Construction

This document discusses structural equilibrium and determinacy. It provides examples of applying the three equations of equilibrium - sum of forces in x and y directions equal zero, and sum of moments equal zero - to determine unknown reactions on beams. Example problems include beams with 1) a single point load, 2) two point loads, 3) a point load and distributed load, and 4) an inclined point load. Before analyzing structures for forces, their determinacy must be established by comparing the number of unknown forces to available equilibrium equations. Statically determinate structures have as many equations as unknowns. [/SUMMARY]

STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS
Equilibrium (‫)اﻻﺗﺰان‬
• Equilibrium = Balance Force, Balance Moment.

The forces acting at the joints and

supports can be determined by Equilibrium
applying the three equations of
equilibrium

∑ Fx = 0 Balance Balance
Force Moment
∑ Fy = 0
∑ M o =0
Once the forces at the joints are obtained, the size of the members, connections, and
supports can then be determined on the basis of design code specifications.

STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS 2
Equilibrium
Determinacy of Structure(‫)اﻟﺗﺣدﯾد اﻻﺳﺗﺎﺗﯾﻛﻲ‬
Before starting the force analysis of a structure, it is necessary to
establish the determinacy and stability of the structure.
When all the forces in a structure can be determined strictly from
these equations, the structure is referred to as statically
determinate (‫)ﻣﺣدد اﻧﺷﺎﺋﯾﺎ‬. Structures having more unknown forces
than available equilibrium equations are called statically
indeterminate (‫ )ﻏﯾر ﻣﺣدد اﻧﺷﺎﺋﯾﺎ‬.

STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS 6
Equilibrium
Solution: Example No. 1
ΣFx = 0, Ax = 0

ΣFy = 0, Ay + By - 20 = 0 20 kN
Ay + By = 20 (1) Ax

ΣMA = 0, - 20(2) +By(4) = 0 Ay 2m 2m By

then By= 40/4
By = 10 kN

Substitute at Eq (1)
Ay + By = 20 (1)
Ay + 10 = 20 (1)
Then Ay = 20-10
Ay = 10 kN

STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS 8
Equilibrium
Solution: Example No. 2
ΣFx = 0, Ax -50=0
Ax = 50 kN

ΣFy = 0, Ay + By = 120 (1) 120 kN

50 kN
ΣMA = 0, - 120(2) +By(8) = 0
then By= 240/8 Ax
By = 30 kN Ay 6m By

Substitute at Eq (1)
Ay + By = 120 (1)
Ay + 30 = 120 (1)
Then Ay = 120-30
Ay = 90 kN

STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS 14
Equilibrium
Solution: Example No. 5
ΣFx = 0, Ax -60cos60=0
Ax = 30 kN

ΣFy = 0, Ay + By-60 sin60 = 0

Ay + By= 51.96 (1)

ΣMA = 0, By(14) – 60sin60(10)

+60cos60(1)-50 = 0

By = 38.54 kN
Substitute at Eq (1)
Ay + 38.54= 51.96
Ay = 13.42 kN
