Activity - Stat and Probability

1. The document contains a multi-part worksheet on classifying random variables as discrete or continuous, determining if a distribution is a probability distribution of a discrete random variable, solving problems involving a discrete probability distribution, calculating z-scores from means and standard deviations, and finding probabilities using a standard normal table. 2. Part I requires classifying 10 random variables as discrete or continuous. Part II determines if a distribution is a probability distribution of a discrete random variable by writing Yes or No. Part III provides a discrete probability distribution. 3. Part IV involves calculating 7 z-scores using given means, standard deviations, and values. Part V instructs the student to find probabilities using the standard normal table.

Part I - Classify each random variable as either Discrete or Continuous.

______________1. The number of boys in a randomly selected three-child family.

______________2. The temperature of a cup of coffee served at a restaurant.
______________3. The number of no-shows for every 100100 reservations made with a commercial
airline.
______________4. The number of vehicles owned by a randomly selected household.
______________5. The average amount spent on electricity each July by a randomly selected
household in a certain state.
______________6. The number of new cases of influenza in a particular county in a coming month.
______________7. The air pressure of a tire on an automobile.
______________8. The amount of rain recorded at an airport one day.
______________9. The number of students who actually register for classes at a university next
semester.
______________10. The number of hearts in a five-card hand drawn from a deck of 5252 cards that
contains 1313 hearts in all.

Part II - Determine whether the distribution is a probability distribution of a discrete random variable. Write Yes or No and
Explain Why

Part III - A discrete random variable x has the following probability distribution.
Part IV – Solve the following:
1. The grades on a history midterm at Almond have a mean of 74 and a standard deviation of Michael
scored 6 on the exam. Find the z-score for Michael's exam grade with 98.
2. The grades on a geometry midterm at Oak have a mean of 85.5 and a standard deviation of 4.2. Nadia
scored 82 on the exam what is the z – score?
3. Suppose a population was normally distributed with a mean of 10 and standard deviation of 2. What
proportion of the scores are below 12.5?
4. Let’s say that the average IQ of a group of people is 105 with a standard deviation of 15. What is the z- score
of someone with an IQ of 93?
5. The grades on a biology exam were roughly normally distributed with an average of 76 and standard deviation
of 4. Lauren scored a 63 on the exam. Find the z-score for Lauren's exam grade.
6. Women's heights have a mean of 63.6 in. and a standard deviation of 2.5 inches. Find the z score
corresponding to a woman with a height of 70 inches.
7. A patient recently diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease takes a cognitive abilities test and scores a 35. The mean
on this test is 52 and the standard deviation is 5. What is the patient's z-score?
Part V – Find the Probability using the standard normal table.
