃗1 = x2 k̂ and F⃗2 = (x2 − y 2 + x)î − (2xy + y)ĵ.

(a) Calculate the divergence and curl of F⃗1 and F⃗2 .

(b) Which one can be written as the gradient of a scalar? Find a scalar potential that does
the job.
(c) Which one can be written as the curl of a vector? Find a suitable vector potential.

2. Use the Divergence Theorem to evaluate
and S is the surface of the solid bounded by z = 6 − 2x2 − 2y 2 and the z = 0 plane as shown
in Figure 1. Note that both of the surfaces of this solid is included in S.

Figure 1:

3. Consider the vector ⃗v = (2xz + 3y 2 )ŷ + (4yz 2 )ẑ and prove the Stoke’s theorem for the surface
shown in Figure 2. Consider the direction of dS ⃗ to be the direction of positive x-axis.

Figure 2:
4. Find the directional derivative or gradient of ϕ = x2 y 2 z 2 at the point (1, 1, −1) in direction of
the tangent to the curve x = et , y = sin 2t − 1, z = 1 − cos t at t = 0.

5. Electric and magnetic field in a region is given by

⃗ = E0 cos ω t − z î
h i
E

h z i
B = B0 cos ω t − ĵ

Calculate divergence and curl of E ⃗ and B ⃗ in the region and predict the charge and current
density in the region.

6. Consider an EM wave is incident on the boundary of two different mediums with refractive
indices n1 and n2 respectively (say n1 < n2 ) at an angle θI and some part of the wave is
reflected from the boundary making an angle θR and rest transmitted in the second medium
making a refractive angle θT . Now establish Snell’s laws in this case using boundary conditions.

7. (a) An EM wave is propagating in a dielectric medium and the electric field is given by

⃗ = E0 (x̂ + Aẑ)eik0 [−ct+(x+ 3z)] . Calculate the dielectric constant of the medium and the
E
value of A.
(b) An EM wave is incident in air from a dielectric medium of ϵr = 4 and µr = 1. The

⃗ = H0 cos[ωt − k0 (x + 3z)]ŷ. Find
magnetic field of dielectric medium is given by, H
out the angle of reflection and refraction.
