Narrative Writing Task Prompt: “Popular Mechanics” is told from the perspective of a narrator.
Rewrite the story, telling it from another person’s perspective. (Hint: You can choose the man,
the woman, or the baby) Think about how they would tell the story and write it below.
What will stay the same between the “Popular Mechanics” and new story?

Directions: Read & Annotate the teacher’s exemplar. What do you notice about the new story?
In the bedroom, a flurry of activity was happening. I saw him pushing clothes into a suitcase, and then she
appeared at the door. Her words were loud and filled with emotion, "I’m glad you’re leaving! I’m glad
you’re leaving!" I couldn't understand the reasons, but the tension was palpable. He continued packing,
seemingly unfazed by her words.
As she cried, I noticed her eyes fixating on my picture on the bed. Something was happening, something
that would alter everything. Words were exchanged, and the next thing I knew, she was holding me
tightly. He insisted on taking me away, and a struggle ensued. I couldn't comprehend the intensity of their
emotions, but it felt like a storm was raging around me.
Amidst the chaos, they knocked down a flowerpot, and I found myself at the center of a tug-of-war. I was
crying, and she was screaming, a symphony of confusion. Darkness surrounded us as they fought, and in
that near-darkness, he pried her fingers open, and I slipped away from her grasp.
She wouldn't let go, though. Desperation filled the air as she grabbed for my other arm. But he was
resolute, and I felt myself being pulled in different directions. The struggle intensified until, with a forceful
tug, the issue was decided. I was no longer in her arms.
In that moment, my world changed forever. I didn't understand the complexities of their adult world, but
the echoes of that struggle lingered, marking the beginning of a new chapter.
