Tutorial 2 (For Week 3 Tutorials)

1. The document discusses several examples of drawing free body diagrams to determine forces on objects in static equilibrium. It provides the forces or weights involved in each example situation and the expected answers. 2. The examples include blocks on an inclined plane, boxes held by ropes and forces, crates hanging from ceilings or pulleys, and a cylinder resting on a bracket. 3. Drawing the free body diagrams allows determining the various contact and tension forces that balance the weights and applied forces to keep the objects stationary.

Tutorial 2 : Free Body Diagram and Force

1. A horizontal pulling force P acts on block A

as shown. Block B, which rests on block A, is
tied to a rigid wall by a cable. The force P is
not sufficient to cause block A to move. If all
surfaces are rough, construct a free-body
diagram of each block. Assume both blocks to
have a weight.
5. Three forces are applied to a box as shown.
If the box remains stationary, what is the
friction force between the box and the floor?
(117N)

2. Construct a free-body diagram of the box

which is held at angle by a rope. Assume that
the surface of the truck platform is smooth.

6. A 50kg crate is suspended by a cord and

frictionless pulley. How much pulling force is
required to apply to the free end of the cord
to hold the crate in a stationary position?
(W/2)
3. A set of crate of weight W hangs from the
ceiling by ropes in four configurations as
shown. Draw the free body diagram of hook
A and hook B and determine the forces in
each of the ropes. (W; 0.577W; 0.897W,
0.732W; W, 2W)

7. Determine the forces in each leg of the

forks of the scooter system if a force W is
applied to the mid span of the scooter. (W/4)
4. A 250-kg cylinder rests on a bracket as
shown. Find the forces acting on the cylinder
by the sides of the bracket. (893N, 1999N)
