Solar S05

The document describes an experiment to determine the total efficiency of a photovoltaic system. It explains that the experiment will measure the efficiencies of individual components like the solar modules, charge controller, and battery, as well as the overall efficiency of converting solar energy to electricity delivered to a load. The experiment instructions outline setting up the system, taking measurements of current and voltage from the solar modules and load at different load levels, and recording the data to calculate component and total efficiencies.

PV Module Efficiency

• The conversion efficiency is the ratio of the optimal

electric power, Popt, delivered by the PV module to
the solar irradiance G, received by area A.

𝜂%= × 100 - G = GSTC =1000 W/m2

Total Efficiency of the PV System

• For determining the overall efficiency of the PV
system, we must consider the efficiencies of the
system components such as the solar charger,
battery and inverter.

Example of a stand-alone AC and DC PV system with storage batteries.

Experiment S05:
Total Efficiency of the Photovoltaic System
• In this experiment you determine the efficiency of a
photovoltaic system by using the fixed solar
modules.

Experiment S05:
Total Efficiency of the Photovoltaic System
• Learning objectives:
• to determine the efficiency chain of the photovoltaic
system: Sun  fixed solar modules  converter 
battery  electronic load.
• to determine the single efficiencies and the total
efficiency of the photovoltaic system.
• to evaluate energy efficiency: of the 1000 W/m²
energy input from the Sun, the amount x arrives at
the electronic load.

Experiment S05:
Total Efficiency of the Photovoltaic System
• In this experiment, the efficiency chain of utilized
PV system will be as follows:

Experiment S05:
Total Efficiency of the Photovoltaic System
• Hence we can express total (overall) efficiency of
the photovoltaic system in terms of all single
efficiencies of the components as follows:

PV system efficiency

𝑃 (𝑊)
𝜂 =𝜂 ×𝜂 ×𝜂 =
𝐺 𝑊 × 𝐴 (𝑚 )

Where:

𝑃 𝑃 𝑃
𝜂 = 𝜂 = 𝜂 =
