Balancing and Vibrations

This document contains a 10 question assignment on balancing and vibration analysis for a Mechatronics engineering course. The questions cover topics such as static and dynamic balancing, finding mass distributions to balance a rotating shaft, defining periodic motion, natural frequency, resonance, logarithmic decrement, equilibrium methods to find vibration frequency, deriving equations for displacement in forced and overdamped vibration systems, and explaining gyroscopic effects in airplanes and naval ships during pitching motions.

SAL COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING

BE SEMESTER – IV
MECHATRONICS DEPARTMENT

Subject Code: 3142006

Subject Name: analysis of mechanisms
ASSIGNMENT – 4 – balancing and vibration

1 Explain clearly the terms static balancing and dynamic balancing. State the necessary
conditions to achieve them.
2 A, B, C and D are four masses carried by a rotating shaft at radii 0.1 m, 0.15 m, 0.15 m and
0.2 m respectively. The planes in which the masses rotate are spaced at 500 mm apart and
the magnitude of the masses B, C and D are 9 kg, 5 kg and 4 kg respectively. Find the
required mass A; and the relative angular settings of the four masses so that the shaft shall
be in complete balance.
3 Define the following terms: (i) Periodic motion (ii) Natural Frequency (iii) Resonance.

4 Define logarithmic decrement and derive an expression for it

5 Explain Equilibrium method to find the frequency of vibratory system.

6 A gun barrel of mass 600 Kg has a recoil spring of stiffness 294 KN/m. If the barrel recoils
1.3 meter on firing, determine, (i) the initial recoil velocity of the barrel & (ii) the critical
damping coefficient of the dashpot which is engaged at the end of the recoil stroke.
7 Derive the equation for the displacement in forced vibration system

8 Derive the equation for the displacement of over damped system

9 Explain the effect of gyroscopic effect in aero plane

10 Explain effect of gyroscopic effect in naval ship during pitching
