a best time or schedule and an area for studying to achieve success in understanding the
concepts/lessons and finishing the tasks and activities given in this learning kit. Always
have with you a notebook and a pen/a highlighter; these will come handy as you take down
important notes during the lesson.

Additional reminders you need to keep in mind are listed below.

1. Read carefully and follow the instructions indicated in beginning of every tasks and

Expectations

Lesson: A Raisin in the Sun

This lesson focuses on a Drama/Play as a unique form of literature and as a means for
you to determine the relevance and truthfulness of the idea/s being presented.

Specifically, it will help you achieve the following objectives:

1. define the meaning of an unfamiliar word;

2. analyze the message of the literary texts;
3. relate the ideas present in the text in real-life context;
4. justify the ideas presented in the play which are relevant and true in the Philippine
context and in the present time; and
5. reflect on and write about one’s dreams, aspirations, and commitment to fulfillment
of such.
 Let us now begin your journey in learning about American Literature.
A pretest is provided for you to get a hint on what to expect in our
discussions and activities.

 Looking Back

Last time, you learned a lot about a play entitled Driving Miss Daisy
(1987). It was written by an American playwright Alfred Uhry and
first in his "Atlanta Trilogy" of plays.

Take a minute and recall the ideas you have learned from the play.

About the play:

❖ The story is about the relationship of an elderly Southern Jewish woman, Daisy

Werthan, and her African American driver, Hoke Coleburn, from 1948 to 1973.

❖ The play describes the friendship or relationship of two different people.

❖ It is based on the actual family history of the playwright and his own

experiences living in Atlanta as a Jew.

❖ It shows the importance of treasuring every moment in life, as well as

respecting and accepting others as they are.

❖ It also tackles integrity, dignity, and trust.

❖ It won the Pulitzer Prize in 1988 for the drama category.

❖ It was adapted into an award-winning movie in 1989.

Reflect on this poem written by Langston Hughes. How do you relate
this to the story, “A Raisin in the Sun?”

“Dreams Deferred”

What happens to a dream deferred?

Does it dry up
like a raisin in the sun?
Or fester like a sore-
And then run?

Does it stink like rotten meat?

Or crust and sugar over-
like a syrupy sweet?

Maybe it just sags

like a heavy load.

Originally titled “Harlem”, this poem is one of Hughes’ poems pertaining to the lives of
African American people in the United States of America. This short poem raises concerns about
people’s expectations and the implications that might occur if those hopes and dreams are not
realized.

About the Author:

James Mercer Langston Hughes was born in Joplin,
Missouri on February 1, 1902. He is known primarily for
his impactful and colorful portrayals of black life in
America from the 1920’s through the 1960’s. He died in
New York City on May 22, 1967 at 65 because of
complications from prostate cancer.

Summary:

The rising action of the play reveals the pregnancy of Ruth. Mama (Lena) has paid the
initial amount for a house in Clybourne Park. Then, she hands the remaining money to Walter
to put it in a savings account for Beneatha’s medical schooling. The rest of the money shall be
put in a checking account in Walter’s name. However, Walter intends to invest the money in a
liquor business which Mama does not approve of.

"A Raisin in the Sun", drama in three acts, appeared as the first drama written and
produced on March 11, 1959 by an African American who questioned the idea of contentment. It
made a couple of historic breakthroughs. It was also the first Broadway show with a predominantly
African American cast.

About the Author:

Lorraine Vivian Hansberry was born in Chicago, Illinois
on May 19, 1930. Throughout her life she has been
actively engaged in civil right. She died at 34 from
pancreatic cancer on January 12, 1965.

Remember

Harlem Renaissance (a major creative explosion in music, literature, and art in

1920s centered in Harlem, New York) was Langston Hughes’ inspiration when
he named his poem “Harlem”.

The poem addresses the limitations of the American Dream for African
Americans.

The title of the play “A Raisin in the Sun” comes from one of the lines of “Harlem
(Dreams Deferred)” as the main characters in the story have failed to realize
their dreams.

The play focuses on the challenges of African American family in the attempt of
improving their financial circumstances.

Langston Hughes and Lorraine Hansberry are both considered to have great
contribution in the American Literature centering on the rights, lives, and
experiences of African Americans.
