2. Important Information
2.1. Software changes for version 6.4.1.
UV WinLab v6.4.1 added some new functions:
For Lambda 1050, added 2 detector system supporting.
For Lambda 365, added 5+1 multi cell changer supporting.
For Lambda 25, 35, 45, added new methods and templates supporting.
Added serial port communication service tool.
Enhanced the algorithm of decoding ThermoFisher spa file.

2.2. Software changes for version 6.4.0.

UV WinLab v6.4.0 is required if your spectrometer is the Lambda 365. You can either
use UV WinLab v6.4.0 to control the Lambda 365 with a single cell holder, or use it to
control the Lambda 365 with accessories including Lambda 365 Auto Sipper, Lambda
365 6-Position Peltier Control Cell Changer, Lambda 365 50mm Transmission
Reflectance Sphere, Lambda 365 Water Jacketed 8-Position Multi Cell Holder, Lambda
365 8-Position Multi Cell Holder, and PerkinElmer S10 Auto sampler.

2.3. Hardware changes for version 6.3.0.

UV WinLab v6.3.0 is required if your spectrometer was manufactured since
approximately January 2015 with a version 2.x firmware board. You can determine if
this is the case by checking the connector panel on the right side of the spectrometer.
If the panel features both USB and Ethernet sockets, then the spectrometer contains a
v2.x board and you must use UV WinLab v6.3.0.
2.4. Database Backup and Archiving
UV WinLab uses a database implementation for storing ALL data in the system. It is
strongly recommended that the following files are backed-up regularly.
 C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\PerkinElmer\UVWinLab
\UVWinLab.mdb (Windows XP) or C:\ProgramData\PerkinElmer\UVWinLab
\UVWinLab.mdb (Windows 7 or later) – This file contains the database of
methods, tasks and samples.
 C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\PerkinElmer\UVWinLab
\Communique.mdb (Windows XP) or C:\ProgramData\PerkinElmer\UVWinLab\
Communique.mdb (Windows 7 or later) – This file contains the database of
reports and report templates.
 C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\PerkinElmer\
SecuritySystem\Users.mdb (Windows XP) or C:\ProgramData\PerkinElmer\
SecuritySystem\Users.mdb (Windows 7 or later) – This file contains the database
of users.
Note that the users.mdb file is automatically backed-up to the Backup folder
within the SecuritySystem folder.
For non-English Windows, the above paths may be translated into local languages on
some releases of Windows.
UV WinLab and Communiquédatabases can be configured to run from a network
drive facilitating regular backup. The software however is NOT configured for use by
more than one login.
When archiving the UV WinLab database using Database Tools, a new database is
created which contains the current methods but NOT the tasks.
It is recommended that the UV WinLab database is archived using database tools and
a new database created containing only the current methods after ca. 5000 samples
(100–200 Mbytes).
It is recommended to create a new Communiquédatabase containing only the current
templates when the Communique.mdb file is between 100–500 Mbytes in size. To do
this you will need to first export all of the templates using the CommuniquéArchive
Utilities in Database Tools. Select all of the templates from the templates tab and
then select File and Export. Exit the archive utilities and now create a new
Communiquédatabase. Set this database as the active database. Re-enter the archive
utilities and select File and Import. Select all of the templates previously exported.
When the import is complete the templates should be visible from the templates tab.
Note that it is possible to archive all of the reports from a Communiquédatabase
using the archive utilities however it is recommended to create a new database as
above and backup the old database so that it can be set as the active database if the
reports need to be viewed at a later date.
2.4.1 Partial archive problems for legacy databases
When using the Partial Archive feature of Database Tools utility for archiving
databases produced with a previous version of UV WinLab (up to and including
version 6.0.2) you may experience error messages and the operation may fail. A
typical error message may be: "An error occurred transferring calibrations.
Standards for method: OQ Quant". That would indicate that there is a problem in
transferring the method to the new database. This error is most likely to occur for
Quant methods containing saved calibrations.
This problem was fixed in UV WinLab 6.0.3. However, it is not possible to archive
databases from previous versions without removing the method indicated in the error
message.
In order to be able to archive such a database:
 Make a note of the method name(s) from the error message.
 Open UV WinLab Explorer and delete the method(s).
 If there are tasks that were created from the deleted methods, they can be used
to recreate the original method with correct settings. Navigate to such a task,
open it in View mode and from the File menu choose Save Settings | As New
Method.

2.5. Upgrading to UV WinLab 6

The UV WinLab installation will alert you that a previous release of UV WinLab has
been installed and recommend that you uninstall the previous release and the
accessories before installing the later release.
IMPORTANT: UV WinLab accessories MUST be un-installed BEFORE un-
installing UV WinLab. If UV WinLab is un-installed first it will NOT be possible
to un-install the UV WinLab accessories.
The database files documented above are NOT removed by uninstalling. The
database schema will be automatically updated the first time it is used with the new
release. Databases will not be overwritten and hence if databases are detected new
databases will not be created.
Note: The software will default to the Local Repository UV WinLab database. If you
had a different database registered prior to the upgrade, you will need to re-register
that database via database tools.
In addition, you will need to go the instruments page in the UV WinLab Explorer and
reset the default instrument as this is lost during the upgrade (FMQI5XSLJC).

2.6. Upgrading CommuniquéReport Templates

During upgrade installations from earlier versions of UV WinLab to UV WinLab
v6.x, existing report templates in the Communiquédatabase will be upgraded to a
new database schema and new templates are also created within Communiqué. The
new report templates are installed in C:\Program Files\ PerkinElmer \UVWinLab\6.1\
CommuniquéTemplates and if so desired can be imported into a new blank database.

2.7. Using CommuniquéCustom Objects

When developing Communiquétemplates there are a number of data objects for
outputting tables from a task – for example, Task List -> Samples Table. These
objects, however, suffer from the problem that they only output within the area that
the object occupies on the template page. This means that if the information in a table
needs to span across pages then these objects cannot be used. UV WinLab ships with
a number of custom objects that replace the data objects that suffer from the above
problem. When upgrading, these custom objects need to be imported into the
Communiquépackage first and then they can be used instead of the corresponding
data objects. Note that all UV WinLab v6 default report templates now use these
custom objects where appropriate rather than the corresponding data objects.
To import these custom objects:
a) Start the UV WinLab Explorer and open a template (any one) from the Report
Templates node. The CommuniquéReport Creator should appear.
b) From the File menu select Import and then Custom objects… An Import
Component dialog should appear.
c) Navigate to the C:\Program Files\PerkinElmer\UVWinLab\6.1\ Communique
Objects directory. Note that the “c:\Program Files” directory will depend on the
locale – for example, for a German OS it is c:\Programme.
d) Select all of the files in this directory that have the .exp extension and click on
Open. These custom objects should appear on the Custom Objects tab under the
Custom Data Object node.
The following custom objects are available:
 Sample Table – Replaces the Task List->Samples Table data object.
 Result Table – Replaces the Task List->Results Table data object.
 Data Table – Replaces the Task List->Data Table data object.
 Standards Table – Replaces the Task List->Quant Calibration->Standards
Table data object.
 Custom Table – Replaces the Task List->Custom Table data object.
 Peak Table – Replaces the Task List->Task Samples->Peak Table data object.
 Instrument Settings – Displays a table of all the instrument setup parameters.
 Footer – Displays the footer used on the templates shipped with UV WinLab.
 Task Title – Displays the name of the current task.
These custom objects can now be used in the same way as the corresponding data
objects except that because they are made up of smaller data objects and layout tools
then the format of these can be changed if desired.

2.8. Modification of the IPV Stray Light KCl 200nm test (JDBE6S4ER4).
The test has been modified to accommodate the change in the European
Pharmacopoeia (Test 2.2.25 now performed at 198 nm). The test now contains a
variable rather than the fixed wavelength at 200 nm. After upgrading to UV WinLab
v6.0, to avoid an error message (“Failed to load samples”) you must open any
existing IPV setup containing the IPV-Stray Light KCl 200nm test and resave it.

