2. System Overview
The Emergency Landing Device (ELD) system is a power supply system to rescue passengers who are
locked in the elevator by moving it to the nearest floor when the electricity is cut off to the building due a
blackout.

2.1 Operation
The ELD system provides the charging and discharging operations.

Charging Operation

(1) The system checks the battery voltage when the power is supplied to the building. If it is below a
certain voltage level, the battery is charged.

(2) When the battery voltage reaches a certain battery level, the charging operation is stopped.

Discharging Operation

(1) When a blackout occurs, the system uses the battery power to supply single-phase AC 380V/60Hz
power to move the elevator to the nearest floor.

(2) When the elevator reaches the floor, the door is opened and closed. And then the rescue operation
terminates.

(3) When the rescue operation terminates, the battery is separated from the ELD system and the power
supply is cut off to the control board to prevent the battery from consuming the power further until the
electricity in the building is recovered.

(4) When the electricity is recovered in the building, the power is supplied to the ELD system and control
panel and the battery starts the charging operation.

4.1 Charging Part

The charging part charges the battery when the commercial power is supplied to the building. There are
two ways of charging.

• Continuous Current (CC)

• Continuous Voltage (CV)

4.1.1 Charging Process

(1) Use the CC (Continuous Current) charging method to raise the battery voltage to the charging limit
voltage.

(2) When the battery voltage reaches a certain voltage level, the charging method is switched to CV
(Continuous Voltage) charging type that the charging current is gradually reduced.

(3) Reach the maximum voltage of the battery.

This type prevents overcharging and overdischarging and consequently avoids possible battery deterio-
ration and damage. The battery charging operation, as mentioned above, checks the battery voltage while
the power is supplied to the building and start charging automatically when the voltage goes below a
certain level. On reaching a certain voltage level, the charging operation stops. Thus the battery is kept
fully charged.

4.2 Inverter Part

The inverter starts operation when the commercial electricity is cut off in the building.

System Structure
11
WBVF ELD Manual

4.2.1 Operation Process

(1) The battery DC power is applied to the inverter input.

(2) A single-phase AC power is outputted from the inverter output port through the inverter's switching
control.

(3) A single-phase AC power is outputted from the inverter output port through the inverter's switching
control.

(4) Thus, the inverter supplies the power so that the elevator can move to the nearest floor.

(5) When the inverter operates, MCU checks the battery power. It outputs the UV (Under Voltage) Fault
signal to stop the inverter, if the battery power goes below the defined battery discharge limit voltage.

4.3 Input / Output Part

4.3.1 Power Input/Output Part

This part is composed of two magnetic connectors (MC1 and MC2) and a terminal block. When the
commercial power is supplied in the building, the MC1 connector is shorted and the power is supplied to
the control board. The MC2 connected is open. At a blackout, the MC2 connectoconnectorr is shorted and
battery power is applied to the inverter. And the MC1 connector is opened.

Notice
The R, S ant T phases on the building side are connected to ER, ES and ET of the terminal block
respectively and 2, 4 and 6 terminals of MC1 are connected to the R, S and T phases of the control
board respectively.

4.3.2 Signal Input/Output Part

The signal composed of mutually insulated relay contact points are exchanged between EDL and control
board. The signal is as follows.

• EOR1(ELDI) : When the ELD operation starts, a signal is outputted on the elevator control board to
notify that the ELD operation starts(EOR and EOR1 are shorted)

• EOF(ELDO) : When the elevator control board completes the rescue operation, the operation
complete signal is outputted as an open signal.(to prevent battery from discharging) → Close when
operating, Open when ending

• EOF1(P24) : 24V

• EOR(N24) : GND

4.3.3 HHT Input/Out Part

HHT is used to turn on or off the system operations manually and control the ELD operations (charging
and discharging). Set up the system's limit voltage and current to protect the system from overvoltage and
overcurrent. In addition, the ELD operation status (battery voltage, charging current and discharging

12 System Structure

current) can be monitored. The battery charging can be controlled even while the battery is being charged
as well as while the ELD is operating and if a fault occurs, the error code can be identified.

4.3.4 How to Download Program

Use a mass-production TDProg Piccolo programmer to download ELD system programs easily. If no
power is supplied to the main board, use a +5V adapter to download programs. If power is supplied to the
board, an adapter is unnecessary. Plug the download tool's jack to the CN9 of the main board and start
the download as below Table.

Notice
If you download ELD system programs using TD prog at th work site, HHT must be disconnected
from main borad.
