This self-assessment test is intended as a prerequisite assessment to determine if you have


the background knowledge. This course assumes that you have a solid understanding of
Mathematics. Read the instructions carefully at the end before starting this assignment.

1. (2 marks) For each of the following statements identify if the statement is a proposition, and if
so what is its
truth value? [CLO 1]
(a) 1 + 2 = 3
(b) Help me understand this logic stuff!
(c) 7 is an even number.
(d) x + y = 4

2. (8 marks) Prove or disprove the following: (you may use truth tables, or logical equivalences or
any other
valid form of argument).
(a) p ^ q is equivalent to ~p v ~q
(b) ~(p v ~q) is equivalent to ~p v q
(c) ~(p v ~q) is equivalent to p ^ ~q
(d) p ^ (q v r) is equivalent to (p ^ q) v (p ^ r)
(e) p v q is equivalent to ~p v~q

• Submissions should reflect the concepts and practices we cover in class.


• Assignment should be submitted individually in hardform to CR/GR on or before the said date.
Incomplete/plagiarized/late assignment will be plenty’d as follow:

Incomplete: Depends
Plagiarized or copy: 0 marks for each part (from classmate)
Late: Late submissions will be penalized by 20% per week late. (i.e., from one second late to 1 week
late: 20% penalty, from one week plus one second late to 2 weeks late: 40% penalty, etc.).

• The front page followed by every student is given at bottom of this description. The page will be
attached as a title page, the beginning of the assignment in hard.
