DIFFERENT TYPES OF
COMPUTERS
Do you remember that we discussed the
different types of computers in grade 10 and 11?
COMPUTER TYPE FUNCTION
Server A server is a computer program or device that provides a
service to another computer program and its user, also known
as the client.
Workstation High-performance computer system - basically designed for a
single user. Has advanced graphics capabilities, large storage
capacity, and a powerful central processing unit. More
capable than a personal computer (PC) and less advanced
than a server (which can manage a large network
of peripheral PCs or workstations and handle immense data-
processing and reporting tasks).
Personal computers General-purpose, cost-effective computer that is designed to
(microcomputers) be used by single end-user. Every PC is dependent on
Desktop microprocessor technology, which allows PC makers to set
the entire central processing unit (CPU) on a single chip.
COMPUTER TYPE FUNCTION
Embedded systems Embedded computers are everywhere. They are in phones,
microwaves, airplanes, automobiles, calculators … The list goes
on and on. Integral component of most embedded systems, is
a combination of hardware and software that is designated to
perform a highly specific function. For example, the type of
embedded computer in a washing machine will not be the
same as the embedded computer in a Nikon camera. Because
the software in embedded computers is designed to only
execute certain tasks, the computer’s software in one device
can be totally distinct from that of another.
COMPUTER TYPE FUNCTION
Tablets Mobile computing device designed to be held in one or two
hands. Approximately size of a hardcover book. Early tablet
devices used light pens or a stylus as their input device. Today
all tablets use a touch screen as their primary input device with
the option to connect external devices, such as a keyboard.
Most tablets only have a few physical buttons; the back, power,
and volume buttons. Everything else can be done using your
fingers. top two operating systems used with tablets is Apple
iOS used with iPads and Google Android used with Android
tablets.
Smartphone A cellular telephone - integrated computer and other features
not originally associated with telephones such as an operating
system, web browsing, ability to run software applications.
POWER COMPUTER USER

A power user is a user of

computers, software and
other electronic devices, who
uses advanced features of
computer hardware,
operating systems, programs,
or websites which are not
used by the average user.
SOHO USER

SOHO stands for Small

Office/Home Office.
Refers to small office and
home office environ-
ments, which typically
employ 1 – 10 employees.