3. New Capabilities in UV WinLab v6.0

3.1. Refreshed Graphical User Interface (GUI)
The Explorer and Workspace look and feel has been refreshed with modern toolbar
icons. Where appropriate, dialogs have been revised to avoid clarify functionality and
make them more intuitive. The high-performance instrument settings dialog is an
example. The parameter field labels are now reference in word rather than icons. The
ordinate mode is now part of the method Settings rather than Detector Settings.
The workspace menus have been revised to provide a more intuitive structure.
Customer terminology has been used, i.e. Settings saved to methods, results saved to
tasks.
3.2. UV WinLab Data Processor and Viewer (DPV)
A new companion software product has been added to UV WinLab to enable spectra
to be processed, manipulated and printed outside of the UV WinLab workflow. For
further details, see the UV WinLab DPV Release Notes.
3.3. Support for Lambda 1050 Instruments
Lambda 1050 Wide Band and Narrow Band InGaAs UV/Vis./NIR spectrometers and
InGaAs spheres are supported by UV WinLab 6.0.
3.4. Simplified Explorer Folder Structure
Previously folders and methods were created as part of the main installation. Now
folders and methods are created during the instrument installation. Example methods
to install may also be chosen as part of the wizard. Consequently, only folders and
methods corresponding to the instrument of choice are installed. This results in a
simplified and less cluttered folder structure.

3.5. Base Methods, Windows Desktop and Start Menu Shortcuts

Appropriate base methods are now added to Explorer shortcut bar and optionally to
the Windows Desktop and Start menu when you install an instrument. These base
methods act a starting point for subsequent methods, they can be edited but you must
save them under a new name. Note that if you have upgraded from a previous version
of UV WinLab that in order to install the base methods, you should uninstall your
instrument and re-install it (MKWI79YKWP).
3.6. Improved Data Safety for Power Failure
Data are written to the database immediately after each sample has been collected.
Previously data were only written when the task was saved. Consequently, data could
have been lost if there was a power failure while a method was being run
(DPLD62NEYB).
3.7. Import and Export of Sample Table
It is now possible to import sample tables created in CSV files (for example, using
MS Excel), given that the order of the columns in the imported file match that in the
UV WinLab Sample Table. Similarly, the contents of the Sample Table can be
written directly to a CSV file. This functionality facilitates improved LIMS
compatibility. As in previous releases, a range of cells can also be copied and pasted
to and from MS Excel via the clipboard.
3.8. Standards Available in Sample Table for Quant Methods
For Quant methods, standards are now available in the Sample Table. This allows the
user to randomize both sample and standard data collection as might be expected for
best practice experimental design. Note that the standard concentrations are specified
on the Standards Table and disabled in the Sample Table. This is a significant change
to the Quant functionality and has allowed significant improvements to the efficiency
of the Quant method development and analysis.
3.9. Improved Sipper Behavior
i) A ‘true’ Cancel button has been added to the Sipper sampling dialog. Previously
the Cancel button proceeded with data collection without sipping. This functionality
has been maintained on a Skip button (PSIU5TWKLP).
ii) A Prompt before flushing option has been added. When selected this option
generates a prompt after sample data collection to allow the user to flush with an
alternative solvent or redirect the sample to an alternative container
(ARGE5XFEW9).
3.10. Improved Output Behavior
i) The Output node (previously Reporting) behavior has been improved. The specified
report is no longer automatically displayed when the node is displayed. The report
can be previewed via Communiquéusing the Preview button. This change in
behavior considerably improves the performance of the Workspace and avoids
several potential crashes (PSIU5YPKND).
ii) Report Frequency – On-demand and Print Hardcopy – No are now the default
settings for new methods. This avoids unnecessary alerts when saving tasks with no
printer attached and unnecessary Communiquéreports (ARGE6NEDSV).
iii) Call application (End of Run) functionality has been added to the Output settings.
This functionality allows the user to call and pass data to other applications such as
MS Excel facilitating custom processing. PerkinElmer application software such as
Color, Architectural Galls and Filter may also be called. In this case the user should
check the Compatibility checkbox facilitating the transfer of data in long files names
into short file names. There is also potential to control third-party accessories
between sample data collection operations.
3.11. Force Task Saving in UV WinLab
An option to force task saving has been added to the Administrator options. If this
option is checked, the user is forced to save the task in an identical manner to UV
WinLab ES (DPLD6EMDQV).
3.12. Support for European Pharmacopoeia (EP) Methods
The IPV routine for Lambda 25/35/45 has been modified to comply with the latest
revision of the European Pharmacopoeia UV tests (v5.2, July 2005). New Service
methods are also available for the Lambda 650, 750, 850, 950.
The following IPV changes have been made:
i) Control of absorbance at 430nm using Potassium Dichromate (K2Cr2O7) has been
added. Since the 430nm measurement is carried out using a different K2Cr2O7
solution than the other four wavelengths (235nm, 257nm, 313nm, 350 nm), a new
IPV test (IPV-Photometric Accuracy K2Cr2O7 430 nm) has been added to the list of
IPV tests which can be performed and queried.
ii) Stray light using Potassium Chloride has been modified to use a variable and as
such can now accommodate the new 198nm value as well as supporting the previous
200nm.
iii) Resolution for quantitative analysis using toluene in hexane has been re-worded to
remove any mention of the 1.5 peak/trough ratio.
iv) Resolution power using toluene in methanol has been introduced for derivative
spectroscopy with a 0.2 peak ratio.

3.13. Data Export on Demand

It is now possible to export task data to CSV, SP files etc. on demand (for example,
after each sample) using File | Export. The data to export and the target folder initially
default to the standard Data Export settings for the method but can be altered as
required. This supplements the existing Data Export functionality which is executed
on saving the task.
3.14 Save Spectra on Demand
It is now possible to export spectra to SP files on demand (for example, after each
sample) using File | Save Spectra. This supplements the existing Data Export
functionality.

3.15 Suppressing sample prompts for custom accessories (version 6.0.4)

Some custom accessories use end of run/call application feature in order to
move/change samples and therefore they do not need the sample prompts.
In order to assist with this customer requirement a new check box was added to the
Output page of the UV WinLab workspace.
The user can now check the "Suppress sample prompts" option. The option only has
effect when using Call Application feature with the option "After each sample".
The only prompts displayed would then be the autozero prompt and the first sample
prompt (MMOR7XVHY9, SEP-1245).

3.16 Support for high end Lambda v2 main boards (6.3.0)

From 2015 the 650/750/850/050/1050 instruments have a new main board which
allow for a USB connection in addition to the 9 pin RS232 connection with a higher
baud rate of 115200. In addition, the firmware download uses the RJ45 Ethernet
connection

3.17 Support for US Pharmacopoeia 857 (USP<857>) Methods (6.4.0)

A group of service methods including USP <857> methods are available for the
Lambda 365. These methods are used for testing Wavelength, Absorbance, Stray
light, Resolution, etc.

3.18 Support for Lambda 365 (6.4.0)

From 2017 the Lambda 365 and its accessories (including Lambda 365 Auto Sipper,
Lambda 365 6-Position Peltier Control Cell Changer, Lambda 365 50mm Transmission

