5 READING
1 Look at the text and circle the correct option. Is this a(n) ...
a a social media page? b an e-book? c a newspaper article?
What’s the first thing that most teenagers do when they wake up in the morning?
Check their phones of course – messages, social media pages, likes and comments.
Then they probably surf the internet while eating their breakfast, upload some photos,
or download new music.
Many young people follow celebrities and influencers on social media pages, and every
student uses the internet to find information for school homework and projects. If we
want to contact a friend from another city or country, we can send him or her an email
or we can chat online. Sometimes our online life is more important than our real one!
We are connected to our friends and to the rest of the world through our phones and
tablets, but what happens to all the information which we create through our online
activities? Companies collect the information and use it for commercial purposes. The
millions and millions of pieces of personal information which they collect are known as
‘big data’. They analyse the information to find out about our likes and dislikes, what
we’re buying online, where we want to travel and what we want to do. Then they target
us and other users with advertising and offers.
But there is some value in the collection and use of all this data. Scientists
communicate across countries and continents to share their findings and such
research helps people all over the world to have longer, healthier lives. Farmers can
receive online instructions about crops and looking after their animals. And volunteers
and activists use the internet to create campaigns and projects.
Just one word of warning though – always check the websites you use. Some
information on the internet is fake and so you must be careful that your sources are
reliable.

1 My Little World
READING
Dear Diary,
I’m very nervous about tomorrow – my first day at high school. All my friends go to the same
school too, so that’s a good thing. But there are also many new things, so I’m a little scared.
First of all, compared to my middle school, my new school is very big! I think I’ll get lost on the
first day and maybe, just maybe, find my way back home after a week – LOL. Anyway … the
school has a great performing arts programme, so there is a theatre there, as well as a huge
gym, two sports fields and an indoor court which can be used for basketball and volleyball. Yay!!!
There are also after-school clubs and workshops like the science clubs, the school choir,
band, cheerleading, book clubs etc, etc.. There are actual classes too of course (Ughh!)
Last year, I had problems with Maths and French, so I hope that Grade 9 goes better for me.
Then there are all the new classes, like Technology and Business. I’m scared because I want to
make my parents proud.
Wish me luck!!!
Gaby

Meet Mary
Mary is a doctor. She works at the local hospital from Monday to Thursday. She works some Fridays, but not every week.
She doesn’t work at the weekends. Her father, Anthony, is a firefighter. He works for three days and then rests for three
days. He spends most of his time in the fire station and goes out to put out fires. Mary’s sister, Rebecca, is a veterinarian.
She takes care of animals, mainly dogs and cats. Their uncle, Richard, is a pilot, so he travels a lot and visits many
countries. They all have busy schedules, but they have lunch together once a month. Mary and Rebecca also have got a
sister called Hannah who is in high school. She works as a babysitter once or twice a week.
