1 03 1 Notes Solving+Two-Step+Equations

This document provides examples and steps for solving two-step equations. It shows visually how to isolate the variable by performing inverse operations, such as subtracting a number from both sides or dividing both sides by the coefficient of the variable. Examples include solving equations with positive and negative coefficients, fractions, and combining like terms. Readers are encouraged to try a few practice problems on their own.

Solving Equations

Two-Step Equations
Solving Two-Step Equations
Here are some basic examples to give you a visual representation of the steps:

𝑥 𝑥 8
2𝑥 + 8 = 22
−8 −8 22

2𝑥 = 14 𝑥 𝑥
÷2 ÷2 3 14 3

𝑥 = 7 𝑥
7
Solving Two-Step Equations
Here is another visual representation to reinforce the idea:

3𝑥 + 5 = 28 𝑥 𝑥 𝑥 5
−5 −5 27 28 5

3𝑥 = 23 𝑥 𝑥 𝑥
÷3 ÷3 9 923 9

23 𝑥 Tip:
𝑥 = You can usually leave your
3 23
3 answer as a fraction if it is
not a whole number.
Solving Two-Step Equations
Here are some slightly different examples, but the method remains the same:

! #!
5𝑥 − 7 = 23 + 3 = 5.5 −2 =4
+7 +7 " $ +2 +2
−3 −3
𝑥 3𝑥
5𝑥 = 30 = 2.5 =6
4 7
÷5 ÷5 ×4 ×4 ×7 ×7

𝑥 =6 𝑥 = 10 3𝑥 = 42
÷3 ÷3
𝑥 = 14
Solving Two-Step Equations
Dealing with a negative coefficient of 𝑥 can be done in two ways.

Either do as before and just OR rearrange so the 𝑥 term

divide by a negative: becomes positive:

−6 = 18 − 6𝑥 −6 = 18 − 6𝑥
−18 −18 +6𝑥 +6𝑥
6𝑥 − 6 = 18
−24 = −6𝑥 +6 +6
÷ −6 ÷ −6 6𝑥 = 24
÷6 ÷6
4 =𝑥 𝑥=4