The “All My Samples” query was missing from version 6.0.2. It has now been re-
added.
 Error message when failing to open a task/method does not indicate the cause
of the error (MMOR7CNKF6)
When trying to open or import a method that uses accessories that are not installed
the message users got was usually "You have been denied access to UV WinLab.
Please check with your system administrator." Besides being not informative it led to
user complains about the software not working. A message indicating what accessory
was not installed is now displayed to the user.
 Cannot report Comments for Samples as they appear in Sample Event Log
(MMOR7KQG5V)
In a Communiqué-generated report it was not possible to separately report the Reason
and the Comment properties from the Sample Event log. This issue has now been
resolved.
 SAMPLE TABLE: Peltier issues (MPEY79LMDU)
When scanning samples using multiple cycles the temperature of previously scanned
cycles was overwritten by the current cycle temperature. At the end of scan all cycles
were displaying the temperature of the last cycle. This issue has now been solved and
the scan speed when using a Peltier accessory has been improved.
 PELTIER: Average Temperature columns should only be available when
using cycles (MMOR7PYJKE)
Scans like timedrive do not use cycles so the columns displaying the average
temperature for a sample were redundant and likely to confuse the user. Temperature
columns for scans that cannot use cycles or only use one cycle were therefore
removed and the issue corrected.
 Align command doesn't work after the scan was stopped at the end of one
sample(MMOR7LDKRG)
When a user used the Align command and started a scan from the align position (0
nm) the Align command would not work again. This issue has now been solved.
 Problems importing corrections from files (MPEY7B3KU8)
Users were able to import corrections from ASC files. However, ASC file format is
not appropriate for validating the current settings. Therefore, users cannot anymore
select ASC files for importing as corrections. Also, importing of TD files for
timedrive corrections was implemented.
 Pressing the Optimize button in DPV causes a crash (MPEY7B4J3K)
The UV WinLab Data processor and Viewer (DPV) stopped working when using the
Optimize command. This issue has now been fixed.
 Methods created from a predefined method cannot be saved more than once
(MMOR7CLJN6)
A user can open a predefined method in Run mode, alter the settings and save them as
another method. However, trying to save again to the same method was not possible.
The user had to close the initial method and open the saved one in Edit mode. This
issue has now been fixed.
 Concentration units missing from Standards table (MMOR7CLK8S)
Adding units to the Concentration column in Sample Table was not reflected in the
Results table and the column in results table acted as a separate column. This issue
has now been fixed.
 Database tools: the databases cannot be removed from the list
(MMOR7E9D2M)
Once a database was added to Database Tools list it could not be removed, even when
the file it referred to was no longer available. This issue has now been fixed and the
remove functionality implemented.
 When an instrument calibration is run from manual control after the
calibration was finished it is impossible to get lamp change mirror to flip to
visible lamp (IBRY7HJLJN)
This was due to calibration setting lamps to fixed mode (UV). The issue has now
been fixed.
 Unable to edit standards if sample table column not defined for standards
table (AAUT7NGJSK)
If a new column was added to the sample table but not the standards table and the
sample table contained both samples and standards, then the sample rows in new
column were not editable. The issue has now been corrected.
 Interpolate process not available for timedrive (MMOR7M2JB3)
The Interpolate process was not available for timedrive methods. This issue has now
been fixed.
 Desktop and Start Menu shortcuts to predefined methods may hold invalid
method IDs (MMOR7Q3HM4)
When adding an instrument of a type that was already installed and also creating
desktop and/or Start menu shortcuts they may be invalid. This issue has now been
resolved.
 Enhancement: ability to change the report template when viewing a task
(MMOR7QAU6H)
When viewing a task, the template list in Output page was disabled. A preview or
printing was only possible with the template defined in the task. Template list is now
available when viewing a task or method (UV WinLab Standard version only).
 Problems when using %R spectra (MMOR7QBFPZ)
When saving %R spectra as ASC files the ordinate was saved as nm instead of %R.
Also, when using %R files for reflection correction the scan values appeared to be
multiplied by 100. These problems have now been resolved.
 EQUATIONS: Processing fails when using more than one sample and
external reference spectra (MMOR7MDLPA)
This was due to a change in the way the Microsoft compiler worked in previous
versions of UV WinLab and has now been solved.
 VISTA - Password Control (NHAS7JJDG2)
In Microsoft Windows Vista, changing the password control to Windows Login
would lead to the software crashing. This issue has now been solved.
 VISTA - Database Tools - Partial Archive Fails (NHAS7JJCEA)
When running the Partial Archive in DB Tools, a message popped up saying that DB
Tools has stopped working, and that the software needs to be closed. This was due to
the user interface being unresponsive in Windows Vista and has now been solved.
 VISTA: Tutorial Contents Page Button Problem (NHAS7J4CJN)
In the UV WinLab Tutorials Contents page the button "Getting Started Tutorial" did
not work. This was due to the fact that Windows Vista does not have a default Flash
Player. This has been fixed by installing Adobe Flash Player.
 Unable to archive UV WinLab 5 databases in UV WinLab 6 when Quant
methods/tasks are present from v5 (ARGE7LQKBZ)
A problem was identified that would cause UV WinLab versions 5 and 6.0.2
databases to fail the partial archive process when they contain Quant methods with
saved calibration. This problem has now been fixed.
 When running a Measurement if the range is changed the results do not
appear in the Measurements tab (NHAS7RBGEK)
When running a method that uses measurements, if the scan range was changed
between samples, the mean value was not displayed for the samples with a different
range. This issue has been resolved.
 Grating does not change from NIR to UV/Vis when scanning with URA
(ARGE7DTLMP).
When a scan was performed with the URA the grating did not switch from the NIR
grating to UV/Vis grating at the detector change point. This issue has now been
resolved.
 URA - Slit width in live display is not updated after detector change for high-
end instruments with URA (ARGE6DBGCG)
Slit width in live display status bar was not updated after detector change for high-end
Lambda instruments with URA. This issue has now been resolved.
 Timedrive with cell changers not working on high-end instruments
(MMOR7E9CT3)
When running a timedrive method with a cell changer the data collection halted with
an error. A linear cell changer would incorrectly state that it cannot reach the next
position. This issue has now been resolved.
 Service methods fail to import (MMOR7ETC7B)
Some service methods failed to import into the database when a high-end instrument
was installed. This issue has now been resolved.
 Data Collection property page for three-detectors module does not display
correctly on Japanese systems (MMOR7FJEHS)
On Japanese systems the Data Collection property page for three-detectors module
did not display correctly. As a result, it was not possible to change the InGaAs-PbS
detector change point. This issue has now been resolved.
 Failure to read files from some installation CDs (MMOR7FLK7G)
Trying to import spectra files from an installation CDs was sometimes failing with a
dialog box displaying the message "Parameter is incorrect". This issue has now been
resolved.
 Results Table in IPV Reports not populated in Query (SEP 1073)
(ARGE7FRCH6)
Running IPV tests correctly displayed the IPV reports. However, when the some IPV
reports were displayed in the Result Browser the results tables in the reports were not
populated. This issue has now been resolved.
 When exiting alignment mode using Set Wavelength command the slits not
set to the values set in the method (SEP 1083) (MMOR7HJFYT)
On a high-end instrument after moving away from the alignment position (0 nm) the
slits were left set to 0.2 nm instead of being restored to the value set in the method.
This issue has now been resolved.
 Peristaltic sipper not working with Lambda 40P (MMOR7HNGLM)
Using a sipper with a Lambda 40/40P/40Bio instrument caused the software to hang
in the "Setting Up" state when trying to perform a scan. This issue has now been
resolved.
 User interface for Lambda 20/40/40P/40Bio wrongly allows changing the
lamp change point (MMOR7HNGPW)
Lambda 20/40/40P/40Bio instruments have fixed lamps change point (wavelength).
However, the UI allowed the user to modify it and a command was sent to the
instrument. This issue has now been resolved.
 Unable to calibrate 650S/750S instruments with integrating spheres (SEP999)
( IBRY79RPUG)
High performance instruments were reported as being unable to calibrate when
integrating spheres or URAs are installed in the detector compartment, particularly a
problem when the instrument was a Lambda 650S/R or 750S and therefore does not
ship with a standard transmission detector that could be installed for the calibration.
This issue has now been resolved.
 Processing problems when migrating existing Quant methods to UV WinLab
6 ( MMOR7JYGZ4)
A software problem prevented Quant calculations involving Quant.Concentration
equation variable from being performed correctly. This issue has now been resolved.
 Concentration column should be editable for samples ( AAUT7JZDK6)
The Concentration column in the Sample Table in version 6.0 was made non-editable
for samples. Some customers have reported that they do enter concentration values
for some samples and need to be able to continue to do so in version 6.0. As a result
the Concentration column now allows entering values for samples.
 When running a method the workspace switches to live display before each
sample ( MMOR7K7CE5)
When running a method the workspace switched to live display when data collection
started and before each correction and/or sample. This prevented users, for instance,
from watching the Results table as it populated with processing results. This issue has
now been resolved

The following bugs have been fixed in UV WinLab v6.0.2:

 Baselines collected twice on German OS Systems (MMOR7C3HUJ)

Previously when scanning over a detector change point, two baseline corrections were
collected before each sample. This did not occur on English systems. This issue has
now been resolved.
 Deleted Samples Shown in Saved Tasks (MMOR7C6HUX)
In some atypical circumstances, deleted samples could be displayed in tasks from
which they had been deleted. This has now been corrected.
 UV/Vis Instrument Control (REAS7C2NSE)
Lambda 650 and Lambda 850 methods can now be opened when attached to the
instrument. Previously an exception was encountered leading to a crash of MS.
 Export to CSV from Results Browser (REAS7C2NWZ)
Files exported from Results Browser as CSV now use tabs as separators which is
common for both English and non-English systems. Previously a comma was used
which could be misinterpreted on non-English systems.
 Baseline and NIR Gains in Program Table (REAS7C2NUN)
Baseline gains and NIR gains in the Program table are now reported when using fine
gains in scan and timedrive methods.

