of 20 corns were collected and measured and found to have a mean length of 8.8 inches. It has been known that
the standard deviation of all corn shipments is 1.9 inches. Find a 95% confidence interval for the mean length of
corn in the large shipment.

standard deviation was 2.5 liters. Construct a 98% confidence interval for the mean amount purchased by all
customers.
5. A poll of 100 randomly selected car owners revealed that the mean length of time that they plan to keep their
cars is 7.01 years and the standard deviation is 3.75 years. Construct a 95% confidence interval for the mean
length of time all car owners want to keep their cars, include the interpretation.
6. In a reading achievement test, a random sample of 150 third graders from Valencia district had a mean score of
83.4 with a standard deviation of 14.8. Construct a 95% confidence interval for the mean score which all the
third graders in this school district would get if they took the test.
7. The contents of 7 similar containers of sulfuric acid are 9.8, 10.2, 10.4, 9.8, 10.0, 10.2, and 9.6 liters. Find a 95%
confidence interval for the mean content of all such containers, assuming an approximate normal distribution for
container contents.
8. Seven containers of a commercial solvent randomly selected from a large production lot weigh 23.5, 23.3, 24.0,
23.0, 24.8, 25.5 and 24.7 lb.
a. Find the point estimates for the mean and variance of the weights of all the containers.
b. Construct a 90% confidence interval for the mean weight of all the containers of the solvent from which the
sample came.
9. The mean and standard deviation for the quality grade-point averages of 36 college seniors are calculated to be
2.6 and 0.3, respectively. Find the 95% and 99% confidence intervals for the mean of the entire senior class.

Confidence Interval of the Population Mean Difference

A standardizes chemistry test was given to 50 girls and 75 boys. The girls made an average grade of 76 with a
standard deviation of 66, while the boys made an average grade of 82 with a standard deviation of 8. Find a 96%
confidence interval for the difference μ1−μ2 , where μ1 is the mean score of all boys and μ2 is the mean score of
all girls who might take this test.
10. A course in mathematics is taught to 12 students by the conventional classroom procedure. A second group of 10
students was given the same course by means of programed materials. At the end of the semester the same
examination was given to each group. The 12 students meeting in the classroom made an average grade of 85
with a standard deviation of 4, while the 10 students using programed materials made an average of 81 with a
standard deviation of 5. Find a 90% confidence interval for the difference between the population means,
assuming the populations are approximately normally distributed with equal variances.
11. Records for the past 15 years have shown the average rainfall in a certain region of the country for the month of
May to be 4.93 centimeters, with a standard deviation of 1.14 centimeters. A second region of the country has
had an average rainfall in May of 2.64 centimeters with a standard deviation of 0.66 centimeter during the past
10 years. Find a 95% confidence interval for the difference of the true average rainfalls in these two regions,
assuming that the observations come from normal populations with different variances.

hours. A sample of 200 brand BB batteries showed a mean life time of 1,200 hours and a standard deviation of
81 hours. Find the 99% confidence limits for the difference of the mean lifetimes of the population of Brand AA
and BB.
