Art is not only something that is beautiful or enchanting that is
solely subject for interpretation or analysis. Art is not limited for
the consumption of the intellect, it also comes with different
functions that provides different benefits to our day to day
living. In this module, we will delve into the different functions of
art. This way, we will be able to widen our perspectives
regarding its existence and relationship to us as artists and
consumers of arts.
Personal Function
This pertains to when the artist creates art because of his
need to express. Human beings, by nature, are gregarious,
and if there is o n e a ct ivit y we ca n n o t st o p d o in g is it ’s
communicating. Personal function boils down to how we use
it in a personal level.

• To express feelings depending on emotions, thoughts,

feelings, etc.
• C o n c e p t u a l i z e : A r t w o r k i s v i e w e d , in t e rpre t e d , a n d
understood in a different way.
A good example of this would be the art of
Kintsugi. Kintsugi is the Japanese art of repairing
or binding broken pieces of ceramic pottery
with gold, which adds beauty and texture to the
pottery, but in the personal level would also be
a symbolic reminder for an individual that “It is
evidence that we’re all fallible, that we heal
and grow, that we survive blows to the ego or to
our reputations or health, and can live to tell the
tale.”
Physical Function

disturbances in nature because we want to convey a plea for
the public to participate in an environmental brigade, or we use
caricatures for satires and propagandas to break social injustices
