Safety Precautions
It is necessary to reduce risks during the design and development processes of machine safety in order to create a safe
machine. This document explains safety control circuits, which are implemented as a part of the protective measures in the
machine safety design process. Conduct a risk assessment before starting the design of a safety control circuit.

Chapter 1 GC Series Overview and Features

Overview

The GC Series is a safety controller designed for intuitive use and high level safety performance.

The GC Series offers two main controllers: the GC-1000 which can be extended using the expansion units and remote I/O modules and also features
Ethernet communication functionality, and the GC-1000R which is equipped with a built-in safety relay output. The GC-1000 supports up to 212 safety
inputs and 46 safety outputs with one main controller, allowing flexible building of a system according to the scale of the machine.
Additionally, complex safety controls can be developed by combining a variety of function blocks according to the desired application when using the
dedicated software, GC Configurator.

control circuits, Standard mode is used to build more complex
safety control circuits or safety control circuits tailored to your
machine. Click [Cnvt. to std. mode] to convert a circuit from
EASY mode to Standard mode. This is useful for customizing
basic circuits created in EASY mode.

23
Extra 1 Maintenance Function

The maintenance function can temporarily disable a signal from a safety input device when specific conditions are met. This means that during
system maintenance you can, for example, use an operating mode for running the system at low speed or that permits inching motion upon
temporarily canceling the inputs from safety light curtains and safety door sensors. Switching to maintenance mode will temporarily cancel the
signals from the safety input devices pre-registered to be canceled for maintenance. After maintenance is finished, use the mode switch to switch to
Normal mode for standard operation.

When using the maintenance function, conduct a thorough risk assessment in maintenance mode and implement additional safeguards as
needed.

From the device list, select [Option] -

drop it to register it in the application.

3 Select the input devices to disable.

Click [Go to selection mode] and select the input devices

to disable.

Devices that can be selected to be disabled are displayed in pink.

Click the block of the input that you want to disable.

When an input device is selected to be disabled, the right edge of the input block
changes to an indication that shows that it is disabled.

In the example above, the GS00 safety door sensor and GLR00 safety light curtain are selected to be
disabled. In Normal mode, when the GS00 or GLR00 turns off, the safety output turns off to stop the
system. However, in Maintenance mode, even if the GS00 or GLR00 is OFF, the system can continue to
run while the enabling device is ON. After selecting the input devices to disable, click [Go to selection
mode] again to confirm the setup.

To ensure safety, do not disable any emergency stop function (e.g. emergency stop switch or rope switch).

If the input device to be used for the maintenance

function is not registered, add a new device from the 2
[Disablement method settings window] (Page 24).
Because terminals are not assigned to newly added input
devices, you must assign terminals on the Detailed
settings screen, which can be accessed by right-clicking
the device and then selecting [Detailed settings].

GC controller.

1. Turn OFF the door sensor (GS00) that is disabled with the
maintenance function. (Supposing that the door was opened for
maintenance)

2. When the enabling device (ESW00) is turned ON, the safety

output (S-OUT) turns ON. Safety output (S-OUT) stays ON only
while the enabling device (ESW00) is ON.
Turn the enabling
device (ESW00) ON.

Devices that are disabled are indicated by a mark on the right side of their respective input blocks.

Extra 3 History Function

The GC Series records the states before and after a change to the function block or signal status of an I/O device occurs.
The GC Configurator can be used to quickly identify the cause in case of a problem.

About the History Function

The GC Series is equipped with two types of history functions: Fulltime history, which is stored in the volatile memory, and Event history,
which is stored in the non-volatile memory where the history remains even after the GC Series unit’s power has been turned off.

Full-time histories Event histories

The states at the timing when the I/O device signal and function The event history is stored in the system memory (non-volatile
block change from ON to OFF or OFF to ON are automatically memory) attached to the GC Series unit and is not erased even
stored in the volatile memory of the GC Series unit. Without any when the power to the GC Series unit is shut off. Therefore, even
special settings required, the states of the change timing of all when the GC Series unit is turned off by a power restart of the
blocks can be stored. system as a result of a problem, the event history remains.

Event histories are saved at the following timings:

1. T
he states before and after the S-OUT block turned OFF are recorded when the S-OUT block remains OFF for 90 consecutive
seconds.
2. The states before and after the timing when the event history trigger function block* is executed are recorded.
* The event history trigger function block cannot be used in EASY mode. For details, see the GC Series User’s Manual.
