The reality of starting a year with this new leaming set up is always
fraught with the tug-of-war between angst and exhilaration. There's that
compelling sense that online learning will not be effective for the most of us
students. | can envision new learning experiences but it's never enough and
there's always a bunch of “what ifs" on my mind. Thus, the imminent and
omnipresent angst. The first meeting helped us to be mentally prepared
from the objectives to accomplish throughout the semester and come
away with the impression that the course is off to a good start.
Mrs. Corod orchestrated a positive first impression, as usual. She made
us introduce ourselves and state our thoughts about the online learning,
which | think is a good start. | think the biggest challenge on online learning
is the limited engagement in online synchronous classes. Even those
students who are typically talkative and engaged in face-to-face classes
(not me), do not engage as much in an online format. | still firmly believe
that this has to be reconsidered and evaluated. We should take a step
back and think about those who will be marginalized and underserved in
this new set up of learning. We need to wake ourselves up to the reality that
not all students, parents, feachers have access to devices at home. It’s
really hard to imagine and ensure that students like me are ready for
learning. Nothing will enter and stick into our minds if we are hungry,
worried, and anxious.
After the getting-to-know portion, she let us watch a video on
YouTube that will guide us on how to cope with the new learning format,
She called a few names out and all of them explained what we have seen
based from their own understanding. It was quite a challenge for me to
concentrate on the class, especially because | have the attention span of
a chicken nugget. The next thing that went on after the brief recitation is a
short activity that gave us an idea what the subject is all about.
Overall, my first day on this subject was normal and close to what |‘expected. It was kind of nerve-racking because our subject teacher is Mrs.
Corod. I've leamed that to be a successful distance learner, you have fo be
self disciplined and able to study well on your own. Since we won't be
physically going to class, we can take part in class from the comfort of our
‘own home.
