F: You have graduated from IIT-B and are working in Goa right now?
F: Okay you were preparing for Civil Service, how was your performance?
F: Oh, you cleared prelims every time but got stuck in Mains, What was your Optional?
F: Do you think it was because of that? I see Engineers taking up Anthropology - I think they
are gaming the system
F: Okay, since you are interested in foreign service, Read this title and tell who is it referring
to
(Gave some headlines regarding China from The Economist - I said no idea,
she said I can understand even though we don't have any idea - both names are Lee)
F: Let me ask about Xi, how has he been in China? Please tell me your opinion - no need to
do any analysis based on principles
F: He even got re-elected recently right? What does that portray for the future of China?
F: What about his COVID policies?
M1: Okay, you have taken Industrial Engineering Operations research courses? Do you
remember some topics?

the recent case there, what do you think about the campus culture there? Again I am not
casting aspersions on you, I just wanted to know what you think about all this.
F: Any suggestions to improve this condition
(Told both short and long term and told we mustn't extend short term fixes to long term
because the situation will again perpetuate creating stereotypes)
F: Okay, there are so many creative ideas that IITs are generating, why do you think many of
them are not seeing light?
F: How did China deal with this back in the day, they too were in a similar situation to us.
M2: you are saying they didn't have enough entrepreneurs?
F: No, he's saying there was a favourable climate for investment
F: Okay, what is your plan B now? I assume you aren't too keen to pursue Civil service after
3 attempts. I understand that you have given your best both here and there, I just want to
know if you have a plan B
F: Okay, sounds good.

3M (M1, M2, M3)

Apparently, I could see only one face even when all three were speaking.

M1: How are you? Explain your job role.

M1: How is the role important to the business of the ship? (Cross questions on the same)
M2: Mention some labour laws. (Said can't remember but there had been new developments
in laws governing working hours and hiring and firing of individuals by the company)
M1: State some worse HR policies of your company (Said I haven't got to read the HR policy
but I came across an act and said about it and also mentioned the improvements needed)
M1: Tell me about some recent HR-related news. (Thought and said about Layoffs (Naah
something else ) couldn't remember so said sorry)
M2: What is the role of HR (Gave the basic definition)
M2: That's too generic, give me an elaborated view.
M2: What according to you HR does?
M2: You are earning a decent salary, why do you want to come here for the HR program, how
is it going to help you?
M2: Why not join IAS if you want to serve the society? (Said my interest aligns with
management and I don't want to go into bureaucracy as it has its own set of hurdles. I want to
serve society by utilizing my interest in management)
M2: What is your viewpoint on the privatization of Indian Railways? (Said that shouldn't be
privatized as a whole, rails can be taken as roads and just we private vehicles running on the
road, we can have more private trains but the basic infrastructure should lie with the
government)
6
M2: What if an accident happens? Who will be liable? (Depends if it's the drivers mistake or
signalling and train management system's mistake)
M3: Have you heard of SCI? Recently there have been talks about its privatization. Why so?
(Explained how it is making losses and how rampant corruption is eating up the company
from the inside. Also mentioned the fact that wherever their ships go, they get blacklisted, so
they loose a competitive advantage wrt their private counterparts)
M3: But what is the root cause? (I said corruption)
M3: What HR policies can you bring to boost the efficiency of the workforce?
(Said performance-based appraisal but now I think I could have used a better term like
Performance Based Incentives.
Not keeping the employees in a zone where they start feeling that they have a secure job even
when they don't work (I was asked to change this point)
So said about delegating important roles so that they feel more responsible.
M3: We are done
M1: Your interview is over but I want to know what you kept saying as your filler word! (I
kept saying "means like" while speaking and had to explain that it's not intentional and that it
is just a filler)

48 months work experience

2M (P1, P2), 1F (P3)

