Cumulative Knowledge On How to Play Chess

Descriptive Essay by Israel A. Edra

Chess is a timeless game of strategy and intelligence. Chess is more than just
entertainment; it's a mental combat zone where players' minds collide in a symphony of
well-considered moves. Every component, a metaphor for medieval battle, has a
distinct meaning of its own and adds to the complex balancing act of strategy and
intuition that characterizes the game. The typical way of playing chess is characterized
by knowing the different functions and structures of the pieces, analyzing the board
and having an advance strategy.

Chess is a board game that is played between two players. It has two different
parts: the board itself and its pieces. The board is mainly composed of 8 by 8 square
tiles. The color of each tile is black and white, or sometimes it can be brown and black.
The color may vary depending on what material the board is made of. The tiles of the
board are labeled a to h, where the players are facing, while 1 to 8 are labeled to the side
of the board. The board is divided into two sides: the white pieces and the black pieces.
Each of its sides contains sixteen pieces. It has eight officials: one king, one queen, two
rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns each. These pieces portray different
roles in the game. They vary in design and in how they move. First, the queen. The
queen is the most powerful piece of the game, as it can move anywhere on the board,
either vertically, horizontally, and diagonally. The queen is placed beside the king at the
beginning of the game. It must not be placed in the tile as the same color of piece. In
most battles, the queen is commonly used for checkmates. It is also considered the
second-most important piece on the board. Secondly, the rook. The rook can also move
anywhere on the board, but only horizontally and vertically. The rook is placed on the
corner parts of the board at the beginning of the game. The rook looks like a castle;
that’s why it is placed on the side of the board. Rooks are also important, as rooks helps
in doing checkmates. The bishop: it can only move diagonally. There are two types of
bishop: the white bishop and the black bishop. The bishops are commonly used to
support the queen when doing checkmates. The bishop is also called the “sniper”
because it is sometimes placed in the blind spot of the board. Another piece is the
knight. The knight can only move three tiles following an L pattern. The knight looks
like a horse; that’s why it is the only one that has an special way of moving. There is
also the pawn, which is considered the primary piece. It can only move one tile
forward. The pawns can move onto two tiles if and only if it is their first move. The
pawns can be promoted to any official if it has already reached the other side of the
board. And last but not least, the king. The king can only move one tile at a time in any
direction, but not in the tile where it can be checked. The king is the most important
piece of the game. The game rotates around the king. The essence of the game is to
protect the king at all costs. The goal of the game is to checkmate the opponent’s king.
As well as to protect your own king too.

To sum it up, chess is a game where the key to winning is having an advanced
strategy and mind control. Chess requires different strategies to win. The different
pieces must have a relation or connection to each other to form a strategic play. Since
chess has variant pieces to play, playing it involves the presence of minds and advance
planning of moves. To put it simply, the essence of chess lies not merely in capturing
pieces but in foreseeing the consequences of each move.
