Chapter I

The Problem and Background of the Study

Sports participation and academic performance of student-athletes can have both

positive and negative effects on Academic Performance. While Involvement in sports

can provide numerous benefits such as improved physical health, social development,

and time management skills. Critics observed that participation in sports may reduce the

time available for studying and learning, since students-athletes were having difficulties

in managing their time between hectic schedules of sports training and requirements of

academic subjects. However, sports enthusiasts claimed that sports participation can

motivate student-athletes to achieve harder, raise scholastic ambition, can keep them

attending school, can improve students’ academic grades, develop awareness the

benefits of good health, fitness and exercise, and understanding the spirit of team work,

sportsmanship and camaraderie.

There is a growing people who hold on to an assertion that students who

engage in sports activities do not perform well academically among researchers on the

effects of students’ engagement in sports and academic performance. Trudeau, &

Shephard (2008). Identified that engagement in sports have positive influence on

students’ academic performance. Tremblay, Inman and Williams (2000) revealed that

partaking in sports have negative effects on students’ academic performance. These

critics claim that students who participate in sports relinquish all their energies into

training and partaking

in sporting activities and have less time and energy to dedicate to their academic work.

Hartman (2008) asserted that “too much periods and energy emphasized on sports

shifted focus from academic work of schools”.

Due to over participation in sports activities there is possibilities that the

Academic performance of students athlete will be effected. Engaging in sports activities

to an excessive extent may lead to a decline in academic performance for student-

athletes. This is primarily due to the fact that they need to allocate significant time and

energy towards their sports commitments, which can result in reduced focus and effort

on their studies. There is a possibility that the Student athlete's lack of time

management skills will have an impact on his academic performance.

This study aim to investigate the problem of student-athletes excessive sports

activity impacting their academic performance and how they might manage being

student athletes without compromising their academic performance. Also, to

comprehend what actions they ought to take in this circumstance. So the researchers

will conducted a survey formal interview to respondents using a survey method

questionnaire in Parang National High School Campus to ask among student athletes

on what they ought to do to maintain their academic standing while participating in

sports activities.

Theoretical Framework

This study is anchored on the theory of Social Cognitive by Albert Bandura. This Theory

explained that Sports participation among students has long been recognized for its

potential impact on various aspects of their lives, including academic performance.

While some studies suggest a positive correlation between sports involvement and

academic success, others propose potential trades or conflicting outcomes. This

research seeks to delve deeper into this complex relationship by applying Social

Cognitive Theory as a framework to understand the mechanisms through which sports

participation may influence academic performance among student athletes. It may

inform educational stakeholders and practitioners in designing interventions and support

mechanisms that promote holistic development and well-being among student athletes

at Parang National High School.

Statement of the Problem

This research determined the effects of Sports Participation on Academic Performance

of Student Athlete in Parang National High School.

The researchers sought the following:

1. What actions may you take as a student athlete that won't have an impact on

your grades?

2. In order to balance training and schoolwork, how can you effectively manage

your time?

3. Is lack of motivation in completing tasks and projects due to overtraining and

exhaustion? Why?

Scope and Limitation

Definition of Terms

Sport participation - a sport practiced in free time, i.e. active participation of the

student athlete in various sports, including exercises, competitions and other sporting

events as a means of physical and personal development.

Student-Athlete - A student who participates in an activity or athletic activity that not

only divides time from academics, but also engages in athletic activities and balances

both academic and athletic responsibilities.

Academic Performance - Student achievement or success is typically measured by

their academic performance, including grades, test scores, attendance, and overall

academic performance.

Review of Related Literature and Studies

This chapter provides a review of related literature and studies both foreign and

local to broaden the information of researchers about this study. It contains the

connections to the other works of literature and studies conducted by other authors

which deal with the effects of sports participation on academic performance of student

athletes.

Foreign Literature

Athletics have come to play a major role in the life of high schools and universities

across the U.S. today (Griffith, 2004; Hamilton, 2005; Knox, 2007; Mock,2003; Tublitz,

2007). For several generations, athletics and education have been identified with each

other, with the result that sports culture has become embedded within academic culture

on many levels. Traditionally, participation in sports was said to make boys into men

and help them appreciate teamwork, duty, sacrifice and dedication. The promotion of

sports as a path toward maturity was supported by studies that have found that

“participation in extracurricular activities….affect academic performance, attachment to

school and social development” among high school students (NHSAW, 2001, p. 9).

