Question 1

Which type of data is each of the following variables? Distinguish whether it is


categorical or numerical, if it is numerical, please state whether it is continuous or
discrete. Besides, classify the level of measurement if appropriate, that is, ratio, nominal,
ordinal or interval.

1. Number of annual office visits by security management office in a shopping mall.


2. Daily caffeine consumption by a year two postgraduate student.
3. Type of vehicle driven by staff in Ching Chi College.
4. Age of a randomly chosen staff in Department of English.
5. Nationality of a randomly chosen staff in University Library.
6. Number of books return of a randomly chosen students in University Library.
7. Number of spectators at a randomly chosen inter-universities football match.
8. Water consumption (liters) during summer in Shaw Building.
9. Gender of a randomly chosen staff in New Asia College.
10. A customer’s ranking of five canteens in our University.
11. Noise level 400 meters from the North Lantau Highway at a randomly chosen
moment.
12. Number of occupants in a randomly chosen bus on North Lantau Highway.

Question 2

The data in below table are a sample of examination marks taken from 24 students who were
on academic probation and who agreed to attend an extra tutorial lesson for 1 month. The
marks were recorded before and after attending that extra tutorial lesson.

plot, and comment about the shapes.

Experiment B :

Experiment C :

0, 0, 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 5

a) Calculate the mean, median, and mode, of each of the above records.

b) From the above three measures, discuss which is the weakest indicator of each of the

above records.

Question 4
A nutritionist claimed that the number of calories in a standard lunch in our canteen
is normally distributed with a mean of 435 and a standard deviation of 50. Edmond’s
lunch had 610 calories. Was this an outlier? Explain.

The manager of our canteen claimed that the demand for meat is 15000 with a
standard deviation of 3750. The mean monthly demand for vegetable is 6800 with a
standard deviation of 1700. Which demand pattern has more relative variation?
Explain.

Question 6

The table below shows average daily sales of new promotion of drink during last
season in 74 canteens in Shatin districts. You can solve this problem by excel or
other suitable programming if you like.
(a) Would you say the distribution is skewed by constructing a histogram?
(b) By considering Z score, determine if there are any outliers?