The following bugs have been fixed in UV WinLab v6.0.1:

 Reporting High Performance Instrument Settings in Service Methods
All high-end Lambda instruments settings are now reported. Previously some
instrument settings were not reported.

The following bugs have been fixed in UV WinLab v6.0.0:

 PC Hyperthreading Instability (PDIU6GUBSX)
Hyperthreading can now be used on PCs with UV WinLab. Previously on some PCs
hyperthreading caused system instability and had to be turned off.
 Sample / File Name Used for Export and Import Spectra (JDBE5DEKCD)
If a sample is exported as a spectrum, the Sample ID is offered as the export file
name. Similarly the filename is used for the Sample ID when a spectrum is opened
into the sample table.
 Method / File Name Used for Export (FMQI5TTLWH, HKBT6KXFU4)
If a method is exported, the Method Name is offered as the export file name.
 Scan Speed Indication
The speed displayed is the average scan speed calculated for the defined scan range.
UV/Vis and NIR speed will be different and the value displayed takes into account
the contribution of individual ranges. Scan speed over a defined range is affected by
the data interval and the detector response. In order to see the speed for UV/Vis and
NIR separately (or UV/Vis, NIR InGaAs and NIR PbS) hover the mouse over the
Scan Speed box and the values are displayed in the Scan Speed tooltip. Note that this
is the uninterrupted scan speed and does not take into account time taken for the
changing of slits, filter wheel positions, detectors or gratings. Previously the scan
speed was always indicated for UV/Vis range.
 URA Instrument Page Tooltip Information (HKBT5U4F48)
The URA detector is now correctly reported as Silicon. Previously it reported PMT.
 Live Display Ordinate Precision (HKBT5E7FDL)
The Live Display now displays to the significant figures specified in the Options.
Previously editing the options had no effect on the display.
 Recycle Bin Menu Items (MPLD5QUGUE)
The Recycle Bin menu items (Empty and Restore) are now only visible when the
Recycle Bin view is selected.
 Saving Methods to Folders (MPLD5SEGLV)
Methods can now be saved to folders. Previously all methods were saved to the
Methods root folder and needed to be moved manually.
 JCAMP DX File Type in Auto-Export (SLUE5SQJAV)
JCAMP DX is now available as a file type in Data Export. Previously this file type
was not available.
 Quant Ordinate Mode Type (MPLD5UWL6K)
The Quant ordinate mode (Max. Height, Height, Area) is now reported as part of the
calibration details.
 Save Method Corrections Checkbox (JDBE5V9EEC)
Methods are now checked for corrections and the Corrections checkbox is only
enabled if corrections are available for saving. Previously no check was made and the
Correction checkbox as always enabled.
 Timedrive Abscissa Default Units (AOSU5W4DQG)
The abscissa units are now defaulted to the units of the method, i.e., seconds, minutes
or hours. Previously the abscissa units were always in seconds, i.e. 60 minutes = 3600
seconds.
 Insert Button Enabled If No Samples In Sample Table (HKBT5WQQS2)
The Insert button is now active when there are no (zero) samples specified in the
sample table. Previously the user was required to specify a number of samples before
the Insert button would be enabled.
 Baseline Data Collection Indicators (DPLD65ZKBM)
The baseline being scanned and progress through baseline data collection is now
indicated. Previously there was no indication of progress.
 Continue Completed Tasks (PSIU67BDVZ)
Completed tasks can now be continued unless in UV WinLab ES they have been
Reviewed or Approved.
 Standard Variables in Equations (DCHR6D7CQG)
Variables defined for standards are now available for calculations in the Equation
Editor.
 Attenuators on Lambda 650 Instrument Settings (SLUE6GHD4H)

