Answer ALL questions.

QUESTION 1 (20 Marks)

State whether the following statements are True or False. Write down the question number and the word True
or False next to it. E.g. 1.11 True

1.1. In a data set, standard deviation and range are measures of dispersion.
1.2. Primary data has a short access time.
1.3. The most passive data collection method is observation.
1.4. The linear regression line for a set of data is given as 𝑦=2.5−1.8𝑥. It thus follows that there is a direct
relationship between 𝑥 and 𝑦.
1.5. The outcome of a patient’s blood type test is an example of a binomial experiment.
1.6. Approximately 95% of the area below the normal distribution curve lies between 𝑧=−3 and 𝑧=+3.
1.7. The volume of water consumed by an athlete during the Comrades Marathon is quantitative and continuous.
1.8. There are three quartiles in a data set.
1.9 A correlation coefficient of +1 means perfect positive linear correlation.
1.10 Secondary data is data already in existence.

QUESTION 2 (20 Marks)

The mass (in grams) for 15 samples of gold is given below.

9 1 5 11 9 4 6 15 14 7 2 8 2
14 8

2.1. Using the raw data, determine the range. (2 marks)

2.2. Group the data into a frequency distribution with a lowest class lower limit of 1 gram and a class width of 3
gram. (5 marks)

2.3. Determine the mean using the raw data. (3 marks)

2.4. Draw an OGIVE curve corresponding to the data and use it to estimate the median. (10 marks)

QUESTION 3 (25 Marks)

Optimal systolic blood pressure is between 120 - 130 mmHg. The systolic blood pressures (in mmHg) of 30 patients at a
hospital was measured and recorded in the grouped frequency distribution in Table 3.1 below.

Blood Pressure (mmHg) Number of patients

100 < 110 3
110 < 120 7
120 < 130 12
130 < 140 4
140 < 150 2
150 < 160 1
160 < 170 1
Table 3.1

3.1. Determine the:

3.1.1. mean blood pressure of these 30 patients. (10 marks)

3.1.2. modal blood pressure of these 30 patients. (4 marks)

3.2. Determine the standard deviation. (11 marks)

QUESTION 4 (15 Marks)

4.1. The Food and Drug Administration approves 20% of drugs submitted for its approval. Find the probability that in
a sample of 15 drugs submitted for the FDA’s approval, the number of drugs that are approved is:

4.1.1. exactly 4. (3 marks)

4.1.2. at most 2. (7 marks)

4.2. A racing car is one of the many toys manufactured by Mack Corporation. The assembly time for this toy follows
a normal distribution with a mean of 55 minutes and a standard deviation of 4 minutes. The company closes at
5pm every day. If one worker starts assembling a racing car at 4 pm, what is the probability that she will finish
this job before the company closes for the day? (5 marks)