Participation in sports and related physical education activities “provide opportunities for

students to learn the values of teamwork…and the opportunity to apply academic skills

in other arenas as part of a well-rounded education” (NHSAW, p. 9). s. Many of the

athletes chose to attend their graduation, mainly on the grounds that it is a once-only

event and that they wanted to

Share this moment with parents and friends (Clark, 2002). Nonetheless, the

administration of the university recommended that the student-athletes compete at the

meet, and miss graduation. The fact that the school would put student-athletes in the

position of having to make such a choice indicates how wrong-headed current policy

has become vis-à-vis the relationships between sports and academics.

Foreign Studies

Students’ participation in physical activity within the school setting can take a

variety of forms, with a broad classification outlining three major types: (a) physical

education classes, (b) school sports, and (c) free-time activity (Centers for Disease

Control and Prevention, 2013). Also, According to (Pate et al., 2006), Preponderance of

evidence regarding the ability of school-based physical activity to enhance academic

achievement comes from experimental and no experimental designs examining either

physical education or specialized physical-activity interventions. Academic achievement

has long been of interest to social workers concerned with child development, and

research has consistently found that physical activity regardless of type can promote

children’s academic outcomes. One key causal mechanism underpinning the

relationship between physical activity and academics is a direct, physiological link

between activity and cognition. Also, According to (Hillman et al., 2008). Evidence from

the biological and neurological sciences suggests that physical activity activates the

allocation of cognitive resources and promotes faster cognitive processing through

stimulus encoding. This is despite promising evidence that school sports may promote

both physical activity and

student academic outcomes due to important social contexts, increased involvement

with school resources, and identification with school values (Marsh & Kleitman, 2003;

Trudeau & Shephard, 2008).

Local Literature

The relationship between participation in sports and academic achievement is

examined by exploring both the factors that predict participation in different sports and

the influence that participation in specific sports has on academic achievement (Eitle,

2002). The motivation to participate in youth sport involves a relationship between the

athlete, coach, and athletic environment. An athlete with high self-perceived ability to

perform a skill is motivated to participate. Performance-contingent feedback from a

coach who encourages an athlete's autonomous growth can create such perceptions,

which can also be supported through enjoyable challenges that match equipment with

skill. Athletic participation may also positively influence morals if the experience is

interpersonal, participants are interdependent, and there exists an opportunity for

dialogue and negotiation. Studies also show that athletic participation, when combined

with school service and leadership activities, can increase academic achievement

(Chambers, 2001).

Local Studies

To identify the effect of sports participation, Tremblay et al. (2000) discovered that

a negative relationship existed between sports participation and standardized test

scores among students. It was espoused by Davis and Cooper (2011) that people who

partake

in sporting activities in schools argue that there exist no positive effects of sports on

academic performance. Thorlindson and Bernburg (2006) observed that some parents

associate sports with some ill-mannered behaviors. People who question the place of

sports in educational institutions, claim that sports participation results in poor

performance by sportsmen and sportswomen. These critics claim that students who

participate in sports relinquish all their energies into training and partaking in sporting

activities and have less time and energy to dedicate to their academic work. Hartman

(2008) asserted that “too much periods and energy emphasized on sports shifted focus

from academic work of schools”. Hartman investigated quite a number of researches

done to ascertain the kind of relationship that exists between athletic participation and

students’ academic achievements.

Synthesis of the Study

Participating in sports can positively impact academic performance through the

development of skills like time management, discipline, and teamwork, as well as

through the social support networks and sense of belonging within athletic teams.

Additionally, physical activity has cognitive benefits that may enhance learning.

However, conflicting findings exist, with some studies suggesting potential negative

effects due to factors such as time commitment, exhaustion, and academic pressure.

Disparities in academic support for student-athletes compared to non-athletes may

exacerbate these challenges. Further research is needed to understand this complex

relationship and inform strategies to optimize both athletic and academic success.