were enabled when not fitted.
 High Performance Service Method Integration Times (ARGE6NEDML)
The default integration time for high performance (Lambda 650, 750, 850, 50, 1050)
service methods is now 0.2 seconds. Previously the default was 2 seconds.
 Insufficient Standards Alert (JDBE73GBY8)
An alert is now displayed if there are insufficient standards for a calibration.
Previously there was no alert and gave the impression the task was not responding.
 Filter Wheel Support for Lambda 750 Instrument (HPAH76YDK2)
The Lambda 750 NIR filter table is now fully supported. Previously in some
circumstances the filter table could become corrupted.
4. Limitations and Known Problems
This section describes some known bugs or functionality limitations not raised in the
on-line documentation.
4.1. Installation
 Do not uninstall Autosampler accessory driver (BEBN5WQQDG)/Three
Detector Module accessory driver (MPLD73AJCV)/Universal Reflectance
accessory driver
If the accessory is uninstalled, and not replaced by another version, then the methods
based on the accessory will not be usable. It is recommended to leave the driver
installed, even if the accessory is not used for a while. Alternatively, selecting Restore
in Control Panel/Add Remove programs will allow the methods to be read again.
 Desktop Method Shortcuts (MKWI78NJSG)
If desktop methods shortcuts have been created and subsequently an alternative
database is made active, the shortcuts will present an error when used as they refer to
methods in the previous database. The shortcuts should be deleted and methods
opened from within UV WinLab Explorer.
 Upgrade Installation
For uninstall and reinstall procedure, it is suggested to uninstall previous version of
installer according to order of individual accessory, DPV, and then UVWinLab.
4.2. Method Explorer
 Drag and Drop Functionality (MPLD593GRT)
Moving folders and/or methods and tasks between folders cannot be achieved using
drag and drop. The user must use a cut and paste via the Edit menu or keyboard.
 Exporting Methods to a Full Drive (MPLD5CHJXQ)
When exporting methods and templates to a full destination drive, the error message
“Exporting method operation fail” is given. The export file may however have been
created, but with zero file length or reduced size. Freeing up space on the destination
drive and re-exporting and it will normally succeed.
 Remember to Import the Associated Report Template when Importing a
Method (JDBE5XTC29)
If a method is imported and relies on a report template, then make sure the template is
also imported. If it isn’t then the method will still try to look for the report template.
 Changes to IPV Autorun (BEBN5U9FGS)
If you want to change the frequency / date & time of the IPV autorun of an existing
IPV setup, then the changes will only take place after the next scheduled run from the
previous/original setting.
 Change Password First day Login (JDBE5F5KC2)
The User cannot change their password from the “change password” dialog on the
first day of login. This applies to the Standard version of the software.
4.3 Method and Tasks
 Running Locked Methods on an Instrument with Different Hardware
(JDBE6RLJ9P)
If you attempt to run a locked method that was previously created on an instrument
that contained a hardware setting not available on the current instrument (for
example, Lambda 20/25 has a fixed slit) then an Instrument Settings dialog will be
presented which does not have any buttons and you will be unable to close it in the
normal manner. In these circumstances the dialog should be closed using Windows
Task Manager. In Task Manager select the Applications tab. Select the Task
"Instrument Settings" and click the "End Task" button. Wait a few seconds and you
will be presented with an End Program dialog, click the "End Now" button. This
results in a PerkinElmer Module error offering to send it to Microsoft. Click the
"Don't Send" button. You will be able to continue use UV WinLab as normal. In
order to use these particular methods on incompatible instruments, you will need to
Unlock and Save the method under a different name. Under normal circumstances
running a similar method that is in Draft form (i.e. not Locked and Approved) will
correctly present the Instrument Settings dialog with 2 buttons ("Edit Settings" and
"Stop Now").
 Calibrating the Instrument when a Method is Open
If you run any calibration routine when a method is open, the calibration will not be
correctly performed and will lead to erroneous measurements being obtained in
subsequent scans. You should close any active methods before running a calibration
routine.
4.4. Data Collection
 Windows XP Screensaver Live Display Corruption (ARGE6EMEVT,
HKBT62TKJ7)
If the Windows XP screensaver is activated during prolonged data collection, an
Unknown Error is generated and subsequently the UV WinLab live display will be
corrupted. It is recommended that the screen saver is disabled if long-duration data
collection operations are to be performed.
 High-performance Instrument Initialization (HKBT628DVQ)
If a high-performance instrument method is started before the instrument has
completed its initialization, the method may freeze ‘initializing’ necessitating that
both the instrument and PC are re-started. This is particularly an issue when using the
Universal Reflectance Accessory (URA). It is recommended that the user waits for
the initialization to complete (2–3 minutes) before opening any method.
 Changing the Monochromator Change Point (JDBE5XJE2Y)
If you want to change the monochromator change point, remember also to change the
detector change point to be the same.
 External Lamps Are Not Recognized In Previously Created Methods
(PSIU5R8HHT)
If an external lamp is installed, only methods generated after the lamps installation
will recognize the lamp. If necessary, methods must be regenerated after installing an
external lamp.
 Correction Spectra Status Information (DPLD5SXHRS)
The instrument information shown in the header of the correction dataset will display
the current sample scan conditions NOT the conditions used to measure the
corresponding correction.
 Attenuator Correction Status Information
If using “Auto Attenuator” correction, the baseline spectra status shows the sample
attenuator setting and not the actual attenuator setting used in the baseline.
 Timedrive Data Collection (ARGE6RLE6H)
No data will be displayed in the graph until after 8th data point has been collected.
This is a firmware limitation and cannot easily be changed. It is recommended that if
graphical display is required that large time intervals are not specified in data
collection.
 Timedrive Extended Time
If the length of time is extended during timedrive data collection, the correction data
will display data points for the original time and not the extended time. However, the
timedrive is corrected for the extended time. Note that for timedrive corrections, only
one data point is collected and referenced, but the correction datasets will replicate
this data point for display purposes.
 Before Every Measurement Correction (HKBT5WNDDP)
The correction “before every measurement” means "before every measurement
block". Where no cells need changing (i.e. the block size is less than the number of
available samples on the relevant turret), the auto zeros will be taken first. Where the
number of samples in the sample table exceed the block size, the auto zeros are then
run before the next block. The block size is determined by the size of the turret.
4.5. Sample Table
 Colons in Sample Names (MPLD5SMDHQ)
Text entered before a Colon (:) within the sample table will not be recognized.
 Large Sample Tables (AHOE5RPCZE)
Adding a large number of samples (for example, 100+) in the sample table may slow
the software, however data collection speed is not compromised. Saving such a
method may take 30 seconds or more.
 Copying Hidden Cells (FMQI5SUFPB)
The contents of hidden cells are NOT copied when a sample row is copied. The cell
when revealed is empty. It is recommended that cells are un-hidden before copying.
 Modifying Samples to be Run During Data Collection (PSIU5XLB28)
It is not possible to edit the sample table during data collection. Data collection must
be halted to allow modification to the sample table for samples yet to be run.
4.6. Data Processing
 ConvertX Data Interval (RASG5E3CSH)
