1. An Introduction to UV WinLab
UV WinLab is a 32-bit software package designed for the needs of demanding
laboratories both today and tomorrow.
UV WinLab version 6.2.0 runs on Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows Vista
SP1, Windows 7 and Windows 8 32-bit and 64-bit operating systems.
UV WinLab version 6.3.0 runs on Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 32-bit and
64-bit operating systems.
UV WinLab version 6.4.0 and 6.4.1 runs on Windows 7, Windows 10 32-bit and 64-bit
operating systems.
Features include:
Instrument control for Lambda 25, 35, 45, 20, 40, 20Bio, 40Bio & 40P, 365 medium
performance UV/Vis instruments
Instrument control for Lambda 650, 750, 850, 950, 1050, 800 & 900 high
performance UV/Vis and UV/Vis./NIR instruments
A method development environment that mimics the QA/QC workflow
fully user-definable sample table
The ability to program data treatment for simplification of routine methods.
A configurable results table
Conditional reporting based on results calculations, providing rapid and easy
PASS/FAIL screening tests.
Simple, customized reporting using Communiqué; a WYSIWYG reporting package
developed by PerkinElmer.
Integrated relational database providing powerful trending tools; all important
information, including methods, data, report templates and reports is stored securely
in the database.
Integrated instrument performance verification (IPV) Tests for Lambda 25/35/45:
Cover pharmacopoeia, ASTM, GLP and ISO requirements. An automatic test interval
can be set.
The ability to import spectra from previous, 16-bit releases of UV WinLab.
2. Important Information
2.1. Software changes for version 6.4.1.
UV WinLab v6.4.1 added some new functions:
For Lambda 1050, added 2 detector system supporting.
For Lambda 365, added 5+1 multi cell changer supporting.
For Lambda 25, 35, 45, added new methods and templates supporting.
Added serial port communication service tool.
Enhanced the algorithm of decoding ThermoFisher spa file.
2.8. Modification of the IPV Stray Light KCl 200nm test (JDBE6S4ER4).
The test has been modified to accommodate the change in the European
Pharmacopoeia (Test 2.2.25 now performed at 198 nm). The test now contains a
variable rather than the fixed wavelength at 200 nm. After upgrading to UV WinLab
v6.0, to avoid an error message (“Failed to load samples”) you must open any
existing IPV setup containing the IPV-Stray Light KCl 200nm test and resave it.
However, due to the way these operating systems use the Data Execution Prevention
(DEP) feature, the installation options for UV WinLab were changed as follows:
If no other PerkinElmer Windows 7-compatible application was installed then all
installing options are available (Full installation, UV WinLab only, UV WinLab
Data Processor and Viewer (DPV) only).
If such an application was detected, UV WinLab DPV must be installed first
(options: Full installation, UV WinLab DPV only).
If UV WinLab DPV was already installed all options are available.
If you are installing UV WinLab on a Windows 8 or 8.1 PC, you may need to install
.NET Framework 3.5 software first. There are two installation procedures, depending on
whether or not your PC is connected to the Internet. Refer to the Windows_8_ReadMe
file on your installation disk for more details.
If you are installing UV WinLab on a Windows 10 PC, you may need to install .NET
Framework 3.5 software first. There are two installation procedures, depending on
whether or not your PC is connected to the Internet. Refer to the Windows_10_ReadMe
file on your installation disk for more details.
7. Compatibility issues with previous versions of UV WinLab v6.0
Methods created by UV WinLab are backward compatible, i.e. methods created by older
versions will work on newer versions of the software.
However, the reverse is not always true. This is due to implementation of new features
that add to the existing set of method settings. Older versions of the software cannot
recognize the new settings and therefore fail to load and execute the methods.
In particular, UV WinLab 6.0.4 or later methods are not compatible with methods created
with previous versions of UV WinLab 6. A method exported from UV WinLab 6.0.4 or
later will not import in UV WinLab 6.0.3 or earlier versions.
In order to allow such methods to be used on systems with UV WinLab 6.0.3 or earlier
versions the user should export these methods in compatibility mode.
That means that when exporting a method to a file the user should check the “Preserve
compatibility with earlier UV WinLab 6 versions” check box present at the bottom of the
Save As… dialog box. This will only export the settings recognized by the earlier versions
and therefore the exported method will be recognized as a valid method.
For version 6.0.4 or later of UV WinLab this means that the value of the “Suppress
sample prompts” (new feature in this version) will not be exported to the method. All
other settings will be exported and work correctly on a previous UV WinLab 6.0 system.
This section provides a list of the methods that have been changed and shows how to
manually upgrade existing databases in order to use the latest version of those methods.
The following table lists the method files that have been modified. These files are used to
import the methods when installing an instrument. By default they are installed in
subfolders of the following folders:
Subfolder Methods
IPV Methods\ IPV-Noise.wlm
Lambda25-35-45\Methods
You could use the same approach in order to replace Noise methods in the service
methods. However, they can be deleted, one by one, which will place them in the Recycle
Bin folder. The Recycle Bin can subsequently be emptied.
However, a method exported from UV WinLab 6.4.0 could not be imported into UV
WinLab 6.3 or earlier versions.
