Statement of Purpose

Fetzcy Joy O. Momo

I am interested to apply in Taiwan as an English Teacher. My friend and colleague

awaken my interest after sharing news of this rare opportunity. My desire for professional
development through gaining new knowledge, learning new strategies and sharing my talents
and skills to others specially to foreign learners, is one of my goals in life to achieve.

I finished Bachelor of Elementary Education with English as my concentration, at

Bukidnon State University (previously, Bukidnon State College) on March 2006.After
passing the Licensure Examination for teachers, held on August 27, 2006, I applied at the
Departmet of Education-Division of Bukidnon. Fortunately, I was ranked as number 3 among
42 applicants and was hired immediately as Substitute Teacher for two months on June-July
2007 at Kiburiao Elementary School, in the barangay where I am living. On August 2007, I
was hired as a permanent teacher at Lipa Elementary School for two years and ten months
(2007-2010). It was a school in a mountain and was few kilometers away from home. I was
transferred then, in a school nearer to my home which was Minsamongan Elementary School,
last school year 2010-2011 up to school year 2014-2015. In the school year 2014-2015, I was
again transferred to Kiburiao Elementary School through swapping aggreement between me
and my godfather who was a teacher at Kiburiao Elementary School who wanted to serve as
Officer In-Charge, which happened to be my position that time at Minsamongan Elementary
School. I stayed at Kiburiao Elementary School, a home-based station for seven years and
nine months. It was from school year 2014-2015 up to school year 2020-2021. During my
stay in the said school, I was honed with such talents and skills which at first, I thought I do
not have and I thought I can not do. For seven years and nine months, I have improved my
hosting skills, organizing events, I have learned basic lay-outing on programs and other
related tasks. I have spearheaded one of the biggest donation-drive in the school. I haved
gathered unexpected sponsors who have made every student surprised and a happy one. I
have also gained enough knowledge and learned different techniques on how to deal with
learners with diverse personality.

Teaching by the books does not guarantee an effective teaching performance nor an
assurance that students find the lesson important at all. It is through capturing learners’
attention, understanding learners’ individuality. Modifying teaching strategies and applying
different activities based on learners’ interest which make learning fun, productive and
significant to them.
Learning on how to read in English Language is not just the main goal of an English
Teacher like me, but making the learners comprehend the language. It is my goal to help
learners understand what they read in a simplest way possible. As a Reading Coordinator in
our school, it is my task to endorse and initiate a Reading Intervention Plan. Integrating
differentiated reading activities to diverse learners need a thorough monitoring. It is not
enough to simply hand in the activity without evaluating the activity’s appropriateneness to
the learners. My experience as an English Teacher, as a Reading Coordinator and a private
English Tutor, haved developed my skills in teaching and communicating. I have learned to
apply different teaching approaches such as interactive classroom activities, individual and
group performance task. More than that, giving more attention to learners’ background, and
considering their learning styles are also taken into account by a teacher like me. Sometimes
considering on feeding the learners will also help! It was proven personally, when in the
school year 2020-2021, in my present school, Puntian Elementary School that I spearhead our
Reading intervention Classes (RI-CLASS). It was a reading intervention which we had a
special class hour for those learners who were not so good in reading and those who were not
a reader with a feeding integration. At first, we only thought to give snacks in return of their
efforts in coming to school alternately, with their parent’s permit. After a week of monitoring,
surprisingly the number of struggling readers were lessened. As we continue doing reading
with feeding, more pupils were encouraged to participate, especially those who were
struggling and the shy ones. As the community observed how it was effective, more feeding
sponsors appeared which made the intervention a successful one.

I consider myself lacking in terms of teaching strategies, that is why I took up Master
of Arts in Teaching, Major in Social Studies. I just had my Academic Requirements related
to the said Masters Degree. I know it is not aligned with my concentration and with my great
dream which is to graduate with Masters Degree in Elnglish Language Teaching, but still, it
was a big help for me. It taught me to connect with my colleagues and I also learned how to
deal with them. Moreover, it trained me how to create a plan for my professional growth
however, carrying out the plan is the most challenging one. With this, I learned to strategize
and manage to gain the trust of my colleagues. The knowledge and wisdom that I attained
from acquiring with my colleagues and learners gave me confidence that I fit for the position
I was dreaming of. Because of my Masteral Units, I was promoted to Teacher III, then to a
Master Teacher now.

Teaching in public made me happy. However, I want to go beyong my limit. Though,

it is quite risky considering that I am already secured in my current job, I still want to venture
teaching in other country. It is my dream to teach in a foreign country wherein I would learn,
and understand its culture. I also believe that I will grow more professionally if I will be
exposed to different educational system. Moreover, I want to pursue higher education, enroll
in any teaching-related courses, learn more strategic teaching and learning approaches and at
the same time, share my skills to my future colleagues and students.

If this application will be granted, I want to become part of the institution for atleast
five years. If ever I will find out later that this career path is very convenient for my interest, I
will consider staying for a longer period of time, maybe with my family. I want to be a great
help to the institution and contribute something for its betterment. Furthermore, I want to
understant the culture through being part in the community. Exploring different tourist spots
of Taiwan is also one of the things I wish to accomplish.

Teaching can be considered sometimes as a trial-and-error process. Thus, there is no

best learning and teaching strategies and approaches. It all varies on the different background
and learning styles of the learners. Likewise, there is no such word as “the best teacher” for it
differs to the liking of the students. It may be true to one or two learners but might not be the
choice of the others. As a teacher, it is my ambition to acquire more knowledge, be updated to
trends, learn new teaching strategies and apply it in my teaching so that I can consider myself
an effective teacher to my learners. In order to provide quality education, a teacher must not
stop learning. High quality performance could only be achieved if the students are genuinely
guided and understand its purpose.

As a teacher, I teach not only in the content but most of the time, I tried to integrate
the lesson to learners’ daily life. To let the learners learn and understand easily, I share
popular individual’s experiences or even my life’s experience applicable to the lesson being
discussed. As I have observed, learners find English subject boring, but with such idea,
bringing the learners to reality and making them get involved into the scene will make them
interested in the lessons. Also, the learners learn to develop their higher order thinking skills
and share their views stand on the lesson being discussed.

Teaching gives me satisfaction. It is very fullfilling to hear from my learners in the

future that I made an impact into their lives. At this ,stage of my career, I have seen different
kinds of learners. From my sixteen years and seven months experience in the Department of
Education, I still want to go beyond and explore.

I want to spend my life learning, teaching, coaching, helping and inspiring other
people , especially to my learners.