Convert X cannot be used to change the data interval alone without also changing the
abscissa units. This is the function of Interpolate.
 Space as List Separator Causes Errors in Equations (TADG5X5DGK)
If spaces are selected in Regional settings as the list separator, then this can cause
problems in the equation editor which cannot use spaces.
4.7. Graph Properties
 Title and Description (FMQI5B4HZ7)
A title and description can be added to a graph but the description is not displayed.
 Coordinate Tooltips (MPEY78JM45)
Un-checking (turning off) Show Tool Tip Co-ordinate on the Advanced tab will also
turn off the spectrum context menu. It is recommended Show Co-ordinates is always
checked.
 Offsetting Spectra in Graphs (JDBE5AUBNL)
Spectra can be offset using the keyboard and can be returned to the original position
using the reverse keyboard action. Currently however there is no function to cancel
offsets applied to spectra in a graph. UV WinLab DPV has the ability to offset and
cancel and it is recommended to use this software for graphical presentation.
4.8. Quant
 Extrapolation Behavior for Imported Samples (RASG5E9E63)
If the extrapolation limit is enabled after a calibration has been created, imported
samples outside the extrapolation limit (10%) will not be predicted; result reported as
0.0000. This behavior is NOT reproduced when data is collected for samples.
4.9. Accessory Support
 Polarizer Angle Automation (SLUE626H4L)
Unlike the URA, the double polarizer drive cannot be used to make a series of
automated measurements on a sample at different angles. The user is prompted
between each angle.
 Sample Table Probe Depth (FMQI5Q8C9W, FMQI5PPHPS)
The probe depth set in the sample table or by a custom tray is overridden by the
default setting in the Auto Sampler dialog.
 Autosampler Move Up / Move Down Behavior (JDBE6Z8KAV)
If the Probe Depth has been set to a value greater than 135mm, the Move Up / Move
Down buttons will not function correctly. Reducing the Probe depth value to 135 will
resolve the issue.
 Live Display Flushing and Sipping Behavior (PSIU5TVK8G)
When the User is performing either sipping or flushing, “sipping” will appear in the
live display.
 Temperature Sensor Requires Peltier Accessory Software (ARGE6LJE2L)
The Peltier accessory software must be installed to use a temperature sensor even if
the sensor is to be used with external cooling rather than the Peltier.
4.10. Simulator
 Instrument Simulator (PSIU5BDGS5, PSIU5VGC5V)
The instrument simulator is available for the medium performance instruments
(Lambda 25, 35, 45) only. This simulator however does not support accessories or
report a slit width during data collection. There is no simulator for high-performance
instruments (Lambda 650, 750, 850, 950, 1050).
4.11. CommuniquéReporter
 Transfer of Peak Labels and Comments to Reports (DPLD6EME2P)
Peak labels and comments added to a graph are NOT transferred to the Communiqué
report. If the user desires to add peak labels and annotations to graphs, data should be
transferred to UV WinLab DPV peaks labels and comments added as required and the
graph printed directly.
 Graphs in Reports (PSIU5PXHFD)
General properties set on the graph are not displayed in reports (for example, grid
lines, line styles and colors). General properties (i.e. not specific to sample
information) may be edited within the reporting section.
 Transfer of Conditional Formatting to Reports (BEBN5KCLNS)
Conditional formatting of results tables is NOT transferred to Communiquéreports.
Conditional formatting must be setup in the Communiquéreport itself.
 Report Template Watermarks (JDBE6R8LZ4)
The status of a report template is always displayed as Unapproved when a template is
opened using Print preview. When printed from Communiquéor from a task the
watermark is not displayed.
 Opening Multiple Templates in CommuniquéDesigner (HPAH5Z4DF7)
Opening Multiple Templates in CommuniquéDesigner, can cause the tree node
selection and main display to behave incorrectly. If many templates are open, and the
bottom template is selected from the tree, and then expanded and contracted, this can
cause the focus to move to another part of the tree and another template.
4.12. Lambda 365
 Accessory cell changer for L365 can’t be selected in Manual Control
(SPENG-807).
Because accessories of the Lambda 365 Water Jacketed 8-Position Multi Cell Holder
and Lambda 365 8-Position Multi Cell Holder are not supporting the “plug and play”
feature, the accessory status can’t be recognized by the software. In UV WinLab, the
Cell Changer accessory for Lambda 365 is unselected by default, so it can’t be
selected in Manual Control. When editing a method or running a task, a user can
select the cell changer manually.
 The last point of spectrum may be missed when you are using scan speed at
2880nm/min for a short scan range (SPENG-814)
The last points of spectrum may not be shown when using scan speed at 2880nm/min
for scanning a short range (eg. less than 150 nm). When this issue occurs, please try
to either change a slower scan speed or enlarge the scan range.
 Probe offset value for 6-position Peltier can’t be written via UV WinLab
(SPENG-707).
Normally, the Probe offset should be measured by the manufacturer at the factory and
written into Temperature Control before shipping. If a user wants to modify the probe
offset value, he/she could change it via UV Express.
 No default cell number in manual control for 6 position Peltier (SPENG-706)
No default cell number here, but the desired cell position can be selected from the
drop down list, and the correct cell position can be moved to sample beam after
saving multicell calibration.
 Alignment could not work properly in Manual Control sometimes when you
apply it at first time or after changing slit width (SPENG-782, SPENG-797)
The white spot can come back after setting a wavelength and select alignment mode
again.
 When you open L35 methods on L365, the lamp change wavelength may be
changed to 400nm (SPENG-525).
The optics are designed differently for the Lambda 365 compared to the Lambda
25/35/45, so the default lamp change for L365 is 400nm, not 326nm. When a method
with lamp change at 326nm is edited on the Lambda 365, the lamp change
wavelength will be reverted to 400nm.
 Lambda 365 Auto Sipper peristaltic pump controller can’t be connected to
the PC via RS-232 cable (or USB to RS-232 cable) in UV WinLab.
A user can connect it via the USB cable. When using the USB cable you should
download the USB driver on the IDEX website (https://www.idex-
hs.com/support/literature-downloads/software-and-drivers). Please refer to document
of 09931234B for more details.
 Lambda 365 Auto Sipper can’t work with PerkinElmer S10 Autosampler
with autosampler sipper function is enabled (SPENG-503).
A user can use the peristaltic pump configured on the PerkinElmer S10 Autosampler
instead of enable external Sipper.
 Firmware information can’t be shown correctly in spectrum history and
report if it is scanned via Lambda365 (SPENG-525).
Firmware information can’t be seen in the software for the Lambda 365, it is only
available for the manufacturer.
 An error may occur when you try to perform multicell calibration during
instrument self-check is in progress (SPENG -783).
An error may occur when a user tries to perform multicell calibration during
instrument self-check. But when the instrument is idle, multicell calibration can be
done successfully.
 Multicell calibration can’t be done successfully when Vis lamp is OFF
(SPENG -829).
The Energy is too low to make calibration for multi-cell if only using the UV lamp.
Select Vis lamp in the method and perform Autozero in advance, then multi-cell
calibration can be done successfully.
5. History of Previous UV WinLab Releases
5.1. UV WinLab V5.2.0
The following enhancements were made
 Support for Lambda 750 Type Instruments
Lambda 750 and 750S spectrometers support added
 Enhanced Peltier Support (ARGE6FSJ9A, ARGE6FSJHW)
The speed of all Peltier accessories was significantly improved. The Peltier now
remains ON at the target temperature while the method is open. Previously the Peltier
was switched off between kinetic runs preventing the Peltier being used to bring new
samples to temperature before scanning. The system now takes a single temperature
reading at the beginning of each cycle rather than a reading at each cell position.

