Roles and Functions of Social Workers
- Social work is an active profession with
responsibilities in caring, curing, and changing.
- Roles and functions of social workers are varied.
- Interventive roles: Combination of tasks to
accomplish goals with clients.
- Summarized interventive roles: Resource broker,
social broker, mediator, advocate, enabler, and
counselor/therapist.
Role: Resource Broker
- Description: Direct provision of material aid and
resources to reduce situational deficiencies.
- Resources are mobilized, created, or directly
provided to the client being assisted.
Role: Social Broker
- Description: Process of negotiating the "service
jungle" for clients.
- Links clients to needed services and ensures
quick delivery.
- Involves networking with other community
entities to gain support and additional resources.
Role: Mediator
- Description: Acts as an intermediary or
conciliator between persons or groups.
- Resolves disputes between the client and other
parties.
- Facilitates finding common ground to resolve the
dispute.
Role: Enabler
- Description: Takes a partisan interest in the
client's cause.
- Aims to influence another party in the interest
of the client.
- Engages in arguing, bargaining, negotiating, and
manipulating the environment on behalf of the
client.
Role: Counselor/Therapist
- Description: Restores, maintains, or enhances
the client's capacity to adapt.
- Provides necessary services for emotional
support and adjustment.
- Involves purposive listening, reassurance,
teaching, guidance, and logical discussions.
Roles Beyond Direct Practice
1. Mobilizer of Community Elite
- Informs and interprets programs and services to the community.
- Gains support, commitment, and involvement from professionals,
politicians, community leaders, and volunteers.
2. Documenter/Social Critique
- Documents the need for sufficient policies and programs.
- Based on knowledge and experiences about inadequacies in existing
policies and programs.
3. Policy/Program Change Advocate
- Efforts to change policies and programs based on professional values.
- Takes a stand on important issues and defends proposals affecting a
client population.