P1: How are you? How many months you have been on the ship, how many ships did you do
as a fourth engineer, and what type of ships?
Me: Answered everything and told that overall sea experience is 28 months
P1: So, effectively your work experience is two years only, so what did you do in rest of the
time?
11
Me: Explained about my job role and that it's how merchant Navy people work (they didn't
seem satisfied and kept making faces)
P2: So what, it's your job role and you were in charge, that doesn't mean that you were
working for 4 years. Tomorrow someone will come and say that I was working up to 1 A.M,
that can't be counted as extra days na!
P3: This tells that you are not good at multi-tasking, and you can't handle multiple works at
the same time. Isliye tumhe 9 months chahiye chill karne k liye
Me: Explained how I cleared COC Class 4 exams after my first contract and took care of my
family after my second contract as second wave had hit the country. And then after the third
contract prepared for CAT.
P3: But still you could have done that along with your job! Din mein kaam karo and raat
mein padho!
Me: Told them that we get very little time to sleep.
P1: UMS ship tha ya watchkeeping
Me: UMS but the area of operations kaaran hectic schedule rhta tha.
P1: Kya hectic schedule, subah 9 bje jaao shaam 5 bje aao.
Me: It's not like that sir (Literally having an existential crisis at this point of time)
(P2: Achha tell me about this conflict resolution that you mentioned in SOP.
Me: Told how there was a protest in college and cadets demanded leave, but I acted against
them and crushed the protest.
P2: Tum to bade Dharm Raj ban rhe! Kya jaroorat thi aisa karne ki, you should mind your
own business and let them have their way?
Me: Told them that it was unethical and based on false rumors this decision would have been
a disaster. Besides I made sure that all medical facilities were ready in the college if in case
any mishap happened
P3: Still I don't get your point. Why did you do that, gaaliyan padi hogi tumhe to
Me: Yes ma'am I did have a negative reputation after that incident among cadets
P1: So you are someone who is going to backstab your peers?
Me: No sir, I also acted on their behalf when the time demanded. Mine was a second batch in
college and I organized multiple events and fests and increased the corporate relation with the
campus. And I was also awarded by alumni association for this.
P1: But you said that you were 2nd batch, so how come there are alumni?
Me: Told them the history that before 1994 B.Tech used to be there and after 1994 PGDME
course was conducted so we had alumni
P2: Have you heard about the inland river project that PM Modi recently started? Tell me
about it.
Me:( I thought they asked me about inland water navigation, so started telling them about this
and then they interrupted that I am getting this wrong, I corrected myself and told them about
the river cruise service started at Varanasi and told that though Varanasi historical
significance, I don't feel that people will take such a long trip along river cruise and hence
this idea might not be viable.)
P1: Achha you talked about inland water navigation, batao uske baare mein?
Me: Told them about it, also about state regulations and how they hamper and also about the
lack of infrastructure
P2: What is dredging and can it be helpful
Me: Defined dredging and told that given the rivers carry a lot of sediments, it might not be
much use.
12
P3: Have you heard about GST?
Me: Yes, told them the full form
P3: What products are kept out of its ambit?
Me: I couldn't recall, took some time to think and still couldn't recall, so said sorry
P3: Okay, alcohol is kept out of GST. So how do you think it's justified and what would
happen if it's kept under GST?
Me: States need some share of revenue, so they impose their tax as per their requirement
P3: Why have a separate tax structure state by state, why not unify it
Me: Took a few seconds and said that maybe because they want to earn revenue but also
disincentivize consumption of liquor. So based on the amount of consumption they vary in
taxes
P3: Arre if taxes are changed then the consumer behavior will change, but consumption will
still be there na! Aaj Alia scotch piti hai, kal daam badhega to Tharra piyegi
Me: I stood on my point that it was to control consumption patterns and there are diverse
segments in society and some people will turn down on alcohol if prices are increased.
P3: Tum daaru pite ho?
Me: Ma'am no
P3: Phir nhi samjhoge.
P2: any questions for us
Me: Asked that I'm shifting from Marine to MBA what should I learn before joining college?
P2: Kuch nhi, 9 mahine chill kiye the, thoda aur karo, jo sikhna hota hai ham college mein
sikhate hain

1: So you came here because you couldn't get IFS? (more detailed grilling)
1: How would you explain to campus recruiters about this shift?

MDI GURGAON INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT

Female Non-Engineer

P1: Where are you logging in from?

I said Delhi
P1: So how is Delhi today?
Told that the weather has started to warm up here and is a lot more bearable than last month.
P1: So what is happening in Delhi today?
Was clueless. Said I can't recall anything specific to today.
40
P1: Okay. So, what is management?
Told that Management is the act of controlling and coordinating different resources to achieve
a pre-defined goal or objective.
P1: Alright. Have you heard about administration?
Told that administration refers to overseeing the day-to-day activities of a business
P1: What comes to your mind when I say the word Women Empowerment?
Said Women Empowerment is about giving women equal rights as men.
P1: (interrupted) You said equal rights. Do you know about the constitution of India?
Said yes sir, I have a fair idea.
P1: Do you know about Fundamental Rights?
I said yes sir
P1: Is there a right dealing with equality?
I said yes Sir.
P1: Then why are you saying that Women's Empowerment is about giving equal rights and
equality?
Said it is about giving equal rights and opportunities
P1: (Interrupted again) So you're changing the narrative now. First, you mentioned it was
about rights now it is also about opportunities.
Answered that it is about both. When it comes to rights, many women are not able to exercise
the rights that are given to them by the Constitution. Moreover, Women Empowerment is not
a term restricted to India and it is a term used globally. There are many countries in the world
currently that do not give women equal rights as men such as the right to vote or to
participate politically etc.
P1: Alright. What do you mean by Sustainability?
This means achieving economic prosperity without compromising the needs of future
generations and protecting the environment.
P1: So, what does a sustainable business mean?
Answered that it is a business that conducts its operations and earns profits but also does not
cause any detrimental effect on the environment.
P1: There is another term called ESG recently in the news. What is it?
I have heard about the term but I'm not very sure what it means.
P1: No issues. I appreciate it. We don't expect you to know everything. We're just here to
have a conversation.

P2: Are you working somewhere currently?

Yes ma'am (told the name of the company)
P2: What does your company do?
Told
P2: What are your job responsibilities?
Told.
P2: How big is your office?
Told.
P2: Have you ever heard about Michael Porter?
Yes Ma'am. He devised Porter's Five Forces model.
P2: What is that?

41
Said I'm not able to recall the details but it is used to study the industry environment to help
us understand how to frame a strategy for an organisation. We understand the buying power
of consumers, what competitors are doing etc
P2: Okay. So, you might have heard that in this year's budget, cigarettes are being taxed at
16%.
Yes Ma'am
P2: Then why is ITC's stock price doing well?
Answered that there are 2 reasons for the same. First, ITC is not just restricted to the tobacco
and cigarette segment, it has a diversified business in various segments such as FMCG.
Secondly, tobacco and cigarettes are addictive products and are habitual for the people
consuming them. The people who are already hooked onto them will not give it up, even
when the prices are raised.
P2: Alright, what is your CAT Percentile? what other calls do you have?
Told.
P2: Thank you, you may log off.