The following bugs were fixed:

 ‘User Must Enter’ Multiple Samples with Measurements (ARGE6LSNAZ).
Methods formatted to have two measurements per sample with Sample IDs set to
'User must enter' can now be run routinely. Previously one a single sample could
be run. If the user entered more than 1 sample in the sample table, an error was
generated which upon acknowledgement caused the method to close.
 Data Export with Multiple Measurements (JDBE6M8MXZ). Spectra
produced from any processing on replicate / measurements are now available after
Data Export. Previously, only one spectral result from a series of measurements
was exported.
 Peak Table Indexing of Peaks and Bases (ARGE6MGFFZ). The expanding
peak table object will now index peaks and bases correctly. Previously the last
peak was the same as the index number of the first base.
 Exporting Spectra Between Locales (HKBT68RJ6M). File names in equations
can now be exported from UK to European systems without corruption.
Previously the full stop in the file name was converted to a comma.
 Adding Samples After The Last Sample Has Been Run (SLUE674L3H). The
number of samples can now be increased even after the last sample has been run.
Previously if the last sample had been run the Number of Samples control was
disabled.
5.2 UV WinLab V5.1.5
The following bugs were fixed:
 Program error occurs for the Silica and NIST accuracy methods when task is
complete (PSIU68JCE5). This error applied to methods containing a particular
type of advanced processing. This is now fixed.
 There is always a spike going to 100% at the detector change point. The
system makes 3 changes over the monochromator change point for every
baseline and measurement (PAES65CKCG). This error applied to a Lambda
900/950 with a URA and occurred on PCs that were using non-English settings.
This is now fixed.
 Equation results that appear in the replicates/measurements table disappear
(DPLD699DUP). This error occurred when a method contained a particular type
of advanced processing and the results in the measurements table either never
appear or disappear after switching to another tree node and back. This is now
fixed.
 Improvements to Final Test (PSIU699C9C). A new equation function has been
added called YShift. This function takes an abscissa position and an abscissa
range and then calculates a best linear fit line either side of the abscissa position
+/- the abscissa range and finally returns the ordinate difference between these
two lines at the abscissa position. This function is used in final test to determine
the ordinate shift at the detector change point for a dual detector universal
reflectance accessory (URA).
 Lambda 40P instruments do not work in UV WinLab 5 (ARGE67GC9W.
This error occurred due to a conflict in naming the instrument sub type and was
true for the 20Bio, 40Bio and well as the 40P. This is now fixed.
 Changes to the smoothing function in UV WinLab (BEBN66MKQE).
The smooth processing step now allows a range to be defined over which the
smoothing will be applied so that if required only a portion of a spectrum is
smoothed leaving the remainder of the spectrum unprocessed.
 URA final test methods hang UV WinLab 5.1.2. (HKBT64ZJFX) This error
was not a crash but caused the data collection to stop after an autozero had been
collected and before the sample scan started. This only occurred for short scans
(about 20 data points). This is now fixed.
 Spectral calculations in equations incorrect when the data has different
ranges/interval (HKBT63CDXD). If an external spectrum was “browsed” into
an equation and it had a different range or interval to the data collected in the task
then it would not interpolate the external data to fit the range of the task data. This
is now fixed.
 Lambda 950 with a URA operated with a Double Beam Depolarizer does not
give reproducible results, they seem to drift (ARGE69HFUR).
This was due a firmware limitation. This is now fixed.
 Mean data discrepancy with 2 variables in equations relating to mass
fraction (JDBE6ACNBG). This was due to the fact that one variable is created
specifically for the Quant results but the process chain also creates variables for
any numeric column. The former variable is updated after the Quant calculation is
performed but the latter variable is only updated when the next sample has run
and so is always one calculation behind. This has now been fixed by removing the
latter column as it was not required.
 Spike artifacts on spectra collected from the URA in manufacturing final test
(PSIU699CBE). Spike artifacts on spectra collected from the URA in
manufacturing final test. The occurrence of spikes is very dependent on the
particular instrument/URA/sample/method parameters combinations. This has
now been fixed
 It is not possible to create a sample table in Excel, Word etc and copy or
import this into the sample table (ARGE69DKRD). It is possible to copy and
paste when a cell in the sample table is highlighted or a number of cells in the
table are highlighted. The paste area is determined by the selected area or by the
clipboard data if only one cell is highlighted. Short cut keys Ctrl V and C have
also been implemented. If you are using text files then a tab character must
separate each entry on a line and a linefeed will need to be included at the end of
each line. It is now possible to paste into Type field provided it is a valid value.
 UV WinLab 4.1 Communiquédatabases are not updated on upgrade to UV
WinLab 5 if placed on a non-default location (ARGE6ALHYC). Communiqué
databases that were not in the standard location when an upgrade was performed
failed to open after they were registered in database tools. This has now been
fixed
 Running autosampler with Y-val processing- task cannot be saved
(PSIU6CBFZU). This error applied to methods containing a particular type of
advanced processing. This is now fixed
 Crash observed when adding multiple samples without autoname and
measurements/replicates (ARGE6ASM8X). This would only occur if
autonaming had been turned off and more than one sample was added to the
sample table with measurements/replicates turned on. This is now fixed.
 Peak table does not print correctly: printer not undefined (PSIU6CBGHY).
If a printer is undefined the excess spaces between the grids in the peak table have
now been removed.
 Incorrect calibration file used in Quant tasks for data from UV WinLab 4.1
after a software upgrade (ARGE6BWG5Q). The issue was reopening the task
in re-process mode. The correct calibrations are now displayed in the method and
tasks in both view and reprocess mode
 Y-val with cycles crash (PSIU6CBGLV). This error applied to methods
containing a particular type of advanced processing and performing a large
number of cycles per sample. This is now fixed.
 Printing reports with cycles: Blank peak table present for some cycles
(PSIU6C2GB8). This is only an issue with cycles. This was caused by the report
indexing a peak table whose data had not been run. This is now fixed.
 Incorrect Time Zone and Time on Report and Report templates
(PSIU6CBGQQ). UV WinLab explorer was incorrectly interpreting the format of
dates for Communiquétemplates and reports. This has now been fixed
 Processing failure using Swiss setting (PSIU6CZHCG). The problem arose
from the graph not interpreting numbers in the locale format. Fixing this problem
also meant that the import of ASCII files correctly interpreted the numbers.
 Spectral equations not recognized as "spectral" type (HKBT63JHQ5). This
issue only occurred when there was only one row in the sample table and the
result of an equation that produced a spectrum was used in another equation. This
has now been fixed.
 Live display frozen during sample prompt (DPLD62NEWH). Any prompt that
appears just before data collection begins (i.e. no more setup to do and hence data
collection can immediately begin) will now allow the live display to update.
 Cubic interpolation of graphs cannot be switched off (PSIU6CNKCT ,
DPLD6CAHUY). The ability to set the type of interpolation has been
implemented into the options dialog. The user now has the option to switch
between linear and cubic interpolation of data points on a graph. This is on a
method by method basis. The default is cubic. If the options dialog (in the
method/task editor) is used to change the interpolation type then any NEW
methods that are subsequently created automatically get the last chosen
interpolation type.
 Using the print report toolbar icon hangs the software in XP SP2
(ARGE68QK9R). This issue occurred if the Operating System had fade effect
tool tips turned on but could occur on any version of XP.
 Peak Table - The table is cut-off at the bottom of the report and cannot run
onto a new page (ARGE65WFRG). A new data tree item has been added to
allow a peak table to be created using a Communiquétable which can flow over
pages.
 Spectral processing not setting variable as spectra (HKBT63CGEP). This
issue was only caused with 1 row in the sample table. This has now been fixed.
 Report templates in the recycle bin in UV WinLab 4.1 are restored during
upgrade to 5.1.x without signatures (ARGE6BVH6W). After an upgrade the
reports and templates previously present in the recycle bin are deleted.
 Incorrect range for Lambda 900/950 for quant calibrations (ARGE6C3HJ4).
The range 3300-150nm for high end and 1100-190nm for mid range instrument
methods can be used in calibration set up page.
 Peak table range restricted to mid-range Lambdas (1100-190nm) if no data
collected (PSIU6CZHVG). The range is dependent on the instrument type of the
method or else the data that is in the sample table.
 Fill down issues (PSIU6CZJ7J). It is possible to fill down for sample IDs with
measurements with numeric ending of the ID. Sample tag fill down has also been
implemented.
 Delay in starting cell changer and Peltier scans (DPLD6CZKLV). For time
based data collections such a timedrive or cycle time based experiments a new
prompt has been introduced just before data collection is due to start so there is no
subsequent delay when this prompt is acknowledged.
 Partial archive: Quant concentration values missing after partial archive
performed (PSIU6D7BFS). After a partial archive the concentration values were
no longer visible in the standards table. This has now been fixed.
 Processing: Measurement equations are not calculated using Wavelength
programming (PSIU6D7BHC). It is now possible to perform equations on
measurements in wavelength program methods.
 Peak table buffer overload: Spanish OS with polarization scan data
(PSIU6D7BLA). The polarization spectrum ordinate type was not set correctly
and the peak table did not have any default options for non %T or A data. This
has now been fixed.
5.3 UV WinLab V5.1.4
The following bugs were fixed:
 Single position Peltier does not reach target temperature. Applies to mid
performance Lambda instruments only (FMQI65JBTE). A user-permission
dependent dialog now available to allow calibration.
 Calibration shifts with high performance Lambda instruments
(FMQI65JBLH). The software will now request to perform a wavelength
calibration checks.
 nstrument fail to find D2 peak on power-up if beam is blocked and
monochromators get out of synchronization (FMQI65JBVS). Applies to
Lambda 45 instruments only. If the instrument is powered on with the sample lid
up or the beam blocked, then when the software starts it will inform the user the
calibration has failed and allow a rest to be issued.
 Autosampler changes from flush to return when using a Wavelength Quant
method (JDBE632G2F). This occurred the next time the method was used if
Save Calibration was performed on its previous use. This is now fixed.
 Sipper sips twice if button on sipper is used to start fill (ARGE62TGTW).
Affects medium performance Lambda instruments and German (or similar
European locale settings) Windows OS. This is now fixed.
 Sipper software hangs is 1 second is specified for fill time (ARGE62TGXG).
Affects medium performance Lambda instruments and German (or similar
European locale settings) Windows OS. This is now fixed.
 Sipper - Time for fill/flush/return are not taken from sample info table
ARGE62TGR6). Affects medium performance Lambda instruments and German
(or similar European locale settings) Windows OS. This is now fixed.
 Cannot calibrate high performance Lambda instrument with URA accessory
in place (FMQI65JBRM). This is now fixed.
 Problems with medium performance Lambda instruments when using fast
timedrive (i.e. response zero) and base lines (JDBE63WMH4). This bug is
now fixed.
 Software crashed when the sample table format was changed from
“Sequence by Sample” to “Sequence by Measurement” (ARGE658HT6).
This is now fixed.
 Peak Table not reported to hard copy when “Print after each sample” was
selected (PSUI65RB9C). This is now fixed.
 Initialization of medium performance Lambda instruments failed when 9 cell
Peltier fitted (PSUI65KJS7). This is now fixed.
 Peak Table object in CommuniquéReport does not print correctly
(PSUI65VGFY). This is now fixed.
 Wavelength Quant does not generate all the possible equation variables
before the data is collected (DPLD62LLXV). This is now fixed.
 Baselines are not re-used when polarization angle is being used with a URA
(DPLD65VMMF). This is now fixed.
 Timedrive on high end instruments runs for a couple of seconds only on
German 2000 SP3 systems (PSIU66G4X). This is now fixed.
 German systems cause Communiquéto stop working (DPLD667G3D).
vb6de.dll on German systems cause Communiquéto stop working. This is a
German version of a Visual Basic v6 DLL. As Communiquéis built using VB6 it
tries to use this DLL and causes saving of templates/reports to fail. The installer
now checks for this DLL and prompts you to rename it to vb6de.dll
 Partial Archive does not appear to be working (FMQI66BG27).
Administrators can no longer log into Database Tools in non ES configuration.
5.4 UV WinLab V5.1.3
The following bug was fixed:
 Applies to mid performance Lambda instruments only (ARGE65QG65).
Correction for Autozero in Wavelength Program and Timedrive for mid
performance platform instruments. This problem was found in UV WinLab v5.1.2
only. This problem has been fixed.
5.5. UV WinLab V5.1.2
The following enhancements were added:
 URA support – this release (and future releases) supports the Universal
Reflectance Accessory on High Performance instruments
 The example URA methods provided can be used as a basis for all new methods.
 The URA software driver is supplied on a separate disk.

