What I Need to Know

In this lesson you will be able to:

a. identify the Major Triad or Major Chords and
b. locate the Primary Chords.

What’s In

Harmony in music is the sound produced from the combination of two or

more notes of different pitches played simultaneously. It gives more depth
and color to a musical arrangement. These 2 or more notes that are played
simultaneously are called Chords. The basic chord is called Triad which is
composed of the root, third (3rd interval note), and the fifth (5th interval
note).

The Primary Chords

These are the family chord. They are most likely to occur in a given key. The
primary chords are the triads built from the root note, 4th and 5th degree of a
scale. These are Major Triads or Major Chords.

To find the Primary chords of any key signature, locate the 1st, 4th, and the
5th degree in the scale and make a triad out of it.

In the Key of C Major, the primary chords are C major (1st), F major (4th),
and G major (5th).

These chords are also referred to as Tonic chord (C major), Sub-dominant

chord (F major), and Dominant chord (G major).

The major chord creates a feeling of brightness and happiness that greatly
affects the mood of a person.

What I Have Learned

Harmony is the sound created by combining 2 or more notes of different

pitches played at the same time. These 2 or more notes are called chords and
the basic chords are called triads. There are 3 Major chords in a Key signature
which are built in the 1st, 4th, and 5th degree of the scale.
