Ashoka University Internship Credit Policy

• Ashoka students may earn credits through internships after they have
completed at least two semesters full-time at the University.

• At least two internship credits are mandatory in the new four-year programme
introduced in 2022.

• While they may earn any number of such credits during their tenure as
undergraduates, up to four credits will count towards satisfying degree
requirements. The credits that are counted towards the degree will be shown on
the transcript along with other courses, whereas additional internship credits
which are not counted towards the degree – whether academic or non-academic
– will be shown in a separate certificate issued by the OAA.

• An internship credit can reflect (i) work done under the direct supervision of an
Ashoka faculty member, to whom the student will report, or (ii) work done
elsewhere but evaluated by an Ashoka faculty member using a well-defined
evaluation scheme. Such work could be, for example, for a teaching
assistantship, an independent study module, or a project during the winter or
summer break. Such internship credits will in general earn a letter grade, i.e. A,
B, etc, unless decided otherwise by the supervisor, in which case it will be
marked pass/fail. Such credits can be earned towards a major, a minor, or to
fulfill general academic credit requirements.

• Internship credits can also reflect work done outside the supervision of Ashoka
faculty members, e.g. in industry, the corporate sector, NGOs, local
government, panchayats, or with craftsmen, artists, etc. Such credits will in
general earn a pass/fail grade. A student wishing to earn such credits will be
required to report either to an Ashoka faculty member or to an Office or Centre
of Ashoka University, e.g. the Career Development Office (CDO).

• Students wishing to earn credits through internships will be required to register

in advance on the AMS, with appropriate details. The details will include the
expected duration of the internship, the category (academic or non-academic),
the faculty member, office, or centre responsible.

• For internships done under the supervision of Ashoka faculty members, or

evaluated by Ashoka faculty members, the grades will be the responsibility of
the faculty member(s) concerned. For internships done through an office or
centre, the grades will uploaded by the Office of Academic Affairs (OAA).
Internship grades will normally be uploaded at the end of the regular Ashoka
term (summer, monsoon, spring) that follows the completion of the internship.
• An internship that is registered on the AMS but not begun or completed will be
erased from the record.

• The UGC has defined one internship credit as requiring 2 hours a week for 15
weeks, i.e. a total of 30 hours. This requires an appropriate conversion for
projects done during the summer or winter breaks; this is left to the discretion
of the reporting authority for a project. We recommend a conversion of four
weeks of full-time work during the winter break to 2 credits, eight weeks of full-
time work during the summer break to 4 credits, and half-time work during the
monsoon or spring semester to 4 credits.

• Internship credits earned during the semester will be subject to the same limits
on other credits specified in the policy on maximum credits in a semester.

• Internships may be paid and yet earn credits.