The following bugs were fixed:

 Mid Lambda's overload performance (ARGE62NBA2)
With high absorbance materials the UV detector can overload to 10A at around
440nm when running the first scans of the session. After 8-10minutes the
instrument settles down and works normally. This problem has been fixed.
 Only first 0%T baseline prompt displayed when scanning baselines at start
of task (PJLE623H74). This has been fixed
 D2 Calibration - If calibration fails then the next time it is run it reverts to
manual and downloads a wrong offset (PAES628DW4). This has been fixed.
5.6 UV WinLab V5.1.1
The following bugs were fixed
 Gain setting for NIR region in Timedrive method is now reported
(MPLD5ZBLEM)
 Status now shows NIR on Timedrive when in NIR region (PAES5ZCCH9 )
 First sample in Timedrive now has baseline correction applied
(ARGE5ZDMC4) - First sample in the table did not always apply the baseline
correction
 Results Browser – Report page numbers and other areas appended with
meaningless characters (FMQI5ZEJSE & JDBE5ZEM8Y). On a few non-
English versions of Windows, Results Browser sometimes displayed meaningless
characters appended to the page number and other areas in reports.
 Equations using ‘All’ could cause a crash (JDBE5ZELYM). Add an equation
to a method, then assign the variable name ‘All’, OK dialog, then add a numeric
column to the Sample table and the application can crash. This is now fixed.
 Timedrive (ARGE5ZJGDH). Only one sample runs if 100%T and 0%T
baselines selected with ‘Always before next measurement’ - Fixed so that
multiple/all samples run.
 Auto-attenuator setting works for all samples via instrument page
(MPLD5ZJGZW). Auto-attenuator is available for all samples in the sample
table via the setting in the Instrument page. It was possible to set it to auto per
individual sample in the previous release, even though this feature was not
supported. So this option is no longer selectable.
 Improvements to Task Summary for High Performance instruments
(MPLD5Z7KAG)
Clarified identification of measurements
Multiple wavelengths are now reported
Correction settings reported
Quant Baselines reported correctly
Software version added
Time Zone reported correctly
5.7. UV WinLab V5.1.0
The following enhancements were added
 Support for the existing High Performance Lambda 800 and 900 instrument
models as well as the new 650, 850 and 950 instrument models, supporting cell
changer, auto sampler, Peltier and sipper accessories.
 Methods to support the enhanced features and internal accessories of the High
Performance instruments – for example, Polarization scan
 Continued support for the mid-range Lambda 20, 40, 40P, 20Bio, 40Bio, 25, 35
and 45 instruments and their accessories
 Improved, new version of Communiquéreporting package – more efficient data
storage, improved responsiveness, added features, online Help
 Auto Export – allows user selectable data to be automatically exported to various
file formats
 Additional functions in the Equation processing (for example, Thickness,
Refractive index, number of fringes, Correlation coefficient, Abscissa position
from Ordinate value)
 New method wizard to speed up method creation
 Concept of ‘measurements’ allowing grouping of samples
 Corrections pages supports Absorptance and Reflectance corrections and reuse of
baselines
 Separate database tools – partial archiving (archive results/reports, keep
methods/templates)
5.8. Bugs Fixed in Communiquésince UV WinLab 5.0.0
 Printing to HTML file or email displays “Document Status” text
(SWEE5WHC5K). The text has been removed if the status is blank. It is
displayed otherwise.
 Print to file may not create unique names for image files (SWEE5WKNDR).
If the target print file name includes multiple ‘.’ (often happens if the time is
included in the filename) then this can lead to the actual saved filename being
truncated and that can lead to a non-unique filename being created. The knock on
effect is for an old file of the same name to be accidentally overwritten. The work
around is to ensure there are no ‘.’ in the file name. The bug has been fixed and it
now handles extra ‘.’s.
 Printing multiple files can cause a crash (SWEE5W5FP6).Occasionally when
printing multiple files in one go from Communiquédesigner the software can
crash. This bug has been fixed.
 Various Date/Time zone issues (DPLD5YBF8Q, DPLD5XULYQ,
DPLD5XUM9E). Especially on non-English versions of Windows the reported
time zone and time could be wrong, particularly when on Daylight Saving Time.
These issues have all been resolved.
 Date/Times reported as ####### on converted templates (DCHR5YWMS6).
Sometimes dates/times were being converted from old templates with a font
setting that was too big for the size of the control box. This resulted in ######s
being displayed instead. Now the converted control box and font size is such that
the date/time will be displayed.
 Wrong text displayed in table properties (MMOR5Y4GXQ). Minor tidy up of
the table properties dialog
 Table header settings forgotten on second and subsequent pages
(MMOR5ZCG2P). When changing table header settings on reports, sometimes
the settings would not be reflected on second and subsequent pages. This has been
changed so that once changed, the table header settings are updated on all pages.

6. Notes about installation on Microsoft Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1 and

Windows 10 operating systems
UV WinLab 6.0.4 will run on Windows 7 32-bit and 64-bit and UV WinLab 6.2.0 will
also run on Windows 8 32-bit and 64-bit operating system. Windows 6.3.0 will run on
Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 operating systems.

However, due to the way these operating systems use the Data Execution Prevention
(DEP) feature, the installation options for UV WinLab were changed as follows:
 If no other PerkinElmer Windows 7-compatible application was installed then all
installing options are available (Full installation, UV WinLab only, UV WinLab
Data Processor and Viewer (DPV) only).
 If such an application was detected, UV WinLab DPV must be installed first
(options: Full installation, UV WinLab DPV only).
 If UV WinLab DPV was already installed all options are available.
If you are installing UV WinLab on a Windows 8 or 8.1 PC, you may need to install
.NET Framework 3.5 software first. There are two installation procedures, depending on
whether or not your PC is connected to the Internet. Refer to the Windows_8_ReadMe
file on your installation disk for more details.
If you are installing UV WinLab on a Windows 10 PC, you may need to install .NET
Framework 3.5 software first. There are two installation procedures, depending on
whether or not your PC is connected to the Internet. Refer to the Windows_10_ReadMe
file on your installation disk for more details.
7. Compatibility issues with previous versions of UV WinLab v6.0
Methods created by UV WinLab are backward compatible, i.e. methods created by older
versions will work on newer versions of the software.

However, the reverse is not always true. This is due to implementation of new features
that add to the existing set of method settings. Older versions of the software cannot
recognize the new settings and therefore fail to load and execute the methods.

In particular, UV WinLab 6.0.4 or later methods are not compatible with methods created
with previous versions of UV WinLab 6. A method exported from UV WinLab 6.0.4 or
later will not import in UV WinLab 6.0.3 or earlier versions.

In order to allow such methods to be used on systems with UV WinLab 6.0.3 or earlier
versions the user should export these methods in compatibility mode.

That means that when exporting a method to a file the user should check the “Preserve
compatibility with earlier UV WinLab 6 versions” check box present at the bottom of the
Save As… dialog box. This will only export the settings recognized by the earlier versions
and therefore the exported method will be recognized as a valid method.

For version 6.0.4 or later of UV WinLab this means that the value of the “Suppress
sample prompts” (new feature in this version) will not be exported to the method. All
other settings will be exported and work correctly on a previous UV WinLab 6.0 system.

8. Upgrading of IPV and Service Methods used for Noise Tests

As a result of fixing the bug 5072 UV Test Methods - All service, IPV and example
methods which previously used RMS need to be changed to SD some IPV and Service
methods have been modified in order to correctly calculate the instrument noise
parameters. This doesn’t affect new installations. However, if the software was upgraded
from a previous version then the existing database is preserved and the old methods will
be used.

This section provides a list of the methods that have been changed and shows how to
manually upgrade existing databases in order to use the latest version of those methods.
The following table lists the method files that have been modified. These files are used to
import the methods when installing an instrument. By default they are installed in
subfolders of the following folders:

 C:\Program Files\PerkinElmer\UVWinLab\6.1\Methods (32-bit Windows)

 C:\Program Files (x86)\PerkinElmer\UVWinLab\6.1\Methods (64-bit Windows)

Upgrading the IPV-Noise Method for Mid-performance Lambda Instruments

The IPV methods, once installed, cannot be deleted. Therefore:
 In the UV WinLab Explorer create a new folder (File | New | Folder menu) and
give it an appropriate name.
 Select the IPV method (IPV-Noise) from the IPV methods folder (Methods\IPV
Methods\Medium Performance Instruments) and select Cut from the
menu/toolbar/context menu (or press Ctrl + X).
 Go to the newly created folder and press Paste (or Ctrl + V). This will move the
method to the new folder.
 Go back to the IPV folder and import the new method (File | Import menu). Refer
to the above table for the file location.

Upgrading the Service Methods for Noise Measurements for High-performance

Lambda Instruments

You could use the same approach in order to replace Noise methods in the service
methods. However, they can be deleted, one by one, which will place them in the Recycle
Bin folder. The Recycle Bin can subsequently be emptied.

You will have to delete and re-import each method individually.

9. Compatibility issues with previous versions of UV WinLab v6.4

Methods created by UV WinLab are backward compatible, i.e. methods created by older
versions (e.g. v6.3.2) will work on newer versions of the software.

However, a method exported from UV WinLab 6.4.0 could not be imported into UV
WinLab 6.3 or earlier versions.
