Module 6 PPT Presentation Scientific Notation

Scientific notation allows for easy manipulation of very large and small numbers by writing them as a decimal multiplied by a power of 10. A number written in scientific notation takes the form of N × 10^m, where N is a decimal between 1 and 10 and m is an integer exponent. Converting between scientific and standard notation involves moving the decimal point left or right based on whether the exponent is negative or positive. Scientific notation is useful for illustrating very large or small quantities and performing calculations on them.

Scientific Notation

Prepared by:
Ms. Eliza G. Aguinaldo
The learner will be able to…

• Define Scientific Notation;

• Identify the importance of Scientific Notation; and
• Transform Scientific Notation to Standard Notation and
vice versa.
Scientific Notation allows us to perform operations on very big or
very small numbers by writing the number in a different way. The
Scientific Notation of a number N is an expression of the form,
N x 10m, N is a decimal number greater than or equal to 1 but
less than 10 and m is any real number
Example:
1. 2.4 𝑥 104
2. 1.4 𝑥 10−3
3. 5.4 𝑥 10−2
Look at the exponent of ten to identify the number of places and the direction
the decimal point will be moved.

If the exponent is negative, move the decimal point to the left as many
places as the exponent.
1.23 x 10−2 = 0.0123
1.23
The decimal point is going to the left 2 times since its exponent is 2
Examples:
1. 3.5 𝑥 10−2 = 0.035
2. 7.89 𝑥 10−4 = 0.000789
3. 2.572 𝑥 10−5 = 0.00002572
If the exponent is zero, do not move the decimal point
Examples:
1. 2.9 𝑥 100 = 2.9
2. 4.797 𝑥 100 = 4.797
3. 4.23 𝑥 100 = 4.23

If the exponent is positive, move the decimal point to the right as many
places as the exponent.
1.23 x 102 = 123
1.23
The decimal point is going to the right 2 times since its exponent is 2
Examples:
2.361 𝑥 103 = 2361 8.91855 𝑥 104 = 89185.5
1. Place the decimal point after the first non zero digit

2. Count the number of places, the decimal point, has been

moved, and use that number as the exponent of 10
If the original number is greater than 10, the exponent of ten is
positive.
Example:
1. 192 = 1.92 𝑥 102
2. 3849 = 3.849 𝑥 103
3. 28 = 2.8 𝑥 101
1. Place the decimal point after the first non zero digit

2. Count the number of places, the decimal point, has been

moved, and use that number as the exponent of 10.If the
original number is between 1 and 10, then the exponent of ten
is zero.
Example:
1. 1.8 = 1.8 𝑥 100
2. 7.9 = 7.9 𝑥 100
3. 4.9 = 4.9 𝑥 100
1. Place the decimal point after the first non zero digit

2. Count the number of places, the decimal point, has been

moved, and use that number as the exponent of 10. If the
original number is between 0 and 1, then the exponent of ten
is negative.
Example:
1. 0.82 = 8.2 𝑥 10−1
2. 0.042 = 4.2 𝑥 10−2
3. 0.00023 = 2.3 𝑥 10−4
• It is used to illustrate bigger numbers
• Scientific notation to Standard
If the exponent is negative, move the decimal point to the left
If the exponent is positive, move the decimal point to the right
• Standard Notation to Scientific Notation
If the decimal point is at the right of the of the number that is
greater than 1 but less than 10, then the exponent is positive
If the decimal point is at the left of the of the number that is
greater than 1 but less than 10, then the exponent is negative
