Introduction to

Statically
Indeterminate
Structures
Instructor: Dr. Redzuan Abdullah
Student Objectives and Outline

• Know the advantages and disadvantages of statically

indeterminate structures, as compared to statically
determinate structures
• Understand why the analysis of statically
indeterminate structures is harder than the analysis of
statically determinate structures
• Know various methods of analysing statically
indeterminate structures

2
Advantages of Indeterminate Structures

• Statically indeterminate structures generally develop

lower maximum stresses and deform less than
comparable statically determinate structures

3
• Statically indeterminate structures often have
redundancies
• Statically indeterminate structure has a tendency to
redistribute its load to its redundant supports in cases of
faulty designs or overloading. i.e. If a part in an
indeterminate structure fails, the structure may still be
stable

4
• Support settlements may cause stresses in statically
indeterminate structures, unlike in statically determinate
structures
• If a support moves, it may cause a member to bend

5
• Temperature changes and fabrication errors may
cause stresses in statically indeterminate structures
• In a determinate structure, the members are free to
elongate or contract slightly

6
Disadvantages of Indeterminate Structures

• Although statically indeterminate structure can support

loading with thinner members & with increased stability
compared to their statically determinate counterpart,
the cost savings in the material must be compared with
the added cost to fabricate the structure since, often it
becomes more costly to construct the supports & joints
of an indeterminate structure.

7
Methods of Analysis

• Methods of analysing indeterminate structures are

broadly classified as either force (flexibility) methods
or displacement (stiffness) methods
• Force methods are useful for dealing with small
structures and fewer redundant
• Displacement methods may be used to analyse large
structures with many redundant

10
Summary

• A statically indeterminate structure develops less

stress and deflects less than equivalent statically
determinate structures
• The analysis of statically indeterminate structures
involves using the member-force relations to solve for
displacements and forces in terms of each other
