Assignment No .1

Aim: Experiment: Implementing Internetworking using Cisco Packet Tracer and Configuring Server
for DHCP, Web Server, and DNS Server.

Theory:
In this experiment, the goal is to create an internetworking environment using Cisco Packet
Tracer. This is achieved by interconnecting switches and routers. Routers act as gateways
between different networks, enabling data to flow between them, while switches facilitate local
network connectivity.

The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is utilized to simplify IP address

management. It dynamically assigns IP addresses to devices on the network, ensuring efficient
communication between devices.

A web server is set up to host and serve web content to users, either over the internet or an
intranet. The Domain Name System (DNS) is used to translate human-readable domain names
into machine-readable IP addresses, making it possible for devices to communicate seamlessly
using domain names.
Procedure:
Step 1: Launch Cisco Packet Tracer
Begin by opening Cisco Packet Tracer on your computer. Create a new project if starting from
scratch or open an existing project if applicable.

Step 2: Drag and Drop Devices

On the left-hand menu, select the required devices like switches, routers, DHCP server, and
DNS server. Drag these devices onto the workspace area.

Step 3: Connect the Devices

Using the appropriate cable types (Ethernet cables for switches and routers), establish
connections between the devices to form the desired network topology. Pay attention to
connection types (e.g., FastEthernet, GigabitEthernet) and the interfaces used for the
connections.

Step 4: Assign IP Addresses to Devices

Configure IP addresses and subnet masks for the router interfaces to enable communication
between devices. Plan and implement an IP address scheme suitable for your network size
and addressing requirements.

Step 5: Configure DHCP Server

Double-click on the DHCP server to access its configuration panel. Set up the DHCP pool,
defining the range of IP addresses to be assigned to clients. Also, specify the default gateway
and DNS server addresses.

Step 6: Configure DNS Server

Double-click on the DNS server to access its configuration panel. Add DNS records for the
devices you want to access using their hostnames. You can also configure forwarders for
external DNS resolution.

Step 7: Configure Router

Access the router's Command Line Interface (CLI) by clicking on it and selecting "CLI" from
the bottom menu. Configure basic routing protocols (if needed) and set up any necessary
static routes.

Step 8: Implement VLANs (Optional)

If desired, create VLANs on the switches to logically segment the network. Assign specific
ports to each VLAN and configure VLAN interfaces on the router.

Step 9: Test Connectivity

Verify that all devices can successfully ping each other and access the DNS and DHCP
servers. Troubleshoot any connectivity issues that arise during testing.

Step 10: Save and Evaluate

Save your project to preserve the network configuration. Evaluate your network's
functionality, making any necessary adjustments to improve performance or security as
needed.
Conclusion:
In conclusion, this experiment aims to create an internetworking environment using
Cisco Packet Tracer by interconnecting switches and routers. Routers act as gateways
between different networks, while switches facilitate local network connectivity.

The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) is utilized to simplify IP address

management by dynamically assigning IP addresses to devices on the network, ensuring
efficient communication.

Additionally, a web server is set up to host and serve web content to users over the
internet or intranet. The Domain Name System (DNS) is used to translate human-
readable domain names into machine-readable IP addresses, enabling seamless
communication between devices using domain names.

The step-by-step procedure involves launching Cisco Packet Tracer, selecting and
connecting the necessary devices, configuring IP addresses and subnet masks, setting up
the DHCP server, configuring the DNS server, and implementing optional VLANs. The
connectivity of devices is tested, and the network functionality is evaluated, with
potential adjustments made for better performance or security.

Overall, this experiment provides hands-on experience in creating a functional network

infrastructure that enables efficient communication between devices within and
between networks, thus demonstrating the importance of internetworking concepts and
protocols.
